  • The Museum’s “Cat” (BuNo 48294) was accepted by the US Navy in October of 1943 and had an extensive career that would take her halfway around the world. Flown first from the factory where she was built in San Diego to her base in Norfolk, VA where she was assigned to VPB-92. Her missions would then take her to French Morocco, the Canary Islands, Gibraltar, and the Azores hunting German submarines in the late-war years.
This airplane would remain in service with the Navy and on loan to the Coast Guard following the end of WWII. The Museum’s PBY was retired in 1956 with 3,567 flying hours on the airframe. The aircraft was obtained by the Museum in 2001.
    Filmed in 2021.

My father worked with these in darwin during the war, they were painted black, they mined Japanese harbours and rescued downed airmen.

Absolutely beautiful. The PBY is one of the most important aircraft of its time, which played so many crucial roles in many theaters of WWII, like this particular one did in the battle of the Atlantic. My favorite fun fact about the Catalina is that to this day, it still holds the world record for longest-duration 'commercial' flight. In 1943-45, Qantas flew a route from Perth to Sri Lanka, which was only ~3600 miles but since the Catalina only cruised at a leisurely 110 knots, they were in the air 28-32 hours, giving the route he unofficial name 'flight of the two sunrises'. In order for it to stay up that long, they turned the plane into a flying gas can with a max useful load of 3 passengers and 150 lbs of mail.

They run one somewhere out at the Eugene Airport. Not sure if this is the same team but working out there I see it flying around all the time. Beautiful bird.

Camera frame rate is matching the prop RPM so it looks like they're not moving but I wouldn't advice getting your head too close.

@@johnarnold893 They anticipated Paul, so they put the wing up high on a pylon to protect his head. It keeps the rngines dry as well.
