In which John discusses the career of Ivan IV, aka Ivan the Terrible, Russia's first self-declared Tsar (or czar depending on your transliteration). Further proof that history is fun!

"You're mostly potty trained but not totally ready to run a country" things people will say about the Trump presidency. Oh God, what have they done?
A terrible, terrible thing.
truer for senile Biden hahaha, what a magnificent descent
Don't get me started on the Library of Alexandria...
OH GOD THAT MAKES ME SO ANGRY!
+daydodog How about Bagdad? It's up there when it comes to loss of books.
Screaming
"Never be Russian and named Anastasia."
ACCURATE.
Wait so all of Nerdfighteria has still not found the lost library? WE MUST RALLY THE CAUSE TO NEW HEIGHTS!!!
I realize this is 10 years later, but today I read an article from the University of Washington in the 80s that makes the case that the library probably sadly doesn’t exist.
IUR TELLING ME THAT SOMEWHERE MAYBE THERES A GIANT LIBRAY UNDER MOSCOW!? THIS. IS. AMAZING.
Your little history lessons are ALWAYS on the few topics that I really enjoyed in World History. I really hated that class, but some history actually is extremely interesting.
loves it.
It’s a great day to not die of leg boils
"the boneless" was always my favorite title that a king was given.
'And you're like "They killed my Mom, they made me very anxious as a child..." '
:D
Oh John, how we love you...
So is there an update on what happened with this? It's been 5 years

i think i may have a library card from this terrible library... its expired tho and the book i have is very very over due so nevermind...
That's the angriest I've ever seen John
Well, you should check beggining of "Giant squid of love" video :D
I'm going through ALL of the vlogsbrothers videos as I didn't know about this channel until like mid-last year...help me. John and Hank (Or Hank and John) are funny and adorable but help me, so many videos...
Haru Squid Articide good news! this year every say they post all videos made on that day in the community tab! I've apparently never seen any of the 2009 videos myself
Semira D Well bad news, they soon stopped :(
I know, wonder why.
What I've been doing is going through the year playlists and going from 2007 to the present. However, there's going to be trouble because they stopped halfway through 2015.
the link now goes to a site selling Instagram followers
This is one of my top ten favorite vlogbrothers videos. Just, for the record
I'm going to Russia.
***** LOL If you promise to help look for the library!
*gets suitcase* I hopefully won't need books once I come back from Moscow...
Abigail Spencer LOL
I also get very upset when people screw around with libraries. I love love love books.
Well It's time to contact cousin Andrei in Moscow to see if he knows anything, him being the one keeping all the family records and knowing the history of the Pavlovs dating back to Czar St. Dimitri, along with remembering all of the passed down stories and having all records of the family Diaspora, he believes that my family has something to do with Ivan the Terrible and Ivan the Great
Looking forward to seeing a follow-up video if the nerdfighters uncover anything!
And congrats on 800 videos. =)
I bloody love John's videos. WHAT A BRILLIANT MAN.
Pack your bags were going to Russia
Don't forget that he poked out the eyes of th architects who designed the cathedral in Moscow.
i honestly just like listening to you talk. i click the vid, listen while doing facebook, or tumblr, or whatever it may be. congrats to you john. not only are your books great, but your voice is great, as well.
Congratulations, John and Hank, on reaching 800 videos! I know that there will be plenty more to come!
Ya and through his grandmother Ivan had Byzantine blood and was legal heir to the Roman Empire.
I bet there's this really poor twelve year old who knows where the library is but doesn't want to exploit it's riches so he or she hoes down there just to read.
There was an ancient library written in Coptic-Egyptian found in Egypt (of course). The peasant-discoverer's wife used the almost two-thousand year old papyrus as kindling for lighting their coal stove.
What a wonderful story! Thank you vlogbrothers!
Wow, 800 videos, what an awesome milestone.
Seriously, you guys have made my life 100000x better just by making three videos per week.
Thank you.
Is it weird that my best friend is russian and named Anastaisa? Or is it just awkward that I mentioned that…
I love dogs by definition of "weird" and "awkward" it is neither
Why don't you want to find the library as you said in your annotation? THESE ARE BOOKS WE'RE TALKING ABOUT.
I think he just means that he doesn't want a bunch of nerdfighters to go out to Russia with shovels, he means that nerdfighters should find out about the library.
Learning FTW Yeah, a bunch of people heading to Russia with shovels would probably get them all killed. Sadly, anything to do with Russia and uncovering (possibly especially uncovering) is shady work that may, most likely, get you killed. Oh, Russia. You're so pretty but your government is terrifying and makes me not want to go there, which is a shame because you are a wondrous country with a wealth of history. Now I'm sad.
SansSkeleton
Half of that comment was addressed to me and half of it to Russia, and then one line at the end to me, and now the social-awkardness bit of me has kicked in and I'm having anxiety over this response. Thanks.
Learning FTW AWE! I'm so sorry, you are a wonderful person. I think I just lost my train of thought and started rambling a bit, so ignore anything that could cause you any amount of distress. :)
SansSkeleton
It's fine... if I had been in a different mood I would have found it hilarious. Thanks for being so nice.
Thank you John. I now know what I will be doing over spring break.
800 videos of awesome. Keep it up, John and Hank.
Holy poop the picture in the background is the one from paper towns!
Great and terrible. Thank you mister Baum.
Lol :)
I really like how you give us an understanding of this topic. I mean, I never heard about the library before and now I know - at least a little bit. Very well done (: I hope Nerdfighters can find out all about it!
800 VIDEOS Congratulations john and hank
I'm Russian....
Can't we just use radar or something to scan the tunnels to look for the big obvious room containing a shit-ton of books?
oh cool...
All of the actual thoughts about where it is on reddit and stuff are actually so boring and obviously made with no knowledge of what supposedly happened, There are like, three main theories, either it never existed (which isn't true because there are accounts of people who went to it) or it was all sold one by one (which also doesn't make sense, because where are these beautiful books, also NO ONE KNEW WHERE IT WAS except for Ivan and his father.) OR it was burned at some point, whether intentional or not, (which is also illogical, because people who say this are assuming it's in Moscow, what if it isn't? Also, if no one is in there, how can it burn down with no open flames, gas or other fire starting things in there?)
+Emily C Moscow and its vicinity have been burned to the ground infamously and frequently since Ivan's rule in the 12th century. If it is not in Moscow, I would probably bet it's in Suzdal (an hour north of Vladimir), home to many 12th century churches, featured with its own kremlin. That's where I would look.
Petter Christian Ness I will make a pilgrimage someday :)
Woah, we just finished up some Ivan stuff in my AP world history class. You're awesome, John!
800 videos and I've watched almost every one! That being said I lost track somewhere around the second-third year and picked need to go through them again to find any I may have missed. Hoo Haa Nerdfighters!
The way he talks and is so animated really reflects on how he wrote papertowns. BRILLIANT BOOK.
Ok, so this video is so awesome that it showed up in the suggestions box next to the video screen as the featured video . . . while I was watching it. :D
A good video for a guy with a fever.
DFTBA, John. Hope you feel better and I can't wait to see what Nerdfighters come up with regarding Ivan's secret library.
Goosebumps galore. You make people take action, John! AHHHHHHH!
Man, history is awesome, and you are great at telling it.
im amazed at the amount of words these two can fit into one breath.
I think I like it when vlogbrothers make videos whilst sick. First, Hank's adorable voice, and now this amazing quest. John, if only you had told me about this sooner! It woul have been a PERFECT HI/EE topic!!!!!!!!
Thanks for inspiring me to read up on Ivan the terrible, I now have yet another interesting topic to add to my pick-up repertoire :)
800th video! And this sounds interesting... I love how you went crazy about the library.
At first I was like, "What? He wants us to FIND this freaking library, is he nuts?" But then the little box came up and I was like, "Oh, that makes more sense."
CONGRATS ON FREAKING 800 VIDEOS!!! *Gives John and Hank cupcake in honor* Enjoy! Here's to many more videos! :)
i really love you and your brothers videos!!!!!
so apparently my favorite author also makes awesome youtube videos? this is a good day
CONGRATULATIONS ON 800TH VIDEO!
the coolest challenge yet !!!
Congrats on 800th video! :D
This is probably the most amazing use of UA-cam ever. EVER!
When we were learning about Greece and Rome in Global, my teacher got sick of the "great" names. He proceeded to put "Fred the Mediocre" on a list of terms we were to define for homework as a joke.
Too many friends of mine contacted me in an absolute panic when they were unable to find any reference of this fake man in our textbook.
When we got to the Medieval Europe unit, learning about those listed above was far more difficult because of the resulting incredulous view of people's names.
I am also sick John. I just woke up in the middle of the night with a stuffy nose, sore throat and an annoying cough. I hope we get better! At least now i have time for a vlogbrothers marathon.
Ya know, a few minutes ago, I thought to myself, "Man I could use some vlogbrothers." You have quenched my thirst for intelligent conversation, for which I can not have on my own.
By the way....you guys have made 800 videos. Thats a lot. Congrats!!!
"great and terrible" is the best word combination ever combined, just beating "Reese's and pieces"
KILLING A CHILD is worse than not finding a library.
I've never been so disappointed in the Vlog brothers.
Hey! Congrats on video number 800! :D
Congratulations on the 800th video! :)
That is absolutely wonderful. There is nothing as cool as mystery treasure and no treasure better than super old books.
Feverish John is feverishly excited about the lost library. I like it.
This is so great. A true challenge for us.
Sooo... I came here again after rewatching another old vlogbrothers video (signing psychosis) in which John sais:
"[...]okay Hank, I need Nerfighteria's help, nerdfighters, you have uncovered the story of Ivan the Terrible's terrible library, you have found the truth [...]" but I couldn't find anything on the subject of the library being found... was it uncovered? Did nerdfighters do it?
Hank once stated that the recovery of the library of Alexandria would be one of the things he would gladly die for.
You know, that's actually a really beautiful, tragic story. Has anyone ever made a movie or a novel about Ivan? Because it would ROCK.
800th video! Congrats, guys!
800th video! Congrats guys!
Grats on 800th video!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :D
@SunshineMayflower YES! Yes it does!! Fabulous. Was thinking that as soon as he mentioned a hidden library :D
If I met you, I would shake your hand. Sadly, I live in England and so I have never had the joy of tasting a corndog, but your point is excellent. And having DFTBA engraved into the chairs, that, my friend, is really awesome. :)
Feel better soon, John!
Ah yes, the Halcyon Days of 2011 Vlogbrothers: John shouts facts with few breaths and even fewer blinks and jump cuts that are no longer painfully long, but still uncomfortably long
Thank you for taking the time to talk about the city that I was born in :)
Sincerely,
A Russian Nerdfighter who now randomly lives in the state of Utah.
I'm surprised no one else caught the phrase "crusted enjewels." It's admirable that, given the high fever, that was John's only noticeable slip-up.
this is why i subbed to your channel, not the prospect of billions upon billions of dollars (although come to metion it..), but ur amazing influence of tangenial lerning you so eliquently weild, seriously everytime you release a vid i am forced to visit wikipedia for atleast half an hour trying to re-educate myself about some point raised in your videos.
thank you
Excited!
you make history fun!
Oh god so much education. John, you should teach every class ever because I learn double from you what I learn from anyone else.
i love you john green! your still making this video when you have a 101.2 fever!!!!! ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥
When you said the comment about Anastasia, I got once upon a December stuck in my head......
Hey John, watching this video inspired me to write a book about a quest for the Library and was wondering if you wouldn't mind reading just the first chapter
French the Llama. I'm feeling nostalgic for something that hasn't even happened yet. THAT WOULD BE THE EPITOME OF AWESOME.
happy 800 vid c:
For some reason I wouldn't be surprised if Nerdfighteria DID find that library.
I have to write a paper on Ivan the Terrible, so when I searched him on UA-cam and saw John made a video on him I got more excited than I should have. I learned more about Ivan the Terrible in three minutes & forty seconds of this video than I did spending hours reading biographies and articles.
Hey Hank and John
I found out today that it is in debate in congress to cut the We the People competition. "The primary goal of We the People: The Citizen and the Constitution is to promote civic competence and responsibility among the nation’s elementary and secondary students." (new.civiced.org). Many people I know and myself were looking forward to the chance of participating in it next year and have been since we first heard about it freshman year. Please consider a vlog on this!
A week? I think we'll LOCATE the library before Hank's next vid.
Why do I think this?
Because It's Awesome, and that's what we do.
I understand why you were so irate about the loss of the fancy library! I am quite distraught as well.
Ooh I wanna see that library! :D
I love this!
Prince Rostislav Rostislavovich was born in Lake Forest, Illinois belongs to the Mihailovichi branch of the Romanovs as a male line descendant of Grand Duke Michael Nikolaevich of Russia the youngest son of Emperor Nicholas I. He is also a descendant of Emperor Alexander II and Emperor Alexander III, being the great grandson of Grand Duchess Xenia Alexandrovna of Russia, the sister of the last Russian Emperor Nicholas II, and of her husband Grand Duke Alexander Mikhailovich of Russia.
GRR!! you gave me your fever over the Internet!!!
When I read the title I thought it was going to be about Rebecca Black's Friday.
But then I realized you have better topics to talk about.
i think i just had a nerdeurysm.
like, a nerdfighteria brand of aneurysm.
HOLY JOJO THAT WOULD ONLY BE THE MOST BEEYOOTIFUL DISCOVERY IN THE UNIVERSE.
