Why you procrastinate (and how to stop)

  • Full disclosure: I procrastinated from making this video for 3 months.
Why does every boring task on earth become suddenly irresistible as soon as we have something important to do?
In this video I describe a study which highlights just why our brains are actually hardwired to procrastinate, and how we can hijack this system in order to trick ourselves into doing more.
There's two main results here: swallow the frog and optimising our to do lists. Hope it all helps!
The study I reference on the hastening of subgoal completion: www.gwern.net/docs/psychology...
WHO AM I: I'm Elizabeth, a medical student, artist, UA-camr and Podcaster in London. I love to think and talk about life, art, medicine, books and meaning. And also how to find the time to do those things. Looking back to my history I can see that my fatal mistakes were to not appreciate the life I was already living and not to focus all my energy on that little challenges we face day by day. There is so much beauty even in our ordinary routines and obligations that aren't appreciated by ourselves and I believe that focus and flow comes with the appreciation, so that everyone would benefit from learning how to appreciate the beauty present in their own lifes.
I would love to watch an video by Elizabeth Phillips telling us about appreciation and the beauty present in the little aspects of our lives and how to consistently find and turn it into an concentration booster life changer for our productivity.

I just saw this comment and I love what you said. I struggle with procrastination, mainly because I focus on my fear and self limiting beliefs around the work. The approach of focusing on appreciating life and not focusing on daily struggles is such good advice. Thank you!

I like how you connect with us with "If you are anything like me".
Because we know there are some words and definitions that could be used, but together with the limitation it creates it also creates a distance.
When you talk like you do you put aside diagnostics and specificities and focus on people knowing themselves and improving.
It reduces stigmas and reach the goal in a very effective and also affective way.

My favourite act of procrastination is always responding to texts days later too😂Breaking tasks into easier, smaller tasks definitely gets more done. Great video, Liz!

I’ve analysed my own procrastination and am convinced I defer difficult but important tasks to challenge my future self into action. I’m far more motivated to do something that seems more impossible if only to validate my ability to get it done. I therefore embrace procrastination as a part of my creative process.

Thank you for sharing this Elizabeth. I have been really struggling to engage in studying for my new job. And this struggle has been going on for a while 🙋🏻‍♂️🤷🏻‍♂️. But after watching your video last night, I got up this morning and made the first step (turning on my laptop) the priority. It worked. I'm studying this 'big scary monster' (lol) right now. And now it's not so scary. Thank you 🙏🏻

Omg I loved this video, thank you so much!! Obv I know making a to-do list is the best thing one can do to conquer tasks but I still only do it when e.g. I have a day left before a deadline and I HAVE to do it now. But learning about the science behind procrastination has made me not only know the importance but really understand the science behind it. Thank you Elizabeth!!

I'm not procrastinating when I'm watching your videos, Elizabeth :) In my opinion, the first reason for procrastination is when people prefer to do something easy and fun instead of something challenging. They may also be a bit afraid of the difficulty of the task and simply don't know where to start. The second reason is when they haven't had enough free time to enjoy themselves. It's only work all the time. In this case you might end up feeling exhausted. Thus leisure is also important for productivity. As for your videos, they are always helpful. I'm sure, people have told you that many times, nonetheless I'll say it again: You look and sound beautiful!
    Nice one! :)

Key point of the video: our brains are optimised for the amount of tasks we have to do, not the overall quantity of work.
Solution: do the hardest / most important tasks first

Tip 1: Study small amounts so you can do it, I like to study 3,5 hours with breaks . That way you are more likely to concentrate full effort the whole time. If 3,5h feels too much you can start with studying only 1,5 hours 😊
If you study like 7 hours (which I have tried I guess once in my whole life), after 2 hours you get nervous and start feel frustrated "Jeez still 5 to go".
Tip 2: Use study with me videos, you can keep track how much you have studied and it helps to study with someone even virtually 😊

So I was watching your video about your second brain in Notion.
You system is based on the principle of linking the contents in such a way so that you know why they resonated with you and come to of use when needed. The fundamental working principle is linking.
Since the system is based on linking, I think obsidian is a better option compared to Notion.
You might came across Obsidian, but if you didn't, definitely check it out. It will increase the power of your second brain at level which Notion can never even dream of.

The bucket task is more than 2 tasks. It starts with having to choose a bucket, which simultaneously involves assessing the expectations of the person giving you the task. Many people will gladly do more work if it means meeting the (perceived) expectations of others.
