One of my favourite aspects of this novel was the platonic relationship between Eleanor and Raymond. As an asexual myself, I felt seen. Eleanor may be now open to exploring romance, but I hope that if there is ever a sequel or an adaptation, the relationship between them remains platonic. I think we need to remember as a society that two people can just been friends.

The part where she thinks Bobbi Brown is the name of the make up consultant. Lol

The big twist with Eleanor's mother was probably my favorite part. Because the thing is, when Eleanor is talking to her mother, the reader *assumes* it's on the phone. Except that Eleanor *never* *once* *mentions* *a* *phone* . This little detail blew me away when I pieced it together because Gail Honeyman bet entirely on the reader taking certain things for granted, and it ACTUALLY WORKED.

No way! I missed that. Wow, clever writing.

*Spoilers* I really liked that it's kind of left ambiguous whether Eleanor's and Raymond's relationship could turn romantic. By the end of the book she's definitely not in a place to be in a relationship so I liked that this book is not meant to be a happy story that ends with a romantic relationship, but kept on track about being a woman confronting her trauma and finding someone to support her in a platonic way.

*SPOILERS*: I read the book in three days, was a zombie for two, and immediately started rereading it. Interesting point: when she's talking with Mummy, she never mentions or indicates a phone. In fact, some of her actions during the chat could tip that she actually _isn't_ on a phone. Honeyman did such an awesome slight of hand that we all thought this was an actual phone call!
An interview with Honeyman brought out this wasn't meant to be a love story, which nailed why I love this so much; a sincere, candid relationship between two people who aren't trying to impress each other. Eleanor and Raymond saw each others' off-putting personality quirks and habits as they were and still became friends. And while I personally see their relationship as staying platonic, it's up to them to be willing to accept the flaws of the other if they want to advance the relationship. I liked how "love" wasn't the answer to Eleanor's trauma, it was real therapy and personal focus, and Raymond doesn't change his habits because of a girl.

This was one of the most surprising books I’ve ever read in that I didn’t expect to love it as much as I do! Eleanor felt original without it feeling like the author was trying to make her “different and unique” idk if that makes sense haha. And yes I literally did not even think what happened to her mother was even a possibility, it was such a cool twist

YES i definitely know exactly what you mean. it's so effortlessly off-beat, in a way that's not convoluted or annoying.

I finally finished reading this book! I loved it so much I never wanted it to end! I just finished it a few minutes ago actually, and ran here immediately! At first it took me a while to get into it as I was extremely irritated by Eleanor, she was so weird, I thought. But as the story progressed and I learned more about her life, I fell into such a deep love with her character. She could surprisingly, be so painfully relatable at times. I was so so happy to see her grow as a person throughout the book, it filled my heart with warmth to see her learn to be happy, and Glen was such a delight. Raymond was the sweetest and I wanted to keep reading about him and Eleanor forever!!! I had been in a terrible reading slump for a little more than a year so Eleanor pulled me right out of it, and I loved every second of it. So while I'm sad the book ended, I'm so so happy I finished this book and loved it as much as I did. Thank you for the great review ❤

And yes Eleanor, once I got used to her, was hilarious LOL I loved her, every time she made a jab about Raymond's smoking habits I couldn't help but giggle. I can't repeat enough how much I love her chatacter and story, thank you for encouraging me to read this!!! 💕

I adored Raymond and Eleanor's platonic relationship, it warmed me so much! However towards the end when they share a look outside the coffee shop, it felt like their relationship turned romantic in that moment. I don't mind that much though, because their relationship was beautiful, and I think love blossoming from such a good friendship is a lovely thing. Either way, I love them :)

Done reading this book yesterday. It's so beautiful and heartwarming and also very shocking! It was really difficult to let go and end the book because it became my bestfriend. Eleanor Oliphant is really relatable, I sometimes/always thought that Eleanor was real but I always kept reminding myself that she is just a fictional character. The plot twist was really unexpected! But after reading it, and connected the dots all throughout the story, there's one thing that Eleanor Oliphant gave such a BIG spoiler alert for us! And that was when she mentioned one of her all time favorite novel, the *Sense and Sensibility by Jane Austen*. You will get this after you read the book and connect that dots all together. I rate this beyond than 5 stars! Really love it! 💓

Super late to this video! But just read this book today and was looking for reviews where someone felt the way I did about Eleanor! It took me 20-30 pages to understand why the writing was so stiff; but after I understood her I knew I would keep this character close to my heart forever.

I looked up words also. I thought her sense of humor was great. Raymond’s T shirts were always quotes from TV shows ( Carcetti for Mayor is from The Wire). Also, I loved her response to a Spongebob balloon. Adding this to fav books.

I really, really loved the book 5 stars. At first it was kind of difficult to get Eleanor’s behavior but I quickly got past that, but I did stop the lecture from time to time, because I didn’t like the way people treated her in regular days. Once I kept reading, I couldn’t stop.
Loved your review, and yes I think that with that ending, there would be romance. ♥️

A friend recommended this book and I wasn’t sure if I was going to like it because like you said, it’s not for everybody. I ended up loving it and couldn’t put it down! I agree with everything you said about this book! I also learned so many new words! HA! I laughed so hard when she said Raymond was an audible masticator. LOL! I was super nervous when Laura was in the picture, but I’m glad things turned out the way they did. To think that she was trying to avoid Raymond that day. Such a good book! Might be my favorite.

I loved this so much and couldn't put it down. I would love to know what happens with Eleanor and Raymond. Thanks Gail Honeyman. I love, love, loved it. Loneliness is an epidemic and there moments of my own young womanhood in Eleanor. The message? Just be kind. We don't ever know what trauma someone has experienced and how much they might just need a friend.

    *SPOILER*
I like you wasn't sure where Gail was going with Raymond and Eleanor's relationship but I thought it was platonic. I read it a while ago but I remember thinking that it was more that Eleanor had been so lonely (the book is so good on loneliness) and had never seen experienced a loving relationship of any kind before, so she was enjoying being liked and treated well. Who knows though!

    • @bookishsophia
      @bookishsophia  6 років тому +3

that's definitely a very likely possibility! what i loved so much about the book was that it was eleanor's kind-of discovery of what it meant to be treated like a real human being--with care and compassion. and raymond exhibited that care and compassion so beautifully

during the 3rd part of the book, there are a few gut-wrenching chapters of how she feels she should kill herself, which does devolve into how she has clinical depression and possibly other types of mental illness.
