서울새남굿은 무속의 기본적 속성인 조상 신앙에 의존하는 동시에, 조상으로 새롭게 천도되어야 하는 죽은 사람의 넋을 기원한다. 본 개막 행사는 전시의 시작을 축원하고 과거 재판소와 대법원으로 사용되었던 미술관 건물의 역사에 얽힌 애환을 씻는데 의미가 있다. 이와 함께 세월호 참사 등 당시 국내에서 벌어진 여러 불운한 사고들로 인해 안타깝게 목숨을 잃은 영혼들을 천도하는 마음으로 치러졌다.

Seoul Sae-nam Gut follows the religious belief of worshiping ancestors, which is the basic shamanistic idea. The ritual of the opening performance is to celebrate the commencement of the exhibition and to cleanse any history of agony or tragedy left behind at the site of Seoul Museum of Art, originally used by the Court of Justice and the Supreme Court. At the same time, it is to console the poor souls who have lost their lives due to recent tragic accidents in Korea and to wish for the country to find its stable ground and for the people to regain peace.
