I was there...age 19. It was rain, shine, rain, shine - a typical summer's day anywhere in the UK. I wore a sneer and was there to see the heavyweights - Floyd, Page & Plant. I was into Rock, and Pixes-era early grunge. I had a notion of Tears for Fears as some uncool, sappy pop band. They slowly melted me with their set over about 45 mins and I remember having a lump in my throat at the end. A clueless teenaged me is out in the crowd there somewhere......
I work mixing bands at local clubs and a good percentage of the ones I've worked with have played this song. And they've done it justice. Just this past Saturday I had a trio that played this song. Simple percussion, an acoustic guitar player who sang and a cellist. They finished their show with this song and killed it. I'll share the video on my page if you're interested.
I prefer this lyricm form the song "Wang Dang Sweet Poontang" by Ted Nugent. "A-shakin' my thang as a rang-a-dang-dang in the bell Ooh, baby. She's so sweet when she yanks on my meat. Down on the street you know she can't be beat", but those are good too....
Once in a generation, a song is unveiled to the world, and it ends up being timeless tune...as a boy I remember hearing this song and even then I realized that this was something special...years later im still thinking the same...
I agree 100%. I was raised on mid-late 60s and 70s music, as well as the best classical, jazz, and blues from the past . So I have a pretty broad perspective, and with that in mind, I will say that "Everybody Wants To Rule The World" is about as perfect a pop song as there ever has been (..in terms of music, lyrics, studio performance, and recording quality..). I have never gotten tired of it, which is more than I can say for a lot of music since the early 90s. FWIW, if aliens landed on Earth & wanted to know about the best music that humans have created, I would include this song for sure!
This album came out towards the end of my senior year in HS. When I left for college, I made sure that this album came with me. Still among my favorites all these years later❤️

So interesting to see earlier live footage and to observe the gradual evolution of their voices to a more open tone as opposed to their earlier stuff. They really still fire on all cylinders these days, and slight changes in vocal technique are no doubt part of that equation.
The Bible is truth. Please read Genesis Mathew and one you chose yourself. It’s an important milestone to hit. As well as the inner work of forgiveness as an adult. Start with your parents, they’ve loved you. To be forgiven we must forgive. It’s an important show of faith to God. Forgiveness shows love is in your heart. This and woman in chains are just magical. The original title to this song was supposed to be “everybody wants to start a war”, written in Cold War times. Love it
Even as a kid in the 80s I was drawn to this band. Something different about them. Really poetic - slightly melancholic - still uplifting - clever. The quality lasts still. Great songwriting.
This song plays every day on the radio up here in Alaska. It brings me so much mysterious nostalgia about all the places in Alaska I’ve been, kinda hard to explain
