    Hi Roger,
I’ve been living with hypertension, MS and a few other things for many, many years. I also have a rheumatic heart. So I feel I can share with you a couple things I know from experience. The most important is how much stress takes a toll on you. Oh I know that it’s not possible to have no stress but try your very best to keep your world as stress free as possible. We are close is age and I have learned to let things go much more easily than I did when I was younger. I actually ended up in hospital four years ago literally almost gone. I had a large bleeding ulcer. No blood means no oxygen. Made me really reevaluate things. So, less stress wherever you can.
Salt. I swear it’s in everything! There are a lot of salt free spices you can buy though. It is true that prepared foods are usually very high in sodium. Buy sweet butter not salted. I buy Kerry, Irish, or a couple of French ones. All very good and no salt. Honestly though it is impossible to avoid sodium 100%. There is even, albeit very small, in fruits and vegetables. I don’t like doctors and nurses that are alarmists unless it is a real emergency. I bet your heart rate was elevated because you were nervous more than anything. If it was dangerously off they wouldn’t have sent you home. The low sodium, eat healthily, take a walk and basically no alcohol is all good advice. What we should all be doing. I just disapprove when they treat you like you are a bad and or stupid person. If she asked me if she can hell me I would say no thank you I would like to speak with the doctor. And drink lots of water. It helps your blood pressure.
Which gets me to your visit coming up. Will Hannah or your son be able to go with you? Especially if interacting with doctors and having any medical issues is new to you. It’s important to have another set of ears. Take notes, record it on your phone, whatever works for 2:44 you.
Might also ask if they have a printed diet for their patients. Maybe a list of yes and no foods. I know things work differently there than here in the US. Just remember, there is no such thing as a stupid question. Or to say you don’t understand something. Request they explain it again. No matter how big or small - it’s their job. Anything you think of before you go write it down. At least I have to or I may not remember when I get there.
I hope everything goes well and will be thinking about you. Do keep us posted please. We all care.
Take a deep breath and try to get rest. Lisa

Thanks. The new diet has virtually no salt - but sea fish obviously has some natural salt content - meat and eggs virtually none. I've stopped bread which means no butter and the sugary marmalade (replaced with eggs for breakfast). I've also cut out potatoes and other starchy veggies and replaced with non-starchy veg. That's all for a more healthy diet and hopefully some weight-loss - high protein/low carbs. I've cut my wine down to 1 bottle spread over the week-end and changed to decaf coffee for my blood-pressure. I will find out the results of my blood tests on Monday via a phone consultation. The tablets have already reduced my blood-pressure to a much more acceptable level.

Hi Roger, I really feel for you. I'm 62 years old and in October 2023, I was just under 20 stones, Type 2 diabetic, breathless all the time and was suffering irregular heartbeat and feeling pretty crap all the time. My GP told me, because of medication I was on, losing weight would be difficult. Like you, I came out of the surgery feeling despondent! I was angry with the doctor and angry with myself for letting myself go. I knew I had to try to do something. I joined the local Slimming World group and as of last week , 15/5/2024, I have lost 1/2 a pound short of 5 stones. I have reversed the type 2 diabetes diagnoses, my heartbeat is now regular and I am no longer breathless. I try and walk, at pace, 5 miles a day. I now cook everything from fresh. The benefits have been amazing for losing the weight. Mobility has improved no end, with less stress on my hips and knees.
I hope that everything goes well with your ECG. Once you have the results, you'll be able to make an informed decision on how to move forward.
    Kindest regards

Hi Roger. I understand your concerns and worry about the test on Friday. I will say heart procedures have come a long way- if they do indeed find something. My husband developed Atrial Fibrillation ( AFIB ) last year. Getting his heart back into rhythm involved a shock. It took five minutes from beginning to end. No OR and he left the hospital two hours later. He's had no problems since.
I also had an issue and what would have involved open heart surgery was instead done through a tiny incision on the inside of my wrist. I don't want to share TMI but hope to reassure you that medicine has come a long way! ❤
Oh and a glass of red wine can have beneficial side effects! As they say, we can look at life with the glass half full or empty, but remember it can always be refilled.

Hi Roger! Since you have so graciously and generously shared your expertise with orchids and bonsai, I would like to pay that back. I have been a dance teacher for about 30 years which includes anatomy/kinesiology, strength and flexibility training, injury prevention and recovery as well as sports nutrition. The recommendation of checking all packaged foods for salt should also include sugar. Pre-prepared food often has a lot of hidden sugar which can affect your weight. I don’t believe in special diets, such as the carnivore diet, I have seen them cause more harm than good. It sounds like you are eating a fairly healthy and balanced diet so my advice is moderation. Yes to more protein but you can do that with plants as well. I changed out my wheat pasta for bean, chickpea, or pea pasta. Research portion sizes for the food you eat. They are usually MUCH smaller than most people realize. Some people opt to use smaller plates as well. Water, water, water! Our bodies need lots of water and most people are in a chronic state of dehydration and don’t know it. Lastly, a common complaint of back pain is from tight glutes and weak abdominals. Muscle tightness is a root cause for so many aches and pains including headaches, and the medical community doesn’t always do the best job of addressing this. Physical therapists on the other hand tend to be the exception. I have taught a stretch and strengthen class for many years and it ended up attracting more non-dancer older adults who found significant pain relief (including myself!) from releasing muscle and fascial tightness and strengthening the muscles that support the joints. If you would like additional help please let me know. Although it sounds like you have an excellent resource in your son. I suspect your irregular heart beat and shortness of breath would improve with light exercise but of course you need to be cleared by a medical professional first. Hope that your ecg goes well and there are no major issues. I will be praying for you.

There's a good documentary series out about the longest living people on earth. They all share the same ground principals, they have a healthy mostly plant based diet. They exercise not just in form of sport but some have sustained physical activity as their only form of exercise. Things like gardening for a few hours a day, walking up and down hills where they live and just any activity that kept the pulse up for an extended period of time. Some of the oldest where from Sardinia and they often had a glass of wine with the family. NB:
Less salt may be good but on a warm summers day you sweat it out and you have to get some salt to sustaine proper hydration as well.

    Hi Rodger,
Rick L sent us (his subscribers) over to say hi and to send healing prayers and thoughts. I’m listening to you about your health and if you’ll allow me, here are my thoughts:
I totally believe that nutrition can turn around nearly any health condition. May not be”cure” it but will definitely play a giant part in it. I am NOT a health professional. I have no degrees in nutrition. I am merely someone who’s done research and taken on all of what I am suggesting and seen the effects on my body:
Raw seeds : sunflower, pumpkin, flax. Chia: add it to Steele cut oats about 1/2 to 1 t
Add green veggies (kale) to your plate 1/2 to 3/4 should be veggies
Anything white - (starches) should be substituted for whole grains - quinoa, faro- wheat berries all in moderation.
Drink water - ask your doctor how much water is good for u rn. Add ginger! Pure ginger root. Make teas- smoothies have it daily. Ginger is Gods miracle
Lastly believe . Believe and have faith (whatever that looks like for you) that you will be taken care of. Add gratitude to your daily routine.
Btw- I totally believe that the true butter is the best. Please don’t do the margarines and plant based.
I’ll be praying for you. Stay loving- stay healthy 😍❤️🙏🏻

Yes it is a bit of a shock and wake-up call when you get this told to you. I have just ben through it to so here is somethings I would like you to know but what you want to do and believe is your choice. Butter is far better than the margarine spreads (powerful adverts are to blame here). I did 20yrs in the Armed forced and could not lose weight to fit into there little boxes so don't expect any miracles there. When you mentioned shortness of breath this can be serious as you suspect. It happened the same to me quite quickly, notice it one day when going to the Post office and took note. After several other triggers saw my GP who sent me for cardiac testing and I ended up with 3 stents in Arteries to my heart. That was 1 year ago now and have not looked back. So I wish you well and try not to dwell on it until you have the facts from the tests and the discussion with your Doctor.

As a nurse for many years, my contribution is simply Moderation. No sense in making yourself miserable. Enjoy a glass of wine - certainly your idea of alternating is moderation. In planning your walks, why not start with a leisurely walk at first - at least you're moving - pick up the pace a bit as days go by. You have probably found that the frozen, canned things are loaded with sodium - you mentioned you already had that one. You may need some medication for the irregular pulse but you may find a little moderation in the other areas might just do the trick! Always easier to deal with something when you know what the issue actually is - waiting & wondering certainly doesn't help any of us. Best wishes for an enlightening appointment.

I went on the carnivore diet for health reasons, not to lose weight, but I dropped 25 pounds easily. Low or no carbs is the key to weight loss in my opinion.

@@mamabear9389 How does that make sense in a natural setting? We've been eating 90+% unprocesed vegetables for all eternity as humans. Anyone that couldn't eat vegetables would have been instantly dead.

@90skid97 Well, some feel we ate mainly meat until agriculture period started. Personally, I am doing what works for me. The carnivore diet cured my IBS so that is what I do. It may not work for others. Everyone is different. It is worth trying if all else fails, which is why I tried it. One thing it will do is knock the weight off without being hungry.

I have arrhythmia ( in my case is genetic). All i can say reduce intake of alcohol and caffeine ( in coffee and tea) because this is a major contributor in irregular heartbeat and then take it from there. And definitely loose weight because your heart has to work twice as hard! As for butter listen to your son! Plant based spread is one ingredient away to be a paint stripper... imagine what has to be put in there to make it look like butter, have consistency and colour of a butter and it taste horrible! Butter, in moderation, is healthier option!! And I wouldnt go as far as operation and fitting a peacemaker just yet! Just make changes to your lifestyle and see how you get on

I will be cutting out bread - that gets rid of the need for any type of butter/spread and removes a massive sugar hit - marmalade. Breakfast will be eggs.

Please please do not wait for diet and weight changes to fix your blood pressure! Get your doc to rx medication NOW, he can take you off if you lose enough weight. Meanwhile you are not damaging your heart, kidneys, and risk of stroke. There are also medications for irregular heart beats. It’s a fact of life that as we live longer we need meds to keep quality of life.

Funny thing - I've completely cut out margarine and other plant-based spreads of similar nature because those are the worst fats you can have ... and replaced them all with butter! I swear, if you try to follow all the food advice, you'll just go insane.

Change is uncomfortable, usually! So don't take it all at once, start with the weight because that will free up the pressure on the heart.
And you will feel lighter too, which will give you more energy. Get the exercise while doing something you like doing, e.g., dancing or fencing or bell ringing. But, of course, walking is the cheapest but make it interesting like walking in the woods or on the beach or window shopping! Something relaxing y pleasurable, BUT Sustained. Easy to lower sodium with all the herbal seasonings that you can grow outside your door. At least, you can have your wine, just keep in mind the old adage, everything in moderation y reduce the amount gradually so you won't feel so deprived. One of the best y fastest diets I've found is the low carb diet. It was fun y the weight came off pretty quickly. When calculating daily carb intake, read labels for total carbs, then subtract fiber for net carbs to get total daily. I usually set my daily carb goal total at 100 mgs. But keep balanced food intake to get essential nutrients. So happy EKG on Friday y just know, it's probably fine or you wouldn't be able to do all that you do without mishap. HAPPY NOTE: little skinny buds emerging on my two buddleias. FYI, recently acquired a buddleia TREE, 1 gal. so it will be awhile before it fills out y produces purple flowers. It's in a large container so will underplant with Rudbeckia (yellow Black-eyed Susan) y Queen Anne's Lace. Thank you for health update. Getting older is such an inconvenience!!!💖💖
