    You won't need to interact with another human to order or pick up your food.

      yeah try being one of the waiters/workers in the place. its a god damn luxury being able to be the person whos able to complain about just a tiny thing like that. i did a few months in a big cafe as work experience and ive vowed to never work in the industry again. such a draining job

      Deliveroo is a service that gets food for you from restaurants that normally don't deliver, kind of an uber for food. So basically you have to assume full sit down restaurant prices with a small surcharge. I think this place is just a central collection point where you can get your order and eat it too.

    When I was a kid we had these places called automats. You went in looked through all these little windows, paid with coins, door unlocked, you got your food. No servers or cashiers. We come full circle.

    • @mordeys
      @mordeys 4 роки тому +12

      that's what i was going to say. auto-mats were all over the place in larger towns. you walk past, see something you like and put a coin or token in to open the little window. you take your food and the cooks behind the wall fill it with another dish. i would love to see those come back. i think it would be fun.

      I think about this a lot actually.
      If you take a look around, the VAST majority of shit we have today - which we ironically deem futuristic - was something that was around *decades* ago, but was seen as so useless, unnecessary and over-the-top that societies largely had zero interest in them. But thanks to decreasing cost in technology and rising acceptance of throwaway culture, they've suddenly turned into very appealing options.
      Cars are one of the best showcases of this behavior; GPS, touchscreens, push to start, etc. were all implemented decades before they became mainstreams (PTS buttons have been around *for a century* actually, being an option on the Model T)

    • @candacerain1
      @candacerain1 4 роки тому +20

      I think it wouldn't work in most American cities. However, in places like New York it could work because you have enough clientele to utilize the machine. These machines could work in malls too but like I said it would have to be where the foot traffic is. If you have a dead or dying mall it wouldn't work.

    • @retromoviefan944
      @retromoviefan944 4 роки тому +18

      yep, we have too many thugs in our cities who would kick the machines in or break into them. There's have to be 24/7 security just to keep the gang bangers from tearing them open. That's why this stuff won't work in places like Vegas or Los Angeles.....just nasty types living there.

      Annie onymouse it was also a problem due to inflation, as back then there weren’t electronic bill acceptors so you could only pay with coins and you would need like 20 quarters to pay for a $5 item.
      It could come back today, but currently no one in America has tried it again yet.

    I could see this being really nice for airports or a 24-hour diner during slow/night hours, but if this became widespread I feel like it's just a bit too impersonal and cold. It's an interesting idea, I'll give it that, but the entire place for me is just too quiet. The lack of staff besides what you don't see is also slightly concerning but who knows, maybe they have cameras or something in case anything bad happens.

      I agree with you on the airport bit. Places like this would be a major hit in some of the major international airports such as SFO, SJC, PHX, LAX, ect. It could work perfectly for passengers and crews with long layovers. Perhaps they could play music or have background noise play through speakers to help with the silence.

    I barely remember the restaurants they had in the USA called Automats. I was about 4 or 5 and the big bus station had them. Each freshly made dish was in a little cubbyhole and you put in the coins to open the door to get the treat. Anything from salad to sandwiches, desserts, main dishes or fruit and vegetables. The cooks behind the panel kept the cubbies stocked as the items disappeared. Drinks I think were served at a counter. I remember a trip to see Grandma where I got the "traveler's fruit bag" and thought it so fun to put coin in and get the clear bag of a shiny red apple and cold grapes.

    This is similar to the ghost kitchens we have here in the states. You can either place an order online, or you can place an order at a terminal at the counter. There are multiple "restaurants" housed in the same building giving you a choice of different foods. Although there are restaurants that have different names, but sell similar plates. They just have different names.

    I love this idea, especially from a tourist standpoint when you can't easily hit up all the restaurants you want to in the area without walking a lot or spending fees on taxi/buses in the limited time you have. Would love to have this as the norm near major hotels, since last time I was overseas and tried to ubereats to my hotel it was rejected because I didn't have a local phone number.

    Curious to know where all the people who say this is expensive live. As in which country?
    In Australia this is what we would normally pay. Singapore prices are actually the same as you would pay in Australia.
    To us it's not expensive, it's what we normally pay, so it surprises me that people are saying that it's expensive.
    I've been to Norway, Sweden and Denmark .... if you want to know what expensive really is, go to those countries.
    I think I paid around AUD $35 for a burger, fries and coke in Denmark. Because they are wealthier countries everything costs way more. Of course to the locals of those countries its normal pricing.

Of course no debit cards, you just went to the little window and put in the coins to get your food. People in the back updated the empty compartments. The first automat was in 1896 in Berlin, Germany.

    To people saying the food is expensive, remember that this is in Singapore, so certain foods that are cheap in America can be more expensive there. Notice that the curry soup was only like $7 as curry is really common in Singapore, while a burger costs a lot more because they are a lot less common than they are in the US. Same reason why that curry dish would probably cost $15 in the US, we don’t have a lot of curry places around. Also I remember Dancing Bacons saying that Ben and Jerry’s is hard to find in Asian countries from another of his videos so that explains why that’s also more expensive.

    That is, oddly, the most depressing place I have ever seen. The space, the quietness, the bright lighting and inviting feel - yet everyone's buried in a phone. It's like a place that was built for human interaction while simultaneously trying to avoid it as there's very little need for it here - almost to serve as a mocking reminder to what restaurants once were.
    The extremely expensive food is just insult to injury.

    I think this kind of Diner Vending would go over very well in the states esp in intercity centers. Decades ago the US did try but it didn't go over very well only beacuse of the stigma around " vending machine food " is looked as bad or just junk food here in the states. But times have changed and I think this would go over well. After all. The first mondern food vending machine was located here in the US. The automat restaurants back in the mid 1900's! Look it up really cool concept that did lead the way to this.

    I wonder if they're a contract kitchen? Contract kitchens are businesses that license different menu items from sit-down restaurants to sell via home delivery. Many contract kitchens are used by higher end restaurants so they aren't taking up space with takeout orders.
    These people might have decided to open a sit-down space for directly delivery. Since they aren't representing themselves as the given restaurant, and have no cashiers or wait staff, they aren't really in direct competition with their contracted customers.
