  • This video is designed to give a basic understanding of the reversing exercise for the official LGV - HGV driving test.
For a lot of people reversing a trailer for the first time is a challenge. Getting that trailer to do what you want takes some practice. This video gives you a heads up on what it is all about, but don't worry as your instructor will show you how to do it.

I passed C+E 20-odd years ago but couldn't reverse to save my life after - I was forever taking a dozen shunts to get onto a bay.
Then I fell out with my boss because he kept switching me between rigids and artics - my mind doesn't work that way - so threw myself on the mercy of the agencies, who found me a job as a shunter in a ratty old Atkinson tractor. Spent 6 months shunting trailers into the warehouse, onto bays and having to park VERY close in the trailer park. Sharpened my reversing up no end . . .
Actually, I discovered while I was shunting that the cause of my early problems was not giving myself enough room to get the trailer straightened up before I got onto a bay, or whatever. My Class 1 instructor gave me what I consider the best bit of advice I ever had - if you can see too much trailer in the mirrors one side or the other, steer towards it and it'll straighten you up . . .
    Retired now - thank god . . . 😉

Afte reversing artics and wagon and drags with dolly's for about 13,000 times, I can honestly say I've never had to reverse once the way it is in the test reversing Manouvre and that's going some.

By far this video is the most helpful from all round especially in the cab

You spit the trailer round on a sixpence, of course it goes out. Rgds Colin

As I work as a C+E shunter driver, this exercise should not be a problem when it comes.

2:26 Are you aloud to cross your arms and steer one handed on your test?

The training school I was with said, "do not cross your hands when steering" and "you are allowed to touch the barrier at the back of the garage, but you must pull forward before getting out to check"

Hmmm! OK fair enough. However we have (for a long time) been teaching reversing where students CAN cross there arms. No issues from us or the examiner. Also. yes you can touch the barrier but this is not how it should be done. A competent driver should be able to reverse and control the vehicle without touching the barrier.

prm414 - you can cross your hands when steering, as long as full control is maintained. If you’re crossing your hands like a madman then you’ll get a fail on your test.

    Can I just ask.
I failed my Class 1 Reversing exercise today. When you put on your full right hand lock, when the marker on your head of trailer appears, do you immediately engage a steer to the left to straighten up and become parallel with the line? This is all I have seen via youtube.
I failed because I have been told the following "Full Right hand lock until marker appears on bulk-head of trailer. Keep the marker where it us until the back left side of the trailer looks as though it's touching the far left cone". This is what I tried to do on test, and my cab (right hand wheels) were on the right hand line (kerb) way before I could turn left as I was trying to get my trailer to look as though it's touching the cone.
Everywhere I've looked online, no where does it say to keep the marker where it is while moving, everywhere seems to say as soon as you see the marker, start steering to the left to until your cab wheels are parallel with the line and keep moving parallel until your whole vehicle is in a straight line.
Have I been misinformed in the way I've been told to do this? Does it matter if my rear-left of trailer doesn't look as though it's touching the front left cone of the "Garage"? What is the most important point with the marker? Should I keep it where it is while I move back, or just steer left as soon as it appears?
I don't want to fail again so all help is appreciated!

Only if you need to go forward and back again I believe. Or if you get out and need to go back some more.

As daft as it sounds, are there many differences in this test compared to the B+E (excluding the obvious one being size). E.g. Theory test is much stricter
