Why you procrastinate (and how to stop)

- Full disclosure: I procrastinated from making this video for 3 months.
Why does every boring task on earth become suddenly irresistible as soon as we have something important to do?
In this video I describe a study which highlights just why our brains are actually hardwired to procrastinate, and how we can hijack this system in order to trick ourselves into doing more.
There's two main results here: swallow the frog and optimising our to do lists. Hope it all helps!
The study I reference on the hastening of subgoal completion: www.gwern.net/docs/psychology...

😂😂😂😂😂
Hiii-lariouss!
I was considering this 🤔🤣🤣🤣
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Looking back to my history I can see that my fatal mistakes were to not appreciate the life I was already living and not to focus all my energy on that little challenges we face day by day. There is so much beauty even in our ordinary routines and obligations that aren't appreciated by ourselves and I believe that focus and flow comes with the appreciation, so that everyone would benefit from learning how to appreciate the beauty present in their own lifes.
I would love to watch an video by Elizabeth Phillips telling us about appreciation and the beauty present in the little aspects of our lives and how to consistently find and turn it into an concentration booster life changer for our productivity.
I just saw this comment and I love what you said. I struggle with procrastination, mainly because I focus on my fear and self limiting beliefs around the work. The approach of focusing on appreciating life and not focusing on daily struggles is such good advice. Thank you!
I like how you connect with us with "If you are anything like me".
Because we know there are some words and definitions that could be used, but together with the limitation it creates it also creates a distance.
When you talk like you do you put aside diagnostics and specificities and focus on people knowing themselves and improving.
It reduces stigmas and reach the goal in a very effective and also affective way.
I don’t know what it is I enjoy so much about Liz’s content, I enjoy the book/hobby videos the most. It’s also motivating seeing someone who is so accomplished in their hobbies/life endeavours. More book videos!
Yasss will be doing a few book ones soon!
My favourite act of procrastination is always responding to texts days later too😂Breaking tasks into easier, smaller tasks definitely gets more done. Great video, Liz!
I’ve analysed my own procrastination and am convinced I defer difficult but important tasks to challenge my future self into action. I’m far more motivated to do something that seems more impossible if only to validate my ability to get it done. I therefore embrace procrastination as a part of my creative process.
Dividing hard tasks into smaller pieces is actually a great Idea, I gotta do that right now 😂
finally a video with some different information about procrastination, I feel like every other video on the theme that I've seen about it (and it was a LOT, not proud of that lmao) say the same stuff. thanks so much Lizzy!!
Thank you for sharing this Elizabeth. I have been really struggling to engage in studying for my new job. And this struggle has been going on for a while 🙋🏻♂️🤷🏻♂️. But after watching your video last night, I got up this morning and made the first step (turning on my laptop) the priority. It worked. I'm studying this 'big scary monster' (lol) right now. And now it's not so scary. Thank you 🙏🏻
You nailed it! I clicked on this because I was procrastinating. I am going to stop now, go back to work and come back to your video during a break. 😊
Omg I loved this video, thank you so much!! Obv I know making a to-do list is the best thing one can do to conquer tasks but I still only do it when e.g. I have a day left before a deadline and I HAVE to do it now. But learning about the science behind procrastination has made me not only know the importance but really understand the science behind it. Thank you Elizabeth!!
Same 🤗🤗
Glad you back!
Production quality is through the roof on this one Elizabeth. I’m taking PTYA at the moment so seeing you break all this down on Tuesdays for us noob’s and then see it in action is inspiring. Keep it up!
Ah thank you Marcus!!
This was so smart! Loved how you presented this topic Elizabeth! It will stick with me for sure!
Thank you!!
Thanks Elizabeth! Best 5 minutes I procrastinated learning about procrastination :D
If this isn't me currently procrastinating my studies (with my exams coming up in a day😣) and I'm here on UA-cam watching a bunch of videos 😂😂
Thank you for the tip Liz😊
Never clicked quicker on something !!
Loved the video and your clairvoyance 😂 I was procrastinating on sleeping on time and getting up early later !!
Ah thank you!
absolutely love your videos and great topics with a lot of research!
I'm not procrastinating when I'm watching your videos, Elizabeth :) In my opinion, the first reason for procrastination is when people prefer to do something easy and fun instead of something challenging. They may also be a bit afraid of the difficulty of the task and simply don't know where to start. The second reason is when they haven't had enough free time to enjoy themselves. It's only work all the time. In this case you might end up feeling exhausted. Thus leisure is also important for productivity. As for your videos, they are always helpful. I'm sure, people have told you that many times, nonetheless I'll say it again: You look and sound beautiful!
Nice one! :)
Thank you so very much for this video 💝❤☺ I'm about to start writing my exams this Wednesday but I keep doing exactly what you have just said😢. So thank you once again as I will now start to view it in another perspective 💖💝
GENIUS! Breaking things into smaller pieces has been really helpful for me but you explaining the science behind it in this video has really galvanized me to be more intentional about it! Maybe I'll make it a game: how many tiny tasks can I break this big task up into.
BABY STEPS
This is ridiculously helpful, thank you so much for this
Awh thank you Gemma!
Thank you for sharing your knowledge, this vlog is really great thanks elizabeth😃👍❤
Key point of the video: our brains are optimised for the amount of tasks we have to do, not the overall quantity of work.
Solution: do the hardest / most important tasks first
thank you elizabeth! was a great vidoe and helpful
Thank you very much!!! Best Susi
Love the opening Elizabeth! Sending you lots of Love and Light! Have an awesome day full of Love!

Ayyy!! the OG room and desk.
I procrastinated watching this video for a year and came back today.

Thank you, Liz❤️
❤️
I'll just save this and watch whenever I feel like it
Hey Elizabeth. I don't remember how I first stumbled across your videos but I do find I really enjoy them. Congratulations on your recent pay button...well deserved. I am procrastinating today so this video was quite fitting. I will try some of your suggestions. I have a very unrelated question. I noticed your Mac, laptop and keyboard on these wood stands and I was wondering where you got them. Just setting up my office space and am looking for something very much like those.
Very interesting take.
Path of least resistance - need to use it to our advantage!!
Thank you so much for sharing this usiful Vido.
Thanks ❤️
Tip 1: Study small amounts so you can do it, I like to study 3,5 hours with breaks . That way you are more likely to concentrate full effort the whole time. If 3,5h feels too much you can start with studying only 1,5 hours 😊
If you study like 7 hours (which I have tried I guess once in my whole life), after 2 hours you get nervous and start feel frustrated "Jeez still 5 to go".
Tip 2: Use study with me videos, you can keep track how much you have studied and it helps to study with someone even virtually 😊
So I was watching your video about your second brain in Notion.
You system is based on the principle of linking the contents in such a way so that you know why they resonated with you and come to of use when needed. The fundamental working principle is linking.
Since the system is based on linking, I think obsidian is a better option compared to Notion.
You might came across Obsidian, but if you didn't, definitely check it out. It will increase the power of your second brain at level which Notion can never even dream of.
Oh wow, the bucket of water study! Hilarious but so true. I could totally see myself picking up the bucket that's the closest to seemingly me to get it over with faster. Ha! Cool video.
This thumbnail is STUNNING, you are STUNNING
AWH FAYE STOP
Good stuff✨
I can’t get to work bc I keep watching your videos!
I have an exam tomorrow, and i was procrastinating till now.👀
But now I am going to study. Thanks!
Banger
I am new to your channel and I love your content :)
Yasss another quality content
Awesome
You are beautiful and thank you for the theory with cases and data! X
watching while procrastinating
Saved to watch later😗
Such a good video Elizabeth! Super high quality. I noticed that there are nearly no cuts (while talking) in the video. How did you do that?
The syndicate of my brain is so strong that it only allows me to think, talk with it but never do anything. Everybody is registered to it, even me.
I'm procrastinating Elizabeth!!! :(
If the gods of UA-cam content publishing rates are procrastinating, there’s no hope for us mortals 😭
@@elizabethfilips hahaha 😝 great video btw
called me out not even 10 seconds in i love youu lollll
I always procrastine in my life. I hope I can overcome these problems
Nice video
Watching this while procrastinating
Not procrastinating - your content is amazing.. but yes procrastinating has been a big problem for me
In 8 seconds you just reminded me I was supposed to be working
Away from the subject, you look so beautiful 💕
❤️❤️❤️
Excellent communication skilled and you have gorgeous personality ......
I put off filming my next YT video to watch this! - now do I blame me or you? 😁 Great job 👍
The bucket task is more than 2 tasks. It starts with having to choose a bucket, which simultaneously involves assessing the expectations of the person giving you the task. Many people will gladly do more work if it means meeting the (perceived) expectations of others.
I feel like if I'm doing some study involving heavy things, I might as well lift them and get exercise while I do the study. I'm on team pick the first bucket.
Nice
👌👌👌
okay, that intro hits.
Love to see N hear you beautiful ma'am well wishes all the way from RIYADH SAUDIA ARABIA Always stay blessed and stay connected
Your content is very useful & i found your videos different than other videos on youtube. Can you make a video on how to be good at math??
I'd recommend checking out the topic of executive dysfunction, if you haven't already. My neurodivergent brain is more about executive dysfunctioning than it is about procrastinating 🤷
I like the choreography of the outro :)
Thanks David!
Babita ji , Aapka youtube pr channel bhi h, So talented.
Always your voice has speed more than normal, I will click on caption bottom to understand you clearly 😁
I'll I'll I'll..........
Interesting
I will watch this when i am procrastinating.
Your hair has grown quite lovingly long or maybe its just the curls that make it looks so nice.
I wish you’d make a video on how to take smart notes!!
not me putting this on the „watch later“ list😂😭
🙏🏻👍🏻
Oh my God Eli, you are very pretty ❤️❤️
I am totally not procrastinating on this 40-paged report I need to write by watching this video ;)
So often the “short cuts” are never worth it in the long run.
If we say 'no' we have lost already and saved ourselves from sticking our heads above the skyline and realising that there is clean air for us to breathe.
I will watch this video later, now I want to think of its content. 😁
Adds this video to "watch later" folder
