      @biggadon. I was dating a man from st. Thomas. And he was moving really fast with me. I’m from the states (Georgia). It’s like he wanted a relationship first before being friends. Is it in yall culture to move fast like that?
      Also 4 months into it his mom died. Now we don’t even speak anymore and we work at the same place. I’ve reached out to him and he’s not as engaging except when he called to tell me happy birthday. Is that how y’all culture rock??? Man!

    St John is my Go to for sure. after 20 +
    years visiting both, I have to say St John is my first choice! Though
    for the first time in over 20 years going on a fishing trip that led me back to St john I must say the people at the Swashbuckling Tours were extremely welcoming and make me want to visit and maybe Stay on St Thomas again the next time. Love the vibes and the people on that side of St Thomas!

    24 year resident ov the USVI, my simple recommendation is to go to BOTH islands. You can split into two different stays (i.e.. nights on one island, 4 on the other) or base yourself on one and visit the other for day trips. The people ferry (as opposed to car ferry) travels from Red Hook on the east end of St. Thomas to/from St. John every hour from early morning to late evening, so if staying on St. Thomas, you can go spend a nice day on St. John, hitting a beautiful beach via a short taxi or even a 30 minute walk to Honeymoon or Solomon Beach from Cruz Bay, then have dinner at any one of several good restaurants in Love City (aka Cruz Bay) and then return on an evening ferry to Red Hook for an extended bar hop or just back to your hotel. Taking a rental car to St. John via the ferry is less than ideal IMHO as it is expensive, parking in Cruz Bay is limited and you have to return much earlier than the people ferry. Cheers!

    We have stayed on St. Thomas twice now. We really wanted to stay on St. John on our next trip but we would hate to lose the day we arrive and depart due to needing the car ferry & being at the airport with enough time. But we LOVE St. John. The beaches, Windmill Bar, Woody's, Cruz Bay. There's still a lot we haven't seen and can't wait to come back.

    Stt has some of the best spots for just chilling or partying. Stj is way more laid back and relaxed, as somebody who has lived on both after moving here 9 years ago on a whim i reccomend stt, just try to make friends with a local and see the spots past havensight, you will have so much more fun on a local beach like neltjeberg or stumpy than a tourist trap like magens or emerald.

    Any suggestions one where to stay on St. John? And do you fly into St. Thomas and take a ferry to St. John if staying there? Is it worth renting a car or utilizing public transit/uber?

    • @TheDetourDuo
      @TheDetourDuo  18 днів тому +1

      We stayed on St Thomas so I can't honestly answer that first question, but for your other questions. You fly into St Thomas and take the ferry over to St John. You can take the car ferry or the passenger ferry. It depends on where you're staying. If you just plan on stay in Charlotte Amalie or Red Hook then you can just take the passenger ferry over and there will be taxi and a bus on the island (I don't think there are very many busses though so don't bank on that was your sole means to get around)
      Most of the crusiers use this method to get to St John. We rented a car because we wanted to explore both islands as much as we could and hit up all the different beaches. Plus, our Airbnb was near the top of the mountain.

  • @Thehondad

    • @TheDetourDuo
      @TheDetourDuo  3 місяці тому +1

      It is but you'd probably have to dedicate at least half the day to the adventure. There were cruisers on St John when we were there. Essentially you'd have to hop on the passenger ferry from Charlotte Amalie and then there should be taxis in cruz bay to take you wherever. Trunk Bay is your closest beach in the park. Just either get the taxi phone number or card so they can pick you up in time to get you back

    • @TheDetourDuo
      @TheDetourDuo  Рік тому +3

      All great questions. If you're going to stay on St John, then it's better to just rent there so you won't have to pay the extra $65 per roundtrip for the car ferry as often. If you're staying on St Thomas and making multiple trips to St John, then rent on St Thomas. Just be aware that some of the car rental agencies don't like it when you take their vehicle on the car ferry. The rental company we used, and would 100% recommend, is called "Dexter's Car Rental". Very accommodating, and super friendly. Read quite a few horror stories about other agencies, but every review about Dexter's sings their praises for good reason.
      You don't need a jeep, but you definitely want a vehicle that is 4x4. Everyone wants to rent a jeep so they tend to hike the prices on them, and they get rented out quickly. If the aesthetic is not something you care about, save some money and get something a little cheaper with 4x4. You might be able to get away with not having 4x4 on St John because it's more paved and less of an uphill drive everywhere, but I still recommend 4x4. Also, it's nearly impossible to drive on St Thomas without it.
      If you do rent on St John though, all the car rental services we found are exclusively jeep rentals.

      It's definitely deep into hurricane season so you have to factor that in. On one hand, it's probably the cheapest flight deals you can find. Accommodations will probably been cheaper too. On the other hand, some businesses, excursions, etc might shut down in preparation for storms, or simply because there isn't enough tourism flowing through to stay open during the season. We went in Jan. Found cheap flight deals, weather was nice and there weren't many cruise ships pulling in yet so it wasn't crowded. I'd say around then, Dec-Feb is the best time to visit

For John, we will likely want to explore most of it if possible. Is gas going to be a concern once we rent a car, are the gas stations mainly at Cruz Bay? Once we are done with John, we would like to spend about 3 days at Thomas exploring. Is it easy to travel on Thomas without a rental car, are taxi/local transport rates high? I would prefer not to have a car on Thomas due to the more hectic nature there, but if need be we can.

    • @TheDetourDuo
      @TheDetourDuo  Рік тому +3

      Thanks so much! I don’t think gas will be a concern. We spent 7 days between St Thomas and St John and only needed to refill the Jeep once (not including topping it off before returning). We only used the car for transportation and we drove A LOT so you should be fine!
      It looked to be pretty easy getting around to the popular spots via the taxis on St Thomas. Since we had our rental car, we actually didn’t use any of the taxis but they were everywhere and dropped off at popular spots like Magen’s Bay, Mountain Top, etc.
