The ridges in the axe head are there for a better friction fit, that's how I see it. But another informative video. Thank you for taking time to film, edit and post this video.
most un marked axes with eye ridges are kelly woodslahers. I have two doubles and one Michigan pattern woodslahers to haft. thinking about hanging one of the doubles today. I got a vintage green label link store bought handle from the days when people still used axes lol. God bless
What a great tip: applying a friction reducing agent to the eye or handle. Definitely a winner. I'll be employing that one the next handle job. Yeah, "eye ridges", they are a patented feature of a certain axe manufacturer. I forget which company has it...I mean, that was way before my existence. But, I recall reading about in one of my x-net researches. That was after i filed them down...what bonehead move(on my part). The ridges add quite a bit of lateral support to the finished product. Great to see someone notating it. I dig yir stuff.

I think those ridges aren’t there to hold the head on, maybe just a reference mark to keep sanding, oh they’re on the back too, idk then
What happens if the axe eye isn't tight on one side? What should do? How do fix it?
Thanks for the question. Unfortunately without more info the best I can say is depends... I am assuming you saying the eye isn't tight after you have wedged it? If that's the case you need a thick wedge. So pulling the old wedge out is necessary. The lower part of the eye should never really be loose against the handle. If that has happened you're probably mounting it crooked. You really want the tongue (part of the handle going through the eye) to be centered up and balanced within the eye so as you wedge it it's expanding evenly. Hope some of that helps.
@@StumptownAxes thanks for the attention. I meant the eye of the axe head it self with no wedge or handle in it. So if you look into the empty eye one side is not tighter like it should be and both sides are the same size is what I meant. What do I do in that case?
