Bro, I have been trying to find out the name of that wood for months now. I decided to search through the comments to see if anyone mentioned the name and thank God you did. This is the toughest wood I have worked with. This wood had me sharpening my chain saw every few cuts with a small piece I was working with. I used it to make small tiny strips along some exotic wood on a cutting board. Do you know when I was done its like it was gold metal? It is so beautiful, but chipped my breaker several times, cutting it on the table saw. If you need gold trim around anything this works. I am still in disbelief the colour it gives. Black locust, lol. Wish I could show you the board so you could see the gold coloe it gives.
Thanks for the video! Wow! What a lot of work you put into the table! It looks beautiful! I can think of several places where it might work even in my small home. Thanks!
To be honest, my first thought was "oh no... no voiceover...." but I'm really really glad I stayed. This is the most beautiful table I've seen on youtube and I've seen alot so far. I wish I could afford one. I would use any chance to breg with this beauty :D
Black locust by far my favorite wood for many reasons, had to mention that before even watching this video , your work is exceptional so I know this will be to 👌👍😎
I have to pick on the ONLY thing possible for my aesthetics, maybe a little more metal?. This is so sick. I initially thought it was silver or white in the epoxy. I can’t even imagine how you thought this up, but do it again and again. I always like the look of wood, but I’m getting turned into liking the way you did the metal more. It’s hard to stop lauding this.
Nice desk! Here is an idea for a future project. When you cut the pieces to final arrangement use a flush trim for half of the depth and route the edges by certain amount. That will create a fixed border for each pieces yet meeting at bottom. Now fill that with a resin with some shimmering metallic stuff followed by clear. That should look really awesome I think.
I'd buy floating shelves from you, in this technique. Amazing! I have enough tables but I don't have shelf space. I like things silver, black and grey. No browns or yellows.
I have been wanting to do a project like this for a while so it was cool to see your process. The steel is a neat idea but, for myself, doesn't seem like it's worth the work. Still, knowing that the polyethylene will not stick to epoxy is a useful tidbit to know. Thanks for the video.
I wouldn't have had the patience for the metal sawing. I totally would've just used epoxy with silver dye to fill the holes because I'm lazy. 😊 This turned out gorgeous!
Top looking table. I was wondering what you were doing with all the small pieces of HDP. I really like what you did with them to put the pieces of steel into the top. It looked good once finished.
Just found your web site, fantastic both in viewing your works and the way you format your social media posts. Question, how dry are the biscuits that you use when pouring the epoxy? Are they below 10%? Have you encountered problems usually associated with work that is too wet over time? Cheers, Tom
As always I love the precision of the puzzle and the playfulness of your video editing :) In this particular piece I like the light band at the outside of the logs, it gives the edges a nice touch. Also a fan of the addition of the metal. If you could somehow integrate fire (maybe char some of the wood?), air and water you could create a five elements piece!
We have black locust here in Texas. I've probably have cut about 50 cords of it for firewood. It's a pretty wood and makes great firewood. If the black locust trees are close to you, might want to look into getting a honeybee hive. My grandpa has told me that it makes damn good honey. Another tree here is called Osage orange, bodark is another name. It's a pretty wood as well. Downside is, it's heavy.
The black locust is one of my favorite woods. Very hard, durable, and also beautiful. If it's not used more, it's because the trees don't grow very large, and wide boards can't be obtained from them.
@@marmotaworks That is true. The size is one reason why I liked it for firewood. But it does grow fast. I caution people that want to plant it. It spreads fast. You can plant a tree and it'll grow from the roots from the original tree
The Osage orange is pretty but I quit very quickly into my first project as it was going through tool blades faster than anything Iv ever cut. Makes walnut look like butter!!

Do you ever do anything with the bark? As someone who doesnt have the skills or a clue I'd be interested to see how a table made with the bark and resin would look.
Very nice, beautiful project. Love "Oyster" veneering jobs, and hope to try some eventually; epoxy certainly seems a good method. I didn't understand why you didn't just leave the UHMW plastic in; it seemed to look good itself. Did you consider using chunks of WOOD in those gaps before filling with epoxy?
Looks very nice, but how did you end up getting the various pieces of steel to be perfectly flush with the table top? I'd guess as you sanded, the steel pieces were at slightly different levels resulting in you having to pour resin/sand in such a way that the table top is not perfectly flush.
I had these pieces from another project, and they are what gave me the idea to make this table, so I used them. But if I were to do something like this again, I would definitely use aluminum.
You've really taken this idea and run with it. Beautiful, but I liked it better with the HDPE instead of the steel - it had luminosity and depth that the steel lacks. As you've proven before, you are a consummate craftsman and artist.
Did you dry the cookies or check for moisture content? Top looks wonderful and it did not take many tools to create great concept my only thought I would have used a metal that is not subject to oxidation/rust (318 SS, Ti etc.) or blued/coated the steel to stabilize. Ray Stormont

Do you ever do anything with the bark? As someone who doesnt have the skills or a clue I'd be interested to see how a table made with the bark and resin would look.
The bark is very soft, and it would need to be sealed with epoxy. Personally, I don't like sealing tables with epoxy; I prefer the feel of the wood.
How do you keep the bubbles from coming out after you put the resin on the wood?
This is a very dense wood, and the epoxy penetrates very little into it, so hardly any bubbles come out.
Absolutely beautiful job l really admire your work done baby huh 😎😯🥺👍

Beautiful as usual, how long does it typically take to air dry the log for this project?
A log like that, uncut, can take several years to air-dry. It's best to cut it into slices, so it dries much faster.
