  • YES - FROM A PAGE - New Box Set & Vinyl ⁣- OUT NOW at burningshed.co... ⁣ featuring the 2008-2011 touring line-up of YES: Chris Squire, Steve Howe, Alan White, Oliver Wakeman & Benoit David.
    Box Set consists of:
1 CD: 4 new mixes of previously unreleased YES studio tracks: ‘To The Moment’, ‘Words On A Page’, ‘From The Turn Of A Card, ‘The Gift Of Love’
+ 2 CD: YES - In The Present Live From Lyon (Remastered)⁣
+ Bonus Track: ‘Second Initial’ (live)⁣
    + 2 x booklets⁣
Artwork & logos by Roger Dean
New 'To The Moment' lyric video edited by Oliver Wakeman (2019).
Steve Howe describes the FROM A PAGE project as: “Good music never goes away or lays down to the commercial pressures that exist. Oliver’s compositions, “To the Moment”, “Words on a Page” and “From the Turn of a Card” demonstrate his musicality and talents, whilst “The Gift of Love” explores the collaborative essence of YES, pooling ideas and then working together on its arrangement, whilst utilising all of its many themes and variations. Karl Groom and Roger Dean both contributed their skills towards making this a worthy further ‘page’ in YES‘s long and diverse musical adventures.”
Oliver Wakeman says: “Following Chris Squire’s passing, I felt that the new music we’d created, but not released, should be heard and not sit unfinished on a shelf. And with Steve, Alan and Benoit’s enthusiasm for the project, I am proud to know that this music will get to see the light of day and, hopefully, be enjoyed by YES fans as a piece of previously hidden Yes history.”
Alan White added: “I’m pleased to see a gem of YES history coming to fruition in the form of this mini box set. New songs from the past and I’m hoping we can find even more music in the archives for future releases.”

Buy the album. The four tracks alone are worth it. Oliver shows off even more of his keyboard wizardry in the longer version of "To the Moment." "Words on a Page" brought tears to my eyes, Benoit's voice is magnificent, Oliver's piano is beautiful and intricate and Howe soars at the end. And, of course, don't miss the chance to hear Chris Squire one last time.

Nothing could be further from the truth about Davison. He doesn't struggle at all, and since he has a natural countertenor range (which is the highest vocal range that a male voice can have), he hits those notes pretty effortlessly and almost always is dead on. Benoit, on the other hand, yes he sounds great in the studio, and he started out sounding great live, but he couldn't handle the stress on his voice, and it gave out, which is why they had to replace him. listen to some bootlegs from late 2011, Benoit was struggling very much to keep up and it sounds terrible, his voice just gave out. Davison has been there for almost 8 years at this point and his voice is still going strong.

Wow! I understand it was a business decision to oust Oliver Wakeman to bring the Drama lineup back (and they couldn't resist the marketing opportunities it brought), but look what we almost lost! Sure, Jon D might be a more reliable live singer, but his voice is just *too* clean and choirboyesque. So earnest and eager to please, wholesome and well-spoken - it just doesn't do it for me. Benoit had a bit of the gruffness that Jon Anderson did, and blended much better with Chris' beautiful backing vocals - as proven here majestically.
I've already listened to this more times than each track from Heaven and Earth put together! There's an excitement there, a catchiness that never approaches being cheesy (despite the lyrics being admittedly a tad twee...), and those high notes before the chorus - beautiful! Melodically much better and stronger than anything from H&E, and Oliver's keys are tasteful, with some lovely flourishes - this just SOUNDS and FEELS like Yes again, and I can't wait to hear the rest!
I wouldn't blame Oliver for telling them where to stick it, but they really should do everything in their power to get him back in the band again - the excitement of the Drama lineup reuniting has long since fizzled out, it's time for a positive change again.

    • @Mr._Mints

Pete Hepple I totally agree, especially about the singers! I’ve never been able to put my finger on it, but I’ve never cared for Jon Davison’s vocals. But I think you said it right when you said he’s too clean and eager to please. I thought Benoit was a much better fit overall and was sad to see he only got to be on one album.
I want to follow what Yes is doing; I want to see them on tour and enjoy their new music. But Jon D’s vocals just turn me away for the most part. They’re definitely the biggest reason I chose to see Yes ft. ARW a year or two ago instead of the official Yes. Plus ARW had Rick Wakeman! And I do enjoy Trevor Rabin’s guitar playing, as well. And with Chris Squire being no longer with us, Trevor’s backing vocals are the next best backup to Jon Anderson.

I think O. Wakeman was gone before Fly From Here was recorded with Downes. But getting rid of Benoit was a disaster. Jon D. is simply not in the same league, live or on disc. Well, you can certainly tell it's a Wakeman! I always thought Benoit was the better replacement Anderson than Jon Davidson. Agree with the others about JD - struggles to sound like Jon Anderson (no one can so stop trying) rather than bringing his own voice to the party (maybe that's is, but seems to be pushing way too hard to hit the notes). Benoit went high but it sounded true. What happened to him, BTW?

There are live recordings of Benoit struggling to sing Heart of the Sunrise (with all of its long, high notes) that sadly illustrate what Nathan said in his comment above. If Stone Ocean gets adapted, I hope they use this as the ending song: the original Joestars began with Yes, and end with Yes, and with the most fitting song of all.

This song reflexes Jotaro and Jolyne's relationship.
Stardust Crusaders and Vento Aureo had two EDs, so I think Stone Ocean should have "Unchained" from Van Halen as the first one, and this one as the second one. Or, hell, let this one be the *third* ED, with "Virtual Insanity" as the second one, to hit us in the feels.

I knew there was something I really liked about this line up when I saw them in 2008 and 2010. Too bad we did not get this music at the time, but it is surely nice to have it now. Glad the guys agreed that it was worth releasing. Seeing them in 2010 in New Orleans right after The Saints won the Super Bowl is one of my favorite memories. Benoit even wore a Saints T-Shirt under his outfit and revealed it mid show to a huge round of applause. All of my musician friends were there, and I even saw Benoit on the street afterward walking to his hotel and got to shout “great show, man!”

Benoit David has a great voice and, in my opinion, worked really well within the Yes framework. This is a great song proving that point. I do feel that Yes have tried to dininish what he and Oliver Wakeman added - first with the unceremonious replacement of Wakeman and then the re-recorded "Fly From Here - Return Trip", which must have felt like a slap in the face to Benoit David. Well done to Oliver Wakeman for making this previously undiscovered music public.

This still isn't 100% "real" Yes to me, but it's much nicer than than the Trevor Horn show on _Fly From Here_ and that awful piece of drek _Heaven and Earth._ Ditching Oliver for Geoff Downes just because Trevor Horn said to only shows what cutthroats the remnants of this once-great band are.
