Lived in America for almost 20 yrs.The ones that got to me the most are : -The "strongly suggested" 15% tip -Ads for medical products -The sales tax and yesss those Easy Cheese cans. In my country, for many restaurants service charge is already included in the bill. In fast foods mostly, it's not. But we don't get served by a particular person so it's hard to give a tip. For restaurants without service charge it's up to the customers if they would give a tip. Tip is equivalent to how happy customers were with the service. You don't get banned by not giving a tip.
Not everyone here in Malaysia afford to apply credit card, we now use something call e-wallet. You can pay by using e-wallet from your smartphone, its convenient, you don't have to withdraw cash all the time.
We, the oriental people are educated not to owe money as much as we can, but the western culture (especially the capitalism culture) wants the people to use money by credit, even though the people are not eligible to take the loan. That's why there was the subprime crisis in 2007.

My mom would hang a small plastic bag on top of the sink for us to throw away all leftovers into before putting the dishes into the sink. Then she'll tie it up tightly before throwing it in the garbage bin. That way, the sink won't clog up and the kitchen won't smell of food waste. You could also use it as composte if you wanna go one step further.

Tipping is not mandatory. Please don't feel you are obligated to tip. Despite what you may have heard, people who work in these positions make minimum wage, set by the local government. Americans are very generous, and individualistic and we loathe to patronize businesses whom don't meet our standards thus why tipping is held as a carrot. It seems European and Asian countries do not emphasize good service and just accept bad service for which they have the pleasure of paying for. Americans are more than willing to pay more for their services, but the operators of these businesses are simply too greedy. Case in-point, now, during the COVID situation, may businesses are closing simply because they cannot find enough workers to fulfill. The solution is simple, raise the wages of the workers and raise the prices of the goods or services! But instead, the operators choose to shut-up shop!
The tips are suppose to give the servants/waiters, but in Malaysia, that 10% service charge will never fly from the pocket of the boss to the hand of those employees...
malaysia dont have a tipping culture is because we actually paid our waiter and waiteress a salary... while waiter and waiteress in america get paid below minium wages and have to survive on tips that they earn to actually make a living.. apparently this is to ensure that the waiter and waiteress provide a good service to the customer.

Have just discovered your videos and am thoroughly enjoying them. Doggy bag. Earlier people were ashamed to say in a restaurant that they would take home and eat the same food for dinner or the next day. So they started saying ‘I’d like to take this home for my dog’. So it was called a Doggy Bag. In the year 2000 when I moved from Malaysia to Sri Lanka my apartment had a garbage disposal. Having traveled extensively in the US I was familiar with it. But being Asian disliked wasting energy to grind food waste which could be dumped in the bin. And I can so totally get the Malaysian food connection. Even now if visit KL first thing in the morning my friends will Tapao kway tew and fried bananas for my breakfast and my absolute favourite is Beef Rendang and Nasi Lemak, though my hubby prefers Kampung Chicken.
fun fact..actually you can leave a tips to the restaurant in malaysia at thr cashier. just say baki simpan then they know that you giving them tips..it's uncommon but the reaction on their face is priceless haha
another different story with me. when I'm at Mamak, they were always give me discount instead, let's say if I have to pay for 5.40, they'll just 5, and I'll make cutesy face in return 😁

Out of all these American cultural niche, I would say tipping the waitress is uniquely American. I remember in the opening scene of the film 'Reservoir Dogs' (Directed by Quentin Tarantino) when Mr. Pink (Steve Buscemi) refused to tip the waitress, the rest of the robbers were upset. He finally relented when Mr. White (Hervey Keitel) reminded him that 'waitressing is the no. 1 occupation for female non-graduates in America. It is basically a job any woman can get and made a living on. The reason is because of their tips.'

Garbage disposals... That was my MUST HAVE when I renovated my house. So I have it. You’ll see it being promoted at Home Fairs now. A few new condominiums in KL actually installed them as a perk.
There is garbage disposal machine in Malaysia but expensive and mostly high end property owners install them.( mainly people who have experience such devices overseas. ) It’s suppose to drain into the sewage system and not the drains as in normal drainage water.
Remember in Malaysia when 7E did the RM1 for unlimited slurpee, people literally brought buckets to fill it in. So yeah with free stuff people really go wayyy over and beyond here in Malaysia 😂
When McD did their free refill (I think it was around 2005), my friend would bring home the cup and return back later in the day with that cup asking for a refill. He reused the same cup for days just to get free coke refills.
As an interior designer who had to do product survey, never have I encounter a garbage disposal. I want that in my house. Unfortunately, they don't exists here.

There are some medical (sort-of) ads in Malaysia actually, like Panadol Actifast, Cough syrup, Eno, etc. Meanwhile, I totally feel you about the metric system. In the UK, the majority of the British are still using the imperial system in daily activities, e.g. stones, pound, miles, foot, etc. (Except temperature in Celcius). ^^' I feel like western countries are stricter in checking your ID for security or age when you buy alcohols than in Asian countries (Like Malaysia).

Garbage disposal or Sink Grinders are not commonly installed in Malaysia. But you can still buy and get them installed. My mum had one installed back in 2000. Broke down about 4-5 years later, but we couldn't find the parts to fix it. So now we're back to regular sink.
There are quite number of restaurant that have bottomless/refill for softdrink either selfservice or not. It's not common yet, but yes, we do have some here.

Texas Chicken in Malaysia give a free refill I think. Not like Mcd and other fast food restaurant.

My mom would hang a small plastic bag on top of the sink for us to throw away all leftovers into before putting the dishes into the sink. Then she'll tie it up tightly before throwing it in the garbage bin. That way, the sink won't clog up and the kitchen won't smell of food waste.
You could also use it as composte if you wanna go one step further.

Tipping is not mandatory. Please don't feel you are obligated to tip. Despite what you may have heard, people who work in these positions make minimum wage, set by the local government. Americans are very generous, and individualistic and we loathe to patronize businesses whom don't meet our standards thus why tipping is held as a carrot. It seems European and Asian countries do not emphasize good service and just accept bad service for which they have the pleasure of paying for. Americans are more than willing to pay more for their services, but the operators of these businesses are simply too greedy. Case in-point, now, during the COVID situation, may businesses are closing simply because they cannot find enough workers to fulfill. The solution is simple, raise the wages of the workers and raise the prices of the goods or services! But instead, the operators choose to shut-up shop!
The tips are suppose to give the servants/waiters, but in Malaysia, that 10% service charge will never fly from the pocket of the boss to the hand of those employees...

malaysia dont have a tipping culture is because we actually paid our waiter and waiteress a salary... while waiter and waiteress in america get paid below minium wages and have to survive on tips that they earn to actually make a living.. apparently this is to ensure that the waiter and waiteress provide a good service to the customer.

Have just discovered your videos and am thoroughly enjoying them. Doggy bag. Earlier people were ashamed to say in a restaurant that they would take home and eat the same food for dinner or the next day. So they started saying ‘I’d like to take this home for my dog’. So it was called a Doggy Bag. In the year 2000 when I moved from Malaysia to Sri Lanka my apartment had a garbage disposal. Having traveled extensively in the US I was familiar with it. But being Asian disliked wasting energy to grind food waste which could be dumped in the bin. And I can so totally get the Malaysian food connection. Even now if visit KL first thing in the morning my friends will Tapao kway tew and fried bananas for my breakfast and my absolute favourite is Beef Rendang and Nasi Lemak, though my hubby prefers Kampung Chicken.

I remember in the opening scene of the film 'Reservoir Dogs' (Directed by Quentin Tarantino) when Mr. Pink (Steve Buscemi) refused to tip the waitress, the rest of the robbers were upset. He finally relented when Mr. White (Hervey Keitel) reminded him that 'waitressing is the no. 1 occupation for female non-graduates in America. It is basically a job any woman can get and made a living on. The reason is because of their tips.'

Garbage disposals... That was my MUST HAVE when I renovated my house. So I have it. You’ll see it being promoted at Home Fairs now. A few new condominiums in KL actually installed them as a perk.

There is garbage disposal machine in Malaysia but expensive and mostly high end property owners install them.( mainly people who have experience such devices overseas. ) It’s suppose to drain into the sewage system and not the drains as in normal drainage water.
McDonald's used to have free refill drinks in Malaysia. Now only some fastfood like Texas Chicken has free refill.

When McD did their free refill (I think it was around 2005), my friend would bring home the cup and return back later in the day with that cup asking for a refill. He reused the same cup for days just to get free coke refills.

There are some medical (sort-of) ads in Malaysia actually, like Panadol Actifast, Cough syrup, Eno, etc. Meanwhile, I totally feel you about the metric system. In the UK, the majority of the British are still using the imperial system in daily activities, e.g. stones, pound, miles, foot, etc. (Except temperature in Celcius). ^^' I feel like western countries are stricter in checking your ID for security or age when you buy alcohols than in Asian countries (Like Malaysia).

In India, no compulsory tips (your choice) and no free refills. But recently I've seen some price tags without including the taxes, it's annoying...

Garbage disposal or Sink Grinders are not commonly installed in Malaysia. But you can still buy and get them installed. My mum had one installed back in 2000. Broke down about 4-5 years later, but we couldn't find the parts to fix it. So now we're back to regular sink.
