  • The head of the Sofia office of the European Council on Foreign Relations Maria Simeonova spoke to Vladimir Mitev about the proposal of politicians from Greece, Romania and Bulgaria for elimination of border controls between their countries, which came one month after Austria, Bulgaria and Romania reached an agreement on the issue of Schengen accession for Bulgaria and Romania, which let them in, while preserving the land borders control between them and their Schengen neighbours.
Maria Simeonova explianed that in the current variation the proposal of the politicians from the three countries has a stronger political support than before - with evident Greek support for it and with Dacian Cioloș - an influentian Romanian politician on EU‌ level (former eurocommissioner and former president of the Renew Europe parliamentary group) also providing backing for it. However, Maria Simeonova also points that besides the need for wider political support for such an idea, there is a need for clarity of the technical or juridical aspects related to it. The European Commission so far has not commented it.
Maria Simeonova also points out that Bulgaria and Romania shouldn't lose sight of the ultimate goal which is accession to Schengen via land borders, no matter the outcome of this current initiative for elimination of border controls among the three Schengen members in Southeastern Europe.
