@@nsasupporter7557 As explained in the video, AYAOTD had 5 seasons originally from 1992-1996, which got them to the 65 episodes necessary for syndication. But when they started selling the for syndication rights a couple years later, they decided to make a couple more seasons worth of episodes to make the syndication package more appealing. That's why the 2 later seasons from 1999-2000 exist. And now we of course have the ongoing revival that is 3 seasons and counting (and Nick seems like they want to make it an annual event, so expect more).
This really takes me back, I remember watching the show with my sister when we were kids, a lot of times we would make fun of it because there were a few episodes that were really cheesy but that's exactly why we loved it

Minty and Jonny Baak for research, and Stam Fine for humour. All three Aussies, and all three great at doing these retro reviews. Check the others out if you want more fun.
I always thought Minty was a goofball when I first saw his vids years ago but his quirky personality grew on me. Now he's inspired me in creating my own youtube video series.
As a kid from Montreal who was addicted and traumatized by this show, the day I realized it was filmed in my hometown sent a cold chill down my spine. Fantastic video!
There was once a fan theory that the kids around the campfire were actually dead, and that Gary was sort of like a guide leading them into the afterlife, with the campfire itself being a purgatory, thus explaining why they had different kids in the midnight society every once in a while.
Isn't that *every* fan theory, though? That, or the MC is in a coma and the series is all in their imagination, lol. I've heard so many variations of the "they were all dead/in purgatory/in a coma the whole time" theory that I've lost count. It just skips around from fandom to fandom, the only thing changing being the details, and I always get a little kick out of seeing it pop up again.
@@Spectra651 well, death is not involved in every fan theory, it's just more prominent than others. I still like the one about Kevin's dad from Home Alone being a mafia boss, because you never hear on screen what he does for a living, and yet he can afford the big house and trips to Paris for his large family. Not to mention his being slightly apprehensive when Harry asked him all of those questions disguised as a cop.
@@cubbiedog2814 I thought the mom was the one making the big money? I figured their dad was a stay-at-home and it probably explained why the kids were so chaotic.
Watch the newest ones when you get a chance. They do the legacy justice and keep the spirit alive of what the show was about. I hope they do a 4th one in the future.
I chuckle when I remember I watched this and Wishbone at the same age. Drastically different shows. Same with Hey Dude, Salute your shorts, Guts and Wild and Crazy Kids. Damn I miss being a kid. Edit: I put that list of shows BEFORE the point in the video where you mentioned other Nick shows.
So glad you covered AYAOTD, Minty. It's one of my all time favorite shows since it premiered when I was a kid. I've been a life long fan, and have passed it down to my daughter who loves it just as much as I always did.
Man I love this show still today! This was a staple in my house growing up! And now still at 34 I go back and love watching episodes lol...there’s a UA-cam channel with every episode for free called “Are You Afraid of the Dark?” Of course lol but it’s great! But u forgot to mention the great comedian Bobcat Gothwaite appeared in an episode! And the new show on Netflix called the “Midnight Club” by Mike Flanagan who is a fantastic horror genius, got his inspiration from this show. And it is an updated more surreal version..so definitely recommend it, it was great! 👍 loved the video Minty
Looked at me best friend a couple weeks ago after watching the new series and said “How did we never do this as kids?” I grew up with woods in my back yard, perfect clearing for something like this. We totally could’ve pulled it off lol. Honestly think my mom would’ve been ok with it too lol.
As a kid from the 90s, I used to that a lot (taking a a walk into the woods at night, that is), but alone, not with friends, cause barely even had any friends
This was one of my favorite shows on the original SNICK lineup. Most terrifying episodes for my money are "The Tale of the Ghastly Grinner" (i.e. the one with the blue-and-yellow jester dude. Side note, I was less afraid of the clown in "Laughing In The Dark" than I was/am of that damned creepy-ass jester) and one that I forget the title of, but it's about a girl who moves into a new house? and her friend goes missing, and it turns out she's trapped inside a dollhouse next door and is slowly turning into a porcelain doll. (That one might actually be my favorite episode though) There's also one that I was less scared by, but that has always stuck with me, called "The Tale Of The Hungry Hounds". "I have to feed the hoooouuuunds!" (also I had a huge crush on Gary when I was like 13 lol)
That 2019 revival got me excited to rewatch the originals again, Stopped watching TV in 2000. I no idea about “Curse of the Shadows” and “Ghost Island” !!! Thanks for the heads up !
As someone who doesn't get easily scared today, I remember some of these scared me so bad when I first watched them back then that my parents started considering not letting me watch it. As such, today whenever I rewatch them, I try to figure out how they ever scared me, lol. My two all time favorite episodes are The Tale of the Lonely Ghost and The Tale of the Doll Maker. On another note, there actually was an animated series of Tales From The Crypt that was aimed at kids at one point. I don't remember what channel it was on, but it did exist.
I remember the Tales From The Crypt cartoon. I don't remember any episodes but I vaguely rememeber the intro. I had completely forgotten about it until reading your comment. GOnna have to go back and watch an episode or two.
What a great video! I used to be so scared of Are You Afraid of the Dark when I was a kid. Now I look back on it with so much fondness and nostalgia. It was so interesting to find out all these facts about one of my childhood shows. Thanks Minty!
this show had some legit scary episodes. Some of which had very dark endings. I think that shaped my love of horror as a child. That and my folks let me watch the original IT when I was 4 😂 (Edit: the whole SNICK Saturday night lineup on Nickelodeon was absolute 🔥 Roundhouse, Ren & Stimpy, All That, Pete & Pete, ect. We were spoiled lol )
"Are You Afraid of the Dark?" was one of my favourite shows growing up. I remember watching it on YTV later at night, especially on Saturdays. I would do most of my homework that morning, and got excited for nighttime when I would put on my pj's and watch the show on my Commodore 64 monitor that my dad had set up as a TV in my room. Those were good times. Looking back, I was probably too young to be watching it, but even as a very young kid, I LOVED spooky stuff. AYAotD was one of my first stepping stones (after "Goosebumps" of course) into the world of horror... and it only cemented my love for it going into adulthood. I still watch episodes in my 30's, and enjoy that truly nostalgic feeling. Stay spooky.
definitely need new episodes of are You afraid of the dark again. This is totally awesome and I enjoyed every single minute of it too. Yeah you can say I'm a big fan of are You afraid of the dark. since the first episode I saw back then.
I always wanted to join the midnight society... great memories loved this show & hey dude, Pete&Pete, salute your shorts, legends of the hidden temple... awesome shows
Still enjoy this show today, I rewatch it every few months or so. Aron Tager (Dr. Vink, RIP) had one of the best evil laughs ever and was genuinely creepy. As for guest stars, there was also Jewel Staite in a few episodes, she went on to work on the Firefly series and of the Midnight Society members Sam and Megan have had decent careers as well in movies and series later on.
I love that he showed the poster for the film The Peanut Butter Solution. I believe I saw that film, and actually even got to borrow it, from either a teacher in my grade school or a teacher or counselor or whatever they are called, from my daycare when I was a kid. In later years I looked up the film, because I remembered a song that you hear when a girl's following this truck, that it was rather catchy. I had no clue it was performed by Celine Dion, and I had forgotten how catchy it really was. I remember as a kid the film often made me feel rather depressed for some reason, and when I looked at it again recently, and actually tackles quite a bit of mature subjects. The best friend in the film wants to have this peanut butter solution to grow his pubic hair, and I never rememberrd that at all from when I watched it as a kid. That moment was just plain gross.
I watch your videos alot... when I picked up my fone this morning I looked u up and you had just put out this same morning... a video on one of my all time favorite kid shows from my youth.... that's so awesome.... keep going minty... we are always watching!
I CANT believe on his list he didn't include that this series inspired M Night Shaymalan to write The Sixth Sense. Huge amazing fact. Shoulda made the list Minty!
this stuff started showing up on my youtube, LoL, watched a good chunk of these old shows. was pretty funny, but every once in a while they hit something pretty unsettling,
There was a rumor floating that the kids were really dead and there spirits couldn’t pass on till their story was worthy. Also at the time of the show my Son asked if they could do a Midnight Society in the yard. His friends were surprised that I allowed him to have a fire in the fire ring. He had the skills and I was at my office desk that overlooked the boys. So there was no danger but years later when these kids were in their upper 20’s they all came back to do it as adults. This time I was invited.
Thank you Minty for doing this episode. I am a true life time fan of Are You Afraid of the Dark. Loved every original first 5 season episodes. This is so awesome. Great job 😎
Thank you for making this video! AYAOTD was the cornerstone of SNICK, and SNICK was awesome! ‘90s Nickelodeon was the best and will never be forgotten!
I watched the first two of the now three revival series. They are limited multi-part series that are unrelated and show independent formations of their respective midnight societies, who then get involved with, rather than tell detached, their stories. It is a marked departure from the original (save for a very welcome and well-done reprisal of role in the second series that calls back the original) and I was frankly living for every second of it. The anthology model means a lot of the episodes have aged remarkably well and are still totally watchable today and even as an adult, even if the odd one or two are kind of awful on re-watch. I highly recommend giving the new ones a watch and I’d love to hear what you think. Watch them in order.
My favorite character was Kiki. The girl with the basecap & bandana because i ALWAYS loved tomboyish girls :] I also had a bit of a crush on her too. This show had so many awesome stories and thew whole style was really wonderfully done. The choice of camera angles, lighting, music and the overall mood and atmosphere. Heck, the OPENING alone was already perfect! Always watched this show while vising my grandparents because we could not receive Nickelodeon on TV at home due to our cable network provider who did not feed it into our line. One of my favorite stories was the one with the creepy little door in the basement where a monster lived inside, asking the boy of the family who just moved into this house, to feed him humans. And the door would always open when an old radio was on and playing music. The story about the kids who ended up in a videogame, was also awesome. The creative team behind this show gave us absolute magic in the 90s. :)
Every Saturday night my parents and I would turn off the lights in the living room, turn the TV to SNICK, and watch Are You Afraid of the Dark because they enjoyed it, too. Great memories!
That was a really good video, my dude! Well done! I was a kid when that show came out, and you hit bullseye on many points about it. Especially your take on the theme. It’s what me and my little sisters would watch on Saturday nights
used to watch this show all the time when i was a kid. Now, at 39 years of age, I still love this show. The classic episodes as well as the new ones. I have all three of them. And granted, it's not the original, but, they' are still very entertaining. Curse of the shadow is my favorite out of the three.
This show was not my introduction to horror, it was Universal Monsters. My father began to show me those films at 5 years old (1988). Years later, I discovered the extreme stuff (Freddy Kruger and Jason Vorhees) and became hooked. I got into Tales from the Crypt first followed by Tales from the Cryptkeeper and Are You Afraid of the Dark? As you can tell I'm a horror addict. Right now I'm writing a book about analyzing horror.
Great content!! Loved this show growing up, it was the perfect introduction to horror as a tween so I love that we got to learn more about the behind the scenes
The girl at the 20:40 mark of this video is Tatyana Ali from Fresh Prince of Bel-Air. On IMDB it says, she played in the episode The Tale of the Quicksilver.
For those who might not know, why don’t you say she played Ashley on Fresh Prince of Bel-Air. Because they might not know her name in real life and what character she played
Some others you might remember is Midnight Society's Eric played by Jacob Tierney best known afterwards for playing Glen on Letterkenny, Elisha Cuthbert (24, The Girl Next Door), Emily VanCamp (MCU's Sharon Carter), Jewel Staite (Firefly's Kaylee), Charles S. Dutton (Gothika, Legion, Alien 3, Roc) and my favorite Laura Bertram (Andromeda, Once Upon a Time, Ready or Not, 2019 Are You Afriad of the Dark).
Minty, thank you so so so much for featuring this show! Can you do Legends of the Hidden Temple too?! That would be awesome! As a huge fan of the original AYAOTD series, i was excited for the reboot. However, i did not like the concept of how they were all connected like a mini series of one story rather than all individual as the original ones were. I remember the feeling of watching SNICK on Saturday nights on Nickelodeon and waiting for AYAOTD to air. There are so many iconic characters and scenes in these episodes. I even own a Midnight Society shirt! 😁😁 Thank you again for another wonderful trip down memory lane!

the bookish babysitter, the tale of the quick silver, the frozen ghost, the super specs and the water zombie sea captain were the ones that scared me most as a kid
super specs was legit 🔥
Quick silver and frozen ghost terrified me. I’d also add the Shiny Red Bicycle to that list- the ghost scared the crap out of me but probably my favorite episode
Thanks so much for covering this delightful series! I remember watching this in the late 90s to early 2000s. Spooky season here we are! 🦇🕸👻🎃
I didn’t know it ended in 2000, I thought it ended earlier than that
@@nsasupporter7557 As explained in the video, AYAOTD had 5 seasons originally from 1992-1996, which got them to the 65 episodes necessary for syndication.
This really takes me back, I remember watching the show with my sister when we were kids, a lot of times we would make fun of it because there were a few episodes that were really cheesy but that's exactly why we loved it
I have been binge watching your back catalogue these last few weeks, and even though ive been watching your channel for a couple of years, on and off, I'm STILL nowhere near watching them all. No to be a kiss arse, but your channel is the only one i can never get bored watching! I am a fellow cinephile though, haha!
Seriously though, apart from the odd mispronounced word (which in my opinion only adds to the charm of your channel) your videos are so well researched they are just about perfect. Go on my son! Your are a proper Legend Minty me old mate
John Hurt was brilliant as the storyteller 👍👍
The actor who played Gary is now a weatherman on a local TV station here in Toronto Canada. 👍
There was once a fan theory that the kids around the campfire were actually dead, and that Gary was sort of like a guide leading them into the afterlife, with the campfire itself being a purgatory, thus explaining why they had different kids in the midnight society every once in a while.
There’s an idea for MatPat for an episode of Film Theory
That’s actually the same thing I thought😮
@@cubbiedog2814 I thought the mom was the one making the big money? I figured their dad was a stay-at-home and it probably explained why the kids were so chaotic.
Watch the newest ones when you get a chance. They do the legacy justice and keep the spirit alive of what the show was about. I hope they do a 4th one in the future.
Thanks, Minty. I loved watching Are You Afraid of the Dark when I was a kid. Thanks for the great info on the show.
I grew up with this. I looked forward to it every weekend. One particular episode really scared the crap out of me. Thanks Minty
Wooooooo! Love it when I see a notification from your channel 🎉
same
So glad you covered AYAOTD, Minty.
I really liked that closing shot with the candle, Minty! Very nice touch! 😊
man i loved this as a kid, this and goosebumps and eerie indiana
i have the full series DVD box set of Are You Afraid of the Dark and its both way more expensive and hard to find than you would think
I loved this show, thank you for bringing back such a fond memory from my childhood. This show was the original Goosebumps.
I remember seeing this show when I was young, the good old days, cool video as always Minty, keep up the good work, take care and Happy Halloween Sir
Despite being a Gen-X kid, I was always amazed that all these kids were allowed to wander through the woods alone so late at night.
I think the idea was they snuck out at midnight.
@@Eastsid3 Nah. Some episodes end with the gang having to go home, because of curfews being a thing.
@@xXLunatikxXlulalso, one episode that introduced Gary's younger brother he stated his mom forced him to bring him.
"I have to feed the hoooouuuunds!"
(also I had a huge crush on Gary when I was like 13 lol)
I think that one was called The Tale of the Doll Maker 😉
Betty Anne was a hot gorgeous latina. Those eyes were like laser beams to the soul😍
That 2019 revival got me excited to rewatch the originals again, Stopped watching TV in 2000. I no idea about “Curse of the Shadows” and “Ghost Island” !!! Thanks for the heads up !
Don't forget Emmanuel Chiquri, Tatiana Ali and Tia and Tamara Mowry
Grew up watching this and have also rewatched it several times as an adult. Still love it the same 🧡🖤 miss those days
Loved watching this with my cousins, brings back memories
Ghastly Grinner and Dead Man's Float are my favorite.
That and my folks let me watch the original IT when I was 4 😂
(Edit: the whole SNICK Saturday night lineup on Nickelodeon was absolute 🔥
Roundhouse, Ren & Stimpy, All That,
Pete & Pete, ect. We were spoiled lol )
I only know one other person who remembers the Round House! I STILL get that song stuck in my head.
you’re right, we were spoiled…9/10 kids shows nowadays are the absolute worst.
@@thehutch7728 That and I think every 90s kid who watched it remembers the mobile chair the dad character had. We ALL wanted that chair.
@@mst3KGf the dad with the Chair was hilarious 😂
I remember SNICK was a big deal on Saturday night, at least to my 5 year old self
Check out "Eerie Indiana" such a great show and insanely Under-rated. Sadly only lasted 1 season
definitely need new episodes of are You afraid of the dark again. This is totally awesome and I enjoyed every single minute of it too. Yeah you can say I'm a big fan of are You afraid of the dark. since the first episode I saw back then.
Loved this show
I always wanted to join the midnight society... great memories loved this show & hey dude, Pete&Pete, salute your shorts, legends of the hidden temple... awesome shows
This was a STAPLE of my teen years in the 90's.
Still enjoy this show today, I rewatch it every few months or so. Aron Tager (Dr. Vink, RIP) had one of the best evil laughs ever and was genuinely creepy. As for guest stars, there was also Jewel Staite in a few episodes, she went on to work on the Firefly series and of the Midnight Society members Sam and Megan have had decent careers as well in movies and series later on.
i rewatched the series & it aged very well. It brought back a lot of memories of being a kid in the 90’s. Love this show
I love that he showed the poster for the film The Peanut Butter Solution.
Minty hasn't done his research thoroughly enough, quite a few things are incorrect.
this stuff started showing up on my youtube, LoL, watched a good chunk of these old shows.
was pretty funny, but every once in a while they hit something pretty unsettling,
There was a rumor floating that the kids were really dead and there spirits couldn’t pass on till their story was worthy.
What a lovely heartwarming memory ❤
Thank you Minty for doing this episode. I am a true life time fan of Are You Afraid of the Dark. Loved every original first 5 season episodes. This is so awesome. Great job 😎
My favorite story was the one when the boy gets stuck in the pinball game.
He’s like a pinball wizard and stuff
Thank you for making this video!
AYAOTD was the cornerstone of SNICK, and SNICK was awesome!
‘90s Nickelodeon was the best and will never be forgotten!
This video was submitted for approval by the Midnight Society
Ohhh man,now this is nostalgia crack! 🤣 Used to scare the crap outta me as a kid this show did! So cool to see you covering it MINT!
LOL Canadians
Every Saturday night my parents and I would turn off the lights in the living room, turn the TV to SNICK, and watch Are You Afraid of the Dark because they enjoyed it, too. Great memories!
Please for the love of God do red dog please please please please please
My friends and I lived for Snick. We'd have sleepovers every Saturday and watch, with Are You Afraid Of The Dark being our favorite Snick show.
Hey Minty! Great videos. Can you do a video for Hey Dude?
I used to love watching this, along with Tales from the Crypt, Eerie Indiana and Round the Twist.
This is definitely one my favorite videos of yours Minty!
Canadian TV Gold! This and Reboot on YTV, with Snit and Phil... the 90s ♡
I loved this growing up, and was the highlight of my Saturday nights!
Brilliant episodes growing up on these
the tale of midnight madness is still my favorite episode🔥 orpheos curse was also a great pc game!
Thank you SO much for covering this!!
The order of these types of shows I liked the most are around the twist, errie Indiana, are you afraid the dark and then goosebumps
Growing up in Canada this was staple in YTV broadcasting! I loved this show when I was a kid!
This and Goosebumps!
😁😁 Thank you again for another wonderful trip down memory lane!
i was 12 years old in '92 and watched this show intently for several years. this retrospective made me seek it out again, and i watched episodes until 4am last night lmao. thanks minty! super nostalgic for me.
I just finished seasons 1 and 2. such a great show to grow up with. Midnight Madness was the only episode that actually scared me. God I miss the 90s...
Thanks for this such amazing details. It’s crazy because you never know or see how truly difficult it is to make these shows and what the actors and crew members have to go through. This show was such a huge part of my childhood, the 90’s nick shows were truly the best. And this show used to scare the crap out of me lol
This came out when I was 12 or 13... My brother, my dad, and I watched it every week. My old man used to call it "Are You Afraid of the *Dork* ".
Made my brother and I laugh every time. R.I.P., ol' timer.
Awesome Minty!!! Great choice!!!
Great show from the 90s!!
I loved this growing up. This was awesome.
Yoooo Minty coming in clutch ! Always nostalgia gold!!! 💜🔥🔥🔥
I loved this show growing up, thank you for the hard work you put into this video!
Yes. One of my favorite shows growing up. Good times like you said
