    My 2 fav pianists on this piece are Sunwook Kim and Richard Goode. Sunwook plays with beautiful clarity and Goode plays soulfully.

      Sokolov and Lang Lang (!) are my favorites. UA-cam has the Sokolov Gigue, but that video describes the Chinese UA-cam with the whole piece. TwoSetViolin originally recommended the Sokolov Gigue, which is how it ended up in my recommendations. This one is very nice also; I am being distracted from what I am writing :-).

      I agree about the tempo for the allemande. I think there's poignancy, pathos in this music, and it simply can't emerge at a fast tempo. Yet there have been several very fine musicians who obviously disagree with me. For example, imho it's one of Scott Ross's extremely rare misjudgments.

    • @exoticfitnessapparel4353

      @@gfweis too many tried to start using this as a showpiece after Gould, but the allemande is a moderately paced dance. One the other hand, the Italian courrente and giga should haul ass.

    Sunwook's interpretation is based on his visceral emotions. He lacks imagination and a sense of form. He likes to emote--even if for a little bit---but Bach is very refrained and not wont to emote. Baroque period addresses form and architecture while the Romantic Period focuses on emotion. Sunwook Kim should listen to Glenn Gould and Rosalyn Tureck's playing, even David Fray. Those pianists have a great sense of form, architecture, accenting, tone production, and especially, imagination.

      @@chrrev1 no, but there are authoritative treatises from the period like from Francois Couperin that indicate the style, interpretation and ornamentation.

    • @exoticfitnessapparel4353
      @exoticfitnessapparel4353 Рік тому +1

      While you have a few things right it is a completely false narrative to say baroque period lacks emotion - it may lack some of the human range of it compared to the romantic but it’s loaded with tension, resolve and high heavenly climaxes. In this case, he plays the sarabande FAR too robotically and it lacks the expression and emotion for that reason. In the baroque period, you basically rarely play left and right hand notes totally together. As indicated by the treatises they are meant to be rolled and broken. This becomes more pronounced with a slow tempo (like in the sarabande). To simply play this with no rocking/rolling rubato at all and all the notes precisely together is COMPLETELY WRONG stylistically and it’s this over-attention to “architecture” that leaves it completely devoid of all the divine expressive emotions it should contain!!

    He did some good things and I was comfortable listening to it. But the sarabande is way off in style and interpretation. He’s not even breaking and rolling left/right hand chords and was very robotic and lacking articulation, ingenuity or expression. The sarabande was completely foul.
