      Hello Paul and thanks a bunch! Glad you like the video and some of the video snippets. :-)
      Yes, this snare is tuned up a bit higher than normal and it's also a snare that I have not used in a while. It's a Pearl Sensitone Brass 14" x 5", love the snare. It just seem like the right fit for this Chili Peppers tune! ;)

    Another very fine job here Jerimy! Nice drumming bro! I've always admired your snare sound. I'm looking for a more cracky-choppy sound similar to this one. My snare drum is a DW Collectors series maple 6x14. Any tips?

    • @LittleDrummerChannel
      @LittleDrummerChannel  6 років тому +2

      Hey Tom thanks so much friend! Man that is a great and versatile snare drum that you have!
      I can suggest a couple approaches and you can see if they help you to reach your desired sound/tone. ;)
      Please do not take any of this information as an insult in any way my friend.
      For all I know you may be an audio engineer. I am just starting from the ground up. ;)
      I have notices that you use Evans heads in your recent videos, they are great.
      Although I am going to recommend a Coated Remo Ambassador for this approach.
      Nothing against Evans heads, this is just what works for me. ;)
      **Products To Consider:
      - Coated Remo Ambassador (tuned to a high tuning) the batter head should be not as tight as the resonate head.
      - Using a 20 strand snare strand with a medium to high tension.
      - A Hazy Remo Resonate side head (tuned quite high) a couple octaves above the batter side.
      - To baffle: try a 2- 3in. piece of masking tape with a little fold or pleat in the middle, you may need two of these pieces since your snare is a 6 inch. This will allow for less baffling than Moon Gel, and allow the snare snappiness to be a bit more pronounced.
      **Micing:
      - Batter side mic: Your last video looks like you have the snare mic in a great place to achieve this desired sound as well. Generally when the mic diaphragm points to the edge of the head you will get a thinner sound with more overtones, and when it is placed more over the edge of the hoop and towards the center of the drum the sound will be a bit deeper and warmer. So having it towards the edge will help reach this desired sound for you. ;)
      - Resonate side mic: I am not sure if you use one, but if you do it will help a great deal. SM57's work great for this. Mic placement about 5 inches beneath the snares. ;)
      Make sure that the polarity is opposite from the batter side, this is easily overlooked at times, and will make a huge difference if it is not done at all time when double micing a snare. ;)
      **Mic EQ Suggestions:
      Batter side mic:
      12 kHz high shelf boost +4db
      500 - 600 Hz mid-cut at -4 to -5db
      80 Hz low shelf boost +3db (see that there is a high pass filter engaged too before adding the low shelf boost)
      Resonate side mic:
      12 kHz high shelf boost +4db
      500 - 600 Hz mid-cut at -4 to -5db
      80 Hz low shelf cut -12db (see that there is a high pass filter engaged too)
      **Helpful Tip**
      I would suggest that after you make any big EQ adjustments to any of your mics, make sure and check the input level. Sometimes after making these types of EQ adjustments can boost the input level on your channel depending on what type of mixer or audio interface you use. Just a good rule of thumb. We always want to be as close to "0" or unity gain as possible to have a low signal to noise floor ratio. ;)
      **Additional considerations**
      If you have an extra consider or dynamic mic try putting one up as a room mic at about 15 to 25 feet away and raise it to about 7 ft. high (if possible) and point it in the general direction of the snare drum on your kit. The higher in the air the room mic is the less low frequency and the thinner the sound. The lower the room mic is to the floor the more lower frequencies will be captured.
      This room mic track should be mixed in or blended in additionally and as needed to the rest of your drum tracks. It like adding your own room effect to your kit...I think that you will like it. ;)
      I would advise also putting a lot of reverb on it. Perhaps a nice hall or room effect reverb. When this room mic is mixed in appropriately to you taste, with your other drum tracks, you will notice the snare and other aspects of your kit open up a bit. ;)
      Also, play with the reverb blend amount a bit. You may find that the room mic sounds better with a ton of reverb on it and just mixed in a little bit to the rest of the kit. Or you may like it with a little less reverb and mixed in a little more with the rest of the drum tracks. You will just have to experiment a bit to reach your liking. ;)
      **Room Mic EQ Suggestions:
      12 kHz high shelf boost +2db
      5kHz mid-cut at -4 to -5db
      250Hz low shelf cut -12db (see that there is a high pass filter engaged too)
      I hope this information will be helpful for you in some way Tom.
      Please let me know how it works out or if you have any other questions...contact me anytime!! ;)
      All the best to you and yours and may God continue to Bless you and your family!!
      Jerimy at Little Drummer Channel

      Thank you so much my friend, I appreciate your input a ton! Sorry about not replying sooner, but I was at work and it was quitting time on Wednesday and yesterday I was absolutely swamped (I do most of the UA-cam stuff at work). You mentioned for all you know I might be an audio engineer... No, but it seems like I'm becoming one in a hurry. I don't know if you have done much shopping for drum kits or accessories in the past but I owned and operated Drum Central Superstore brick and mortar and Drum Central Superstore Online for many years. We were the 4th largest drum shop in the U.S. with 10,000 square feet of retail space and 100 drum kits set up in playing position (Ludwig, Pearl, Tama, Yamaha, DW etc.) While I did very well with it, I also operated two other more successful businesses so about 8 years ago I shut it down to focus on those (also I was just working too much). The irony of it was that my personal drum kits were on the floor but never had the time to play because of running the businesses. Because now I have more time, 2-1/2 years ago I got back into drumming and this was not like riding a bicycle. I had to relearn everything and to this point I feel like I'm just a shadow of my former drumming self, but gaining on it every day praise the Lord! Again thank you so much for the information my friend, I can do a lot eliminations from that and there are definitely things I'm going to try... To focus it down a bit more, we have the snare drum sounding great to our ears, I say "we" because my team here that I employ are from Drum Central Superstore and are experienced drummers. We had already removed the moon gels and retuned the snare drum for this new crackier sound that I'm testing for a song I'm working on and you verified that we were on the right track for sure. Now to get it to sound that way in the DAW (Reaper). Also I'm using a Behringer XR18 audio interface, Audix mics: i5 on snare drum, D2 on 12 tom, D2 on 14 tom, D4 on 16 tom, D4 on 18 tom, D6 on each bass drum, scx-one-hc (hyper cardioid) on main hi hats, scx-one-hc on remote hi hats, scx-one-hc on ride cymbal, scx-one-hc for both the 19 china and 10 splash, scx-one-hc for both the 16 crash and 6 piggy back, scx-one-hc for both the 17 crash and 8 piggy back, scx-one-c (cardioid) for the 3-splash cluster. So according to the great info you sent, it looks like the answer may lie in adding a bottom snare mic as well as placement, then we will look at EQ in the specific bands and frequencies that you outlined. Thank you so much Jerimy undoubtedly I will talking to you again soon… God bless!

    Hey Jerimy I do have a question about your kit configuration. Are you using your 12inch Tom as your first floortom?😎

    • @LittleDrummerChannel
      @LittleDrummerChannel  6 років тому +2

      Hello Rob and that is a great question! Yes, we are. It was an idea that I had a long time ago to get two rack toms up and still have good spacing for where I like the ride to be positioned. It is tuned pretty low more like a floor tom. We are using a 10, 12 and 14 tom configuration. Here's a little secret you can try sometime to get more extended low-end out of your toms and smooth sound. Try using Remo Ambassador coated heads for your resonate heads sometime. We generally use Remo Emperor coated on the batter side. ;)
      Thanks for the great question Rob!

    • @biekanez1
      @biekanez1 6 років тому +1

      Thank you for you answer my friend. I wanna buy a Mapex Saturn to a Deep Water Maple Burl. But they are not cheap and a 5 piece configuration and adjust it like you did, one up 2 down. That is less expensive. But I wanna change this kit into an hybride e-kit. As you maybe know I'm an e-drummer. For me it isn't possible to have an acoustic kit, it's to much noise for the neighbours. :-( But I use Superior Drummer 3 and those drumsamples are awesome. But I must admid your sound is better, far better :-)

    • @LittleDrummerChannel
      @LittleDrummerChannel  6 років тому +2

      You are very welcome Rob! That sounds like an exciting idea to try out! I understand what you mean about having to monitor your noise level to keep peace and harmony with the community. I lived in an apartment for a while in my younger years and could only work on rudiments and play along with tracks on a practice pad. Unfortunately the e-kits were not as advanced at that time or perhaps I may have went that route too. ;)
      Wow...man thanks for the glowing comment about our sound! That is really humbling to hear. I put a lot of time in the recording, mixing and mastering process to hopefully share something nice with everyone...you made my day bro!!
      Keep us posted on your hybrid project and how it goes, we would love to hear it in action when the time is right!
      All the best Rob!!
