  • A little while back I met up with fellow landscape photographer Mark Rodgers for some landscape photography, and he was kind enough to share with me a secret waterfall he found in the Southwest of WA. So I decided to go back and see if I could find a composition amongst all the chaos.

I believe not many people are aware of the location of these falls, so I am reluctant to share the exact location of where they are. The area around the waterfall is thick with twisted tree trunks and branches, which makes accessing the falls quite a challenge.
As I was approaching the falls, the clouds were starting to part, allowing more of the sunlight through creating a more contrasted scene, not ideal for waterfalls. I would have preferred more cloud cover providing flatter light for the scene.
After exploring the area, I settled on a composition where a twisted branch was creating a loop and providing a natural window or framing around the waterfall. With a shallow depth of field, I needed to focus stack the image.

You create such drama and emotion in your images Andrew. Fellow west Aussie here, but only an enthusiastic amateur photographer. I’ve visited most of your locations, however your twisted waterfall has me intrigued. Can understand why you’d want to keep it secret though.

Thanks Paul, you're right I usually think of leading lines when I'm looking at composing a scene. This challenging spot forced me to think a little differently. Thanks for your kind comments and feedback.

Thanks for that Ross, I always enjoy your comments mate. I'm glad you enjoyed this. One of the advantages of shooting waterfalls in the middle of the day is I can take my time shooting the video footage and exploring the area, cheers! :)

Glad you enjoyed the video Ryan, thanks for leaving a comment mate. I'll be honest, the Wallabies were pretty much down to luck. I had the camera on and in my hand shooting the white Lillies when I heard the group of Wallabies heading over the ridge towards me. I just swung around, hit record and pointed the camera, cheers!

@@Andrew_marr I got my favourite pic of a bird like this he popped out of the water right in front of my tripod while I was shooting a sunset.

Interesting place Andrew. It's always fun to find these unusual and secluded locations even they're challenging to reach. I had a few of these places on my list this last Autumn but unfortunately most were dry due to a lack of rain here in NY. I was wondering how you were going to take the image with so much light on the water but it seems you got the cloud cover you hoped for. Thanks for sharing it with us - stay safe.
UPDATED: I was actually a bit behind on your videos. I know that you tested the Z7 and now know you've added it to your kit. I've been torn a bit about going FF mirrorless but it does seem the way to go. I really LOVE my OLY 4/3 kit and want to start building my FF mirrorless so the last few videos you have provided some great insights. Thanks!

Thanks Miguel, these little spots off the beaten track are great and can be rewarding which makes the challenge all worthwhile. We also have had a lack of rain over winter, but a few heavy fronts have come through in the last month which pushed a little water with the falls. It should be heavier than this in the falls at this time of the year. The dilemma of moving from crop to Ful Frame can be tricky. I sat on my cropped sensor camera (a Nikon) for years before moving. I didn't regret it when I did. Best of luck with the decision, let me know what you do! :)

As per usual another great vlog and ripper of an image. Did you consider doing a black & white of the waterfall with the wooden arch?

  • @johnbentley1056
    @johnbentley1056 3 роки тому

Beautiful images and great video as always. I loved the image of the waterfall through the tree arch. Although I did find myself spending more time looking at the bark texture in the top part of the frame. Every time I watch one of your videos Andrew its like you have cranked the videography up another level. Your use of slow motion, camera movement, transition and pacing all help to give your video a more cinematic feel which makes it a pleasure to watch. Superb work. Definitely a masterclass.

And I think sometimes it’s good to have a few secret spots mate, keeps the art 📸 mysterious.

Hey Richard, thank mate! The advantage of shooting waterfalls during the day is I"m not under as much time pressure and I can capture a little more of what 's going on around me. Those wallabies were a bit of luck though, I was busy filming the white flowers when a group of them charged over the hill behind me, I quickly swung the camera around and hit record.

Absolutely stunning first image Andrew! That was well worth the effort and time spent getting there and the struggle to get the right composition. PS... probably best not to share the location, that can lead to "Over Exposure" ;-)

  • @kiwicit0

Absolutely masterful shot through the wooden arch, my only personal preference would be to have backed off a tad on exposing the shadows of the arch as it tends to dominate the image and draws me away from the waterfall! Lovely videography as usual! Best, Mike

That was a fascinating location and some beautiful images. I especially liked the one with the tree framing the waterfall. Did you take any shots of just those wonderfully twisted and bent trunks and branches - might have made an interesting abstract.

  • @BrianHorsey

Interesting location Andrew, the light looked trickey. Great before and after dissolves again, I preferred the second image, to me the tree in the first overwhelmed the waterfall. You didn’t say, or I missed, when you were there, is there much variation in the flow during the year? Cheers.
