    Its worth it to me. Ive had cheap packs but I got a Kifaru and its the best piece if gear ive owned. But I do agree with you 100% that just go with what you can get. Ive not always been able to afford nice gear and ive made a ton of memories and wouldnt trade those for anything.

    I've been running the Mystery Ranch Ravine 50 for 5 or 6 years now and love it!! I use to use Osprey packs until trying out a Mystery Ranch daypack (Urban Assault). After using it for a month I changed my backpacking pack to the Ravine 50, and haven't looked back. Here recently I have been considering picking up the Terraframe 65.

    There's one important difference you didn't really mention. Its the materials AND stitching. The fabric is probably twice the weight but will survive multiple scrapes and being put on rocks and rought terrain. The stitching on some of those light bags will probably tear under heavy load when you can least afford it to happen. A burst bag is the worst thing that can happen in the wilderness. If you're on your own on a multi-day trip in the wilderness, its a disaster. So if I'm on a longer trip and not in a rush, I'll take the heavier, more comfortable bag. It'll be a bag I can rely on.

    I ended up using my $500 bag for rucking local hills with almost triple my backpacking gear weight since it is very robust and is made to take a heavy load. Meanwhile the actual bag I use for backpacking was on sale $120 and is significantly lighter, I was able to replace the waste strap with a combat belt and added molle dump pouches to move some of the weight of my water bottles and such forward and off my back, and it works pretty well.

    I used to have a cheap bag, then I started doing some mountaineering and I had to carry more weight. I invested in an Osprey bag and it was a massive change, not only is it more durable but also the ergonomics and weight distribution made my 45lb heavy pack feel lighter than my previous one

    Mystery Ranch all the way. They have packs that are more reasonably priced too. Good customer service and reliability. You're right about "use what you have" though. I bought the Bridger 65L back in May when it came out. I have a couple Osprey packs as well and recently bought a Gossemer Gear Maripossa 60 (purchased specifically for a couple trips this year but have not used). The Bridger is almost 2 times as heavy as the Osprey’s but actually carries lighter. I love it and the ton of features it has. I let a buddy carry it for a quarter mile who has a Gregory and immediately after he strapped it on he said “Holy crap this is comfortable, my next purchase for sure”

    I have had some really bad packs such as a blaze orange external frame pack that used in Boy Scouts which had no hip belt until I added one as an accessory! The ALICE Pack system that I was issued in the Marine Corps! That system was a dog, and yet, I still may have one somewhere... 🤔 And, now I have a "tactical pack" which weighs 5.7 lbs empty and is about a 40 L pack, which isn't too bad and not too good either. Choosing a pack is a "mission specific" tool when taken into consideration. Duration of the trip, and what your load out will be.
    Now I'm an older hiker and looking for a specific type of pack that will handle tent, sleep system, food, and clothing... and oh yes a box of cartridge's for my handgun (a must for hiking in wild hog / bear country). Keeping it real and enjoying the trail... And I did enjoy the video- thanks.

    I'd love to try out some of the Mystery Ranch stuff, but I'm definitely limited to more budget-friendly options. That said, a better comparison (durability/features-wise) to the MR would probably be something like a Kelty Coyote. It isn't the lightest pack on the market, and I'm sure it isn't as comfortable as the MR pack, but it is comfortable and seems really durable for the price.

I can hold my 4 season tent, sleeping bag, inflatable pad, a small stove, toilet bag,lighting, etc. Despite my heavy bag that holds more weight than an ultra lightweight, it doesn't feel heavy because it fits me well.

    13:30 I'm new to this stuff. But from the videos I watched, I understand that this "normal" backpacking is cheaper than "Minimalist ultralight backpacking". Ultralight backpackers are ready to spend so much more on equipment that weights a couple of grams less. Those ultralight bags themselves have minimal features, can cost 1000 $ are not durable at all, they are meant to use for one trip and it is not a defect only con on an ultralight backpack.
    I bought myself "Decathlon "trek 100 easyfit" 50 liter backpack, it was 58EUR or some 80$. Has 10-year warranty for that price. Have yet to test it out, but it had really good reviews on youtube. The backpack has an innovative strap adjustment system.

    • @BackpackingTV
      @BackpackingTV  3 роки тому

      I'm not really an ultralight guy. Sure it's great when you can save weight. But I'm nowhere near as aggressive with saving weight than the thru-hiker types. Hopefully though, the Ultralight gear can also be durable, not just a one-time use thing. Often thru-hikers put gear through way more wear and tear than a week warrior. So I don't know what gear you're talking about that is done after one trip. But good for you finding a solid option under $100 bucks! Go use it and let me know what your thought are on it!

    I find most, if not all of what you said to be accurate.
    I find that getting the right fit with a backpack is somewhat difficult, and definitely not an exact science.
    For this reason I have gravitated to backpacks with adjustable
    length suspensions.
    The Gregory Stout 45, and the Kelty Redwing 50 have performed well for me so far.
    I am still looking at others that have more capacity, and adjustability, like perhaps the Gregory Stout 60, the Osprey Atmos 50, and other adjustable suspension backpacks that though larger, and heavier, are actually more comfortable, and less irritating, and tiring to wear, or carry.
    Any suggestions?

      Gregory baltoro. Love mine and I think you will too if you like your gregory

    • @msilverhammer
      @msilverhammer 3 роки тому

      @@FallenTreeNation I just checked, a Gregory Baltoro 65, Large Size, weighs in at 5.14 pounds empty, and $300.00!
      My Gregory Stout 45, Large Size weighs in at 2.6 pounds empty, and I picked it up on sale for about $50.00.
      The question is, will a plus 5 pound backpack feel more comfortable, and be less noticeable to your hips, back and shoulders, than a backpack that weighs 2 pounds?
      I recently purchased a 2 pound, Gossamer Gear Mariposa 60, Large Size, which routinely receives 5 star ratings from most reviewers, yet I did not like the way it felt, as being a non adjustable pack, I could not dial in the right fit, and I felt that when loaded, I could not get the correct purchase on my waist and hips.
      The pack is also noisy, and squeaks, all the time.
      Despite following their fitting and sizing guide, I feel like the pack rides too low when loaded, which is irritating.
      It is better when carrying a lighter load, naturally.
      So maybe I need a medium size pack, or perhaps a different length hip belt to five me more purchase, or grip at the hips, but now I am stuck with the large size that I recently purchased.
      Anyway, because of the irritation, I used my adjustable Kelty Redwing 50 that weighs over 3 pounds ib my last backpacking adventure, and it worked fine, but still not at the comfort level I would like.
      What do you say about the plus 5 pound weight of the Gregory Baltoro?
      I was also considering the Osprey Atmos line, and again though heavy, seems to inexplicably carry loads more comfortably than packs that weigh half as much.
      Thanks!

    • @FallenTreeNation
      @FallenTreeNation 3 роки тому +1

      @@msilverhammer First of all, getting a stout for $50 is great deal congrats! it seems like all the bags around the 65L size that will carry enough weight for me were around the same weight give or take half a pound.
      I was looking at the osprey atmos but found that while it was more comfortable on the shoulders the gregory baltoro was more comfortable for my hips which I thought was more important.
      Both bags are expensive, and the osprey doesn't include a rain cover.
      Honestly your best bet is to go to a outdoor supply store and try both on. Most good stores will properly fit you and put some weights in the bag so you can see how it feels.

      I like the dialogue here. @Msilverhammer I find the bulkier, heavier packs invest in comfort and durability, two things I look for. But the specifics of each design will vary of course and some will work well for some body types and not be as nice for others. Trying stuff on in stores with as much weight as they'll put in there will help you make a good choice. But unfortunately, no in store situation can give you the same information as a twenty mile backpacking trip. I've been really happy with my Baltoro too, like what @fallenTreeNation said. I've had good success with Osprey too, typically very comfortable. But FYI I've had more zipper failures with them than any other pack.

    Any backpack that gets you out into the woods is a good backpack, HOWEVER..., if you're going to pack for days & miles with a 3 day loadout, you need to make sure that you have something that will "not" fail and that will carry your load efficiently which leads to less of a chance of an injury. Balance is everything as is weight distribution, so yeah, a $300, $400, $500 pack is worth it for someone who's going to use it. In fact, these days, $200 packs are excellent and can be had for around $150 during sales. After $300, those are specialty packs for expedition grade rigs.
    But for someone who finds a love for backpacking, $100 is renting a bag. They'll end up with a pack costing 2-3X as much after a season.
    Having said that, I'd been EDCing a $20 military surplus ILBE Assault Pack for a decade. It's not thru-hiking comfortable, but it's bombproof.
    I use packs at least 100 days out of the year and under extreme duress conditions (hunting) and they see 80 degree days and they see sub-zero days. They see sun, they see rain, they see snow and they get maxed out weight-wise so I appreciate bags that last more than a month.

    Hi Eric,
    while I understand your comparison, the apples to pears comparison needs to be pointed out better. Explaining the Marmot with a computer sleeve against a heavy load carry is not a valid argument for a more expensive pack. Completely different purposes for each design.
    I like what your intent it, but almost feel like you need to have a "co-host" (different in each episode) to counter some of your arguments.
    Your defense to an opposite view will raise your credibility.
    This from a guy who still uses my 2000CI (notice the old volume measurement) EMS from the 1990s for some hikes, and wears Teva year-round for all my camping and hiking; all weather.

    But your choice is not only between a $100 and $500 backpack. Gregory, Osprey, etc all make solid, robust, and functional packs for prices in between with lifetime guarantees. This is not an either $100 or $500 discussion as you have framed it. You clearly like your $500 pack, but there are other less expensive options that have similar or, to some people’s mind, improved functionality.
