Welcome to St. John in the US Virgin Islands! The beautiful island is known for its stunning beaches, scenic hiking trails, and the remnants of sugar mills from the former Danish West Indies.
Amongst the sugar mill ruins spread throughout the island, Annaberg Sugar Plantation is the most impressive. The ruins are beautifully intact - providing insight into the economics, way of life, and most importantly, the dark history of the African Slave Trade present throughout the Caribbean.
Almost all of the buildings were constructed by slave labor including the largest windmill on the island, the horse mill, sugar factory, and living quarters. It's a remarkable feat that many of them still stand today despite the annual battering from forceful hurricanes. It speaks to the incredible design and resilience of those who constructed the buildings.
As for your visit, you might spend upwards of an hour exploring the impressive ruins. You'll park in a concrete lot down the hill before following a wooden staircase to the entrance. Restroom facilities are available.
Other things to do in the area are hiking up to the Annaberg Schoolhouse or along Leinster Bay Trail which leads to Waterlemon Cay (fantastic snorkeling) or the Murphy House on the Johnny Horn Trail. No matter where you go, you're sure to encounter fascinating ruins, stunning views of the BVIs and surrounding islets, or beautiful underwater scenery.
