My coworker, when she opened up the little fabric shop I worked at every morning some years ago, would always insist on greeting the store and singing a little tune to make the spirits within happy. How much joy must a book store have watching readers peruse, gush, cry, get upset, and swoon over their paper children?

Yes, 👍 totally agree!!! ❤🎉😊 there are so many categorical themes of poetry books 📚 out there, that don’t get the attention they deserve. But this book store caught my attention when as well on poetry. So beautiful to actually hear the store owner talk about the attention she gives to the poets.
I wish I could have gone with you to these shops! I spotted so many good ones I've read, both in general and of the staff recos, and I would have tried hard not to overwhelm you with all the books I'd press into your hands. I too love to ask staff I've never met for their recommendations. I love being surprised by books I wouldn't have picked up on my own. Ah, if I could have any business, it would be a bookstore! I've worked at several, but also at libraries, and I'm a copyeditor. Books have been my life and passion for over 45 years. What a fun video and I love that you're discovering more new shops!

This is such a wonderful video Morgan! Thank you! I love seeing Portland, my mom was Rose Festival Queen back in 1959 (Ruth Parrett) and grew up there, so it’s especially fun for me to see the area. I was too little to remember the brief time I lived there myself. Need to come for another visit soon! I read The Midnight Library, possibly from your recommendation, and loved it! I enjoyed your visits and interviews with the local bookstores so much! 🍂🍄💕

Morgan, this was so much fun! I work in Milwaukie and have been to Spoke n Word a couple times. This may be their second season and like many new stores they have struggled. Shop local!! and keep these gems open. This tour video reminded me of your travels to all the pop up free book libraries in town. I loved that video and the evening mood you two enjoyed together. Hey Mo! Just a little note that the name of the author of Hyunam-Dong Bookshop is pronounced Hwang Boh-r-uhm rather than ree-um; the "eu" in Korean is pronounced like the English word "eugh" without the vocalisation of the /gh/ at the end - I don't think I can link it here, but if you search "Author Talks: Hwang Bo-reum" in UA-cam a video from the Korea Society should come up, which will give you an idea of how it sounds :) I really recommend watching it all the way through - there are English subs - as it gives a really interesting insight into the ideas and process that went into the book :).

Oh man, I loved this video and style! Must be so hard to repeat and find more and more bookstores. Could you imagine traveling to towns to do more of this? Maybe even Japan, down that street of bookstores! That would be final boss mode, lol
This was such a fun video. Thank you for taking us along with you. I absolutely love small independent book shops. Sadly, we don’t have any at all in our area. I’ve searched far and wide. We do have 2 Barnes and Noble’s within 20 minutes of us at least. The new CEO is trying to slowly turn them back into smaller shops with more curated books for that particular area. He wants them to feel more like independent book stores. Anyway, we’re moving to a small town within the next few years (not sure where yet or which state), but one of the top things on my list is that the town MUST have a small bookstore. Luckily, my husband is fully onboard with this because he knows how much I enjoy reading and cozy book shops. Have a wonderful Autumn weekend🍂🍁🧡

This was so much fun Morgan! I love exploring new bookshops and it was so brave of you to ask to film and interview staff for book recommendations. I admit I am a sucker for a inventive window display and Annie Blooms was wonderful. I would have been tempted to get "Pumpkin Spice and Everything Nice" from the Pumpkin Patch display or the "BIG Flavor Vegan" cookbook. I definitely want to read "Days Of The Morisaki Bookshop". When you saw the Children's Storytime sign outside it gave me immediate Kathleen Kelly (You've Got Mail) vibes. I also love when indie bookshops have a cozy reading corner and those big comfy high back chairs. The Spoke and Word looked like a very cozy bookshop. Loved the blue exterior and how they had the Halloween themed books set up along with candles, cards, stickers and washi tape. Lastly I liked how Up Up Books had such a wonderful poetry section and really promoted local Portland writers. The folded book hanging decorations were wonderful as well as the children's section with the arched doorway and lovely wallpaper and moss hanging from the ceiling. Magical. I would love if you decide to do this again as we have so many wonderful indie bookshops and used bookstores to explore here in Portland and nearby areas. I recently read Samanta Schweblin‘s Mouthful of Birds. I loved it. The stories in it were creepy (not scary) which I liked, and in the stories there were like, how can I say, all of a sudden something very normal thing becomes abnornal. 😬 It had lots of plot twists. And then I immediatlely bought her other book which is called Seven Empty Houses. Now I’m reading this one. This one is also short storied collection like the other one.
Did you ever read Samanta Schweblin? If not, I highly recommend you to check her books.
