  • Salvinia Minima floating aquarium plant is an awesome addition to most fish tanks. It’s a great way to remove fish waste from your aquarium. This floating plant prefers bright lighting and still waterways.
When growing Salvinia in your aquarium, use a filter with low flow to not disturb the water surface too much. This plant prefers still and stagnant water surface. Sometimes with a filter on your aquarium that hangs on the side it’s difficult to keep floating plants like this alive because of the current the filter put out.

You will need an aquarium LED light between the spectrums of 5000 K to 7000 K. Anything outside of that is probably not going to grow this Floating Aquarium Plant known as Salvinia.
It is advised to hang your aquarium lights between 4 to 7 inches above the water surface of your aquarium. This enables the floating plants to receive a more spread out pattern of the lighting. It also prohibits the light from burning the floating plant sitting at the surface.

I've grown this plant with a hang on the back filter, I disagree with you saying it doesn't grow in flowing water. I simply use air tubing. This disperses any flow and creates a nursery for when the plants are still young and immature. These plants naturally grow in canals and streams, which do have some flow. Obviously, don't put them in a tank with a power head pointed at the surface, such as a river tank setup. I've grown them in a stagnant flow tank and the tank I've got now, and honestly, they've done a lot better with a slight amount of flow. Just thought I'd say as don't want people to be put off thinking they can only use sponge filters to have floating plants. Love the channel. Keep up the good work 👍

What do you mean you use air tubing?

@@dezrenee6863They mean that they use air tubing to create a floating ring that will separate the plant from other stuff around it and decrease the flow of water moving the plant this way and that. Essentially, it creates a “calmer” area in a tank with a bit higher flow and/or surface movement

I have had floating species in a tank with a power head pointed at the surface but it was in a 80” long tank so the flow died out about 1/4 the length so that would be whybthey did well.

Now you've made me worry about the high light and surface turbidity that I've just thrown my salv into 😂

@shaunt7069 your level of accountability is very commendable! I'm concerned for the same reason but because of my secondary light for a basking turtle

I was actually bidding on eBay for some rotalla and hornwort bundle and the Salvinia Minima was just a bonus plant in the bundle. I have a 125 with shrimp and endler/guppy hybrids with an oto cat and a corydorus along with a kuhli loach. Had some random plants but bought some dragon stone and some wood I want to drain it and scape the tank. Going to find a moss I like and cover the dragon stone and the wood. Run sponge filter all bio with an overflow tank 40g under neath. Hoping to make it a good looking natural tank when done.

I would say that moving water is ok but better at a minimum. The lighting I have I only keep a couple inches from surface and all surface plants have done decent. As that ok for myself as I need the light penetration for rooted plants in tank

You are WRONG! You can have flow and Salvinia will grow fast. In fast, when you start out with just a few pieces, having it float around the surface will help it get started.

Cats are basically people's children sometimes, they're part of the family. Don't know how you could take something like that so literally
