    Ive tried a few different systems. Kasa gets it on 3 levels. 1: cost effective, 2 : ease of use with reliable app that works, multiple devices for different needs such as a full array of switch variations and even basic switched "plug in " type outlet .

    Just went through several ES20M switches - NO MOTION DETECTION! If your motion detection isn't working follow these steps: 1. Remove the device from your Kasa app, 2. hold down the reset button found on the front bottom of the switch for about 10 seconds to reset the switch, and then 3. re-add the switch to the Kasa app and motion should now work. Did this multiple times today after talking to TP-Link support.

    Thanks for your timely review! We're remodeling a bathroom, so I'll be getting this switch to control the vanity lights. One Kasa feature you didn't highlight: If you want, the app will lead you step-by-step through the installation process. I bought a Kasa smart dimmer switch. I had never done any wiring and was uncertain (neutral wire? whazzat?) but I decided to try the app's "Wiring for Dummies" feature. It really is idiot-proof. I bought a $10 voltage detector as they recommended, and installation was easy. Now I can use Alexa to control the sconces by my bed without walking across the room to the switch.

    Great review, Bret! I was actually thinking about getting this, so your review was very helpful. I know you said Smartthings doesn't recognize the motion sensor but does Alexa? I'm wondering if there's a way to create a routine that when I say "Alexa, it's shower time" it will change the auto off timer to either off or increase the time.

    Motion switches have been around a long time for turning a light on and off. Remember those annoying floodlights outside that use to get stuck on during the day :)
    The thing smart devices can do is have different schedules, so if you get up in the middle of the night, the light can come on dim and not blind everyone, can be bright during the day when you need extra light and if it has a humidity sensor can turn on the fan.
    That's when things just start getting smart. Anything less is just a glorified remote control.

    Could I use the motion sensor to activate a smart light other than the built-in dimmer?
    I want to install it on my bedroom and hopefully create the following routine:
    - During the day, if the motion-sensor picks up any movement it will turn on the bedroom lights.
    - Between 23h and 6h I want the motion sensor to turn on the hallway lights outside my bedroom, just in case me or my wife have to get up at night.

    Nice thorough, quick review of Kasa motion sensor. (Subscribed!) I see Kasa is sold with a thicker (or deep) cover plate and you replaced it with a double plate that is deep. Could you have used a standard double cover plate? Minor item is given the flexibility of the system but I'd prefer consistency in cover plates.

    • @TechWithBrett
      @TechWithBrett  2 роки тому

      That's a good question. Are you doing this with a similar fan or a ceiling fan? I haven't tried linking separate light circuits to one switch so I'm not sure how that operates. If you are trying it with a light/ceiling fan combo you might run into some issues with the dimmer. There is a model without dimming that might work better.

    • @atlantarealestatehub9305
      @atlantarealestatehub9305 2 роки тому

      @@TechWithBrett I was thinking that you have yours installed in the bathroom and you most likely have an exhaust fan switch in the same gang plate. Since the exhaust fan is not a variable switch, I wonder what would happen if you just put it in the same load line with the light. Theoretically when the light comes on from the motion detector, then the exhaust fan would go on too.

    • @davidlei6930
      @davidlei6930 Рік тому

      The KS200M can control the fan switch, but the dimmer switch (KS220M/ES20M) cannot control the fan. The dimmer uses a triac and is most likely not compatible with the fan.

    I am using a TP-link Motion activated dimmer switch KS220M, ES20M in my bathroom. I would like to set up a routine using my Alexa Voice activation to communicate through the switch using the word “shower”. What I would like the routine to do is when I am ready to take a shower, I would like for the light to stay on for at least 15 minutes or longer.
    When I'm in the shower the light keeps going out after one minute, and I must constantly wave my hands to trigger the motion detector to get the light to turn back on while I am in the shower.

      no but there is a work around... If your switch wire has a ground wire with it you can in fact tag off to the ground with the neutral and if the ground is truly grounded back to panel it will work just fine. Not recommended of course but will in fact work in a pinch. The good thing is that the smart switch uses very little power to operate so theres really no threat .WOULDNT RECOMMEND on an average install but if theres no other option it will in fact work reliably.

      Samsung has discontinued their SmartThings hub. Although, the Aeotec Hub is essentially the same product. It is able to connect with zigbee and zwave devices, and use the SmartThings app. I have been using it for two months and I love the reliability, and the ability to work with different devices like the ikea tradfri button which is very cheap. The smartthings app is also very easy to use, and you are able to add wifi compatible devices with it if you already have a few to create automations completely in the app. Also, it works with google and Alexa, so whatever devices you add, you can control via Alexa or Google Assistant. Overall, I think it is a great hub.

    We are all sinners in need of a savior. You may reject it but it's the truth, God exists, our consience proves it. Jesus Christ suffered in your place for your sins so that you could be forgiven and have everlasting life. You can only obtain everlasting life if you put all your trust in the only one that can save you. You have free will so if you wake up in hell one day, don't blame God. Repent from your unbelief and trust in Jesus Christ as your lord and savior.

    For some reason I can't manual power it off by doing a long press on the physical switch (override the timeout when using motion) Anyone have this issue and if so how did you solve for it?
