This was such a great tip! Thank you. It was a gorgeous day for an afternoon ride on the ferry. We went from Pier 11 at Wall Street all the way up to Throg’s Neck as you suggested. That took about an hour. Then we got off and got right back on to come back halfway and got off at the 90 Street Pier stop. I was glad there was a very helpful staffer at the Pier 11 ticket machine who helped us know we just needed 4 tickets for the 2 of us to go both directions. So we spent a total $16 to have a beautiful tour of the East River. Really great views. So relaxing!!

In NYC right now, took it yesterday to Roosevelt Island. Today took the tram back to Manhattan. Only thing I didn't like was the ferry running behind schedule. Took it from 34th.
I took the Circle Line instead, and I think it was worth every penny I spent. The ride all around Manhattan was amazing, and the tour guide/narrator did a fabulous job explaining what we were looking at. That said, if I go back to NYC, I may well have a ride on one or more these ferries.
Is a city transportation, you don’t have to book it, you can download the NYC Ferry app to see the routes and schedules, I think you can get the tickets at the app too or there are machines at the stops to get them.
The late ferry from Far Rockaway is perfect. You get to see the sunset at the Verrazano Bridge and by the time you hit Manhattan it’s dark enough to see all the lights.
Last year in the heat and humidity of August I took the ferry to the Rockaways. It was a lifesaver. It was also only $2.75 then. It was so nice being on the water, I also did the Circle Line around the island. It was $40. I'll have to try the Throgs Neck route you mentioned.

This is a Copenhagen hack as well, pay 20 bucks to do a canal tour with 100s of tourists and someone yapping all the way or get a 4$ bus ticket and go on the city boat bus and get on and off when you feel like it and see all the sites as you wish! Nice hack!
I would like to do a boat ride in NY but I find tall buildings hard to look at which I prefer to go boat riding inside the boat instead of being on top of the boat

Secret? The NYC Ferry worked well until deBlasio fucked it up. Now its so crowded, a lot of the time it pulls into the slip and leaves again without picking up any passengers because the boat is at capacity. So then you can wait for half an hour for another one, all the while hoping there's room for you to get on. And if there isnt, you can walk to the subway, which in some neighborhoods is the better part of a mile away. And by the way, it might be a great deal for tourists, but it absolutely sucks for actual New Yorkers. Why? From the Citizen's Budget Commission report:
"In fiscal year 2021, the most recent year for which data is available, the average per-trip subsidy for NYC Ferry was at least $9.85, including both payments to the private operator and EDC's internal costs." So your $4 boat ride actually costs $13.85, with NYC taxpayers subsidizing your cheap ride. Maybe say "Thank you!" ya leeches?

Going to New York 🗽 on a budget or not, $4 boat around the city is the best deal ever. I’m planning my 1st time trip to New York.

Take the SIF from the Whitehall to St George's. Its 100% free and gives you a nice view of the Statue of liberty
