The second experiment reminded me of when I was admitted to a mental hospital as an emergency case. On my discharge papers they got my name wrong (not just the spelling it was a different name in some sentences), my height (which combined with my actual weight made me anorexic), wrote I had a drinking problem because I drank on some friday nights, diagnosed me with selective mutism (it's actually social anxiety but hey close enough right), ...
Btw when I talked to a therapist who actually bothered to listen to me I got diagnosed with depression, borderline personality disorder, bulimia and social anxiety. The hospital got none of those right.

To be fair, BPD (I am diagnosed with it as well) can be misdiagnosed as various things depending on what you’re putting on at the time (not sure if I am phrasing that right...) some of my BPD symptoms are emulating other people’s personalities and constantly changing my personality, so sometimes I’d have very different mental symptoms and would change on a dime from having severe anxiety to not at all, having hyperfixations or not, etc. I’m a lot better now

the second study is my faaaaaavourite from psych class! i think its important to emphasize that it was done to highlight pathologising normal human quirks and seeing the illness rather than a multifaceted human being.
the best part was when doctors were outraged by the study cuz they felt tricked so the researchers were like "k we'll do it again, this time you have a warning that we're sending test subjects ok?" and the doctors found hundreds of fake patients but in reality, the researchers never sent any more subjects and the fake patients were all regular misdiagnosed people

ywoy I thought it was so interesting that even though they were sent no pseudo patients the hospitals identified 42 as pseudo patients confidently, and suspected another 42 (I learned about it in my psych class this year)

Reminded me of this one time in middle school when we had a substitute bus driver that obviously didn't know the route. It was in the morning and we were on our way to school, and obviously we decided to take the opportunity to skip some classes and gave her the wrong directions. She got more and more lost, and the bus was very close to capacity, so it started to stress her out a lot. We noticed it, (she was running her hands through her hair, scratching her neck, constantly leaning over the wheel or adjusting her sunglasses, etc.) and I think someone even went so far as to mention that she was getting nervous. We cheered it on and started working together to make things harder for her. She got confused again at a very fast moving intersection where she didn't have a lot of time to consider all the options, and we talked with each other and decided to give the right direction knowing she would turn the opposite way. She did exactly that and noticed so when we cheered over it. I think she eventually radioed for directions and we got to school around the end of second period. I sill feel really bad about and think about it sometimes, but overall, middle schoolers really are evil huh.

Almost 2 years late to the party, but I'd like to add, as someone that stutters: stuttering isn't something you're necessarily born with. For a lot of people it is, but there are other reasons why someone can acquire a stutter, including a brain injury, certain medications, or severe psychological stress. It's just that for that last type, the psychological aspect isn't surrounding idea of stuttering, it's more that it'll be a manifestation of something separate going on psychologically, often some type of major trauma.

hearing the stuttering controversy was so strange to me haha. I went to speech therapy for years bc of my stutter and I would be annoyed if some guy was trying to tell me it was a psychological thing. Anyone who has a stutter knows that it's such a distinct physical feeling when you stutter- like the word/syllable is a tangible object stuck back of your throat- it's so strange.

I also wonder if the people experimenting didn't realize how controversial it was what they were doing, or if they just didn't care? The "basic facial expressions" that are nowadays widely accepted to portray certain emotions aren't actually universal - there are differences from person to person and between cultures. This entails some issues when this is applied in situations like court or job interviews.

There was a guy who claimed to be insane to avoid criminal punishment (even though it was a small crime) he claimed to have universally know symptoms (hearing voices, “wanting to see women die” etc) eventually he tried to tell them that he had lied, and he wasn’t insane, but it was written off as him being a psychopath (manipulative, lying etc) eventually he had served more time in the hospital than he would have in prison. The journalist who spoke to him researched mental illnesses and saw how they can be put onto anyone no matter how sane. He even spoke to “sane” people and saw “symptoms” It was a tedtalk called “strange answers to the psychopath test”
