Some peaple consider this album to be the worst one out of Tom Waits discography. I can`t tell, but what I know is it deserves a credit just for this particular song. One of my Waits TOP 5 for sure.
I only recently discovered this music after hearing it play through the credits of the movie A Most Wanted Man. I had a visceral reaction and had to find more!
I think this is one of the best albums of all time. I first listened to it walking home from work one morning and it was so compelling I kept walking until I listened to it all. This and "She's Dead And Lovely" are masterpieces...also "Don't Go Into That Barn"....the LYRICS are brilliant poetry.
I don't believe in people that believe that this is the worst Waits album in his discography. Those people and a 'worst' Tom Waits album, are things that can't possibly be real. Waits doesn't make music so that it can be compared to the other music he's done. He just makes music the way he and Kathleen Brennan prefer it.
There are some days that this track is on a loop for hours. Looking for another TW song w/ a similar feel, can't remember the name or which album. Kinda pirate-y but with a big 'HEY!' between verses. Ring a bell for anyone?
Marc Ribot’s solo is magnificent
"Open fire when you hit the shore/
all is fair in love and war."
That's a groovy lyric man-

If I was a pirate during the golden age of piracy, I would totally make my crew sing this.
YARRRRR Matey

This took some time to grow on me and it's lovingly stuck to me for life munch like about 300 others did .
This man is a genius!
that solo man...

This says to me "Do the job in front of you"
Mark Ribot's guitar solo
The best PUNK song ever!

Discordant. Beautiful. I fucking love this song.
No this song is just a total trip in that way. Unlike any other song ever recorded imho.
Total agreement. And I can never hit the strings hard enough.
Bir taş ağlasaydı böyle ağlardı eminim.
!
Les Claypool !!!!
E-Dubble made a hip hop song of the same name with the same tune. It's awesome too :)
It is probably his oddest album for the utter absence of piano (there's an optigan on one track, I think).
it's a prequel with a coda for Dylan's _Señor (Tales of Yankee Power)_
great song. reminds me of man of mystery a little bit
Tom Waits definitely sounds operatic in this one.
Jil,deze is voor jou ouwe piraat! r.i.p
I came here because i looked for the E-Dubble version and found this and, well, i guess you could say i was curious when i clicked it.
Odd song, I like it.
I NEED to play this on guitar, but I can't figure the damn thing out other than Amin, Dmin, Emin, Amin...
help?
U ever figure it?
This song brings to my red white and blue blood the American flag being hoisted about 250 years ago
Who disliks this?
the audio is off.
