Thanks for watching the video BAGPIPES IN ITALY? | MEETING UP WITH THE ZAMPOGNARI | Vlogmas 6
This Is REAL Italy. Thank you Nicki and Carlo for showing us the most interesting traditions that no documentaries ever bother showcasing. This is the type of thing we want. Real people. ❤️
I agree
She shows us real people all the time. Residents and craftsmen and women who make exquisite items including
goat herders on the side of the mountain making cheese. That's real.
Well said! Thank you Nicki and Carlo!
This is what is needed to make people feel connected globally. Thank you for the real experience of Italy.
Nicki I must say that your Vlogmas videos are amazing and so diverse. Today's was a real treat, getting to the heart of real Italian culture..superb...and Holly's little face was a picture 😂
The zoom into Holly’s face had me laughing. So interesting to hear from the locals and the traditions that are carried on.
😆
she did not look happy. the other dog and cat looked completely content and comfortable because they are use to the loud music and different sounds. heeheehe . holly is so cute.
My Irish- Scottish ancestors would find it hard to believe that there are bagpipes being played in Italy. But from what I've been learning, the ancient Gaels (Gaelic peoples) did not originate in Ireland, but rather, in northern Italy and lands east of it. No wonder Italy felt like home to me from the moment I set foot here. Thank you Nicki and Carlo for this wonderful video.
There are so many explanation for the origins of bagpipes, which are among other places prevalent in northern Spain, where they're called "gaita" and played by women as well.
I felt the same way about Ireland when we went there a few years ago. I Love the Irish. My roots are mostly Northern Italian and born in Australia. Thanks!
A closely related instrument to the pipes is also play in many northern regions of Portugal, and is known as gaita de foles
@@gabriellawilliams6866 Talk about global...lol
The bagpipe in all likelihood originated somewhere roughly around the Mediterranean, and some time from more or less Roman times up to the early Middle Ages, directly descending from reed pipes, which are known to have originated in the Middle East at least by the time of the Sumerian civilization.
All reed instruments descend from those early reed pipes.
Don't confuse the word Celt and Gael. Gael means the people speaking Irish, Scots Gaelic, and Manx. Celt is a bigger meaning.
It's a joy to witness how real people live... how different our lives are and yet the similarities. I'm also enjoying hearing both english and italian spoken. Thank you
How interesting!
It’s also so nice how everyone wants to share their stories and traditions with you and Carlo. Thank you for sharing them with us
WOW. Loved every second of this video. The language, the drone footage, the musicians, the structures, everything, everything. I find it interesting that music and instruments are somewhat the same everywhere. Truly a universal language. Keep doing what you are doing it’s great.
Wow, thank you!😘😘
Don't forget the blk and white Cat...the cat was enjoying the guests and excitement...precious..
I love when you feature the old Italian traditions and the people who are keeping them alive. All the pets were an added bonus!
i agree.
Look at you Nicki being all musically talented! LOVE IT! La fisarmonica is a dying talent. We still see some people in Puerto Rico play it but not as much as when I was growing up. Interesting bagpipes. The sound of them always makes me melancholy.
This was lovely. You are spoiling us!!!
Our son wanted to learn the accordion 20 years ago her in the middle of the US. Took a lot of effort to find a teacher, once he learned a few pieces, everyone was always charmed to hear it -- wonderful instrument.
I just wanted to take a moment to thank you for the wonderful vlogmas. This one was so authentic and interesting and beautiful!!! I have learned so much about your region of Italy and about Italy itself from you both. Thank you so much for taking the time and all the work that goes into making your vlogs, truly inspirational!!!
Love love love tradition!
In Puerto Rico we round up friends called"paranda" and go to different homes of other friends in the wee hours after midnight and sing Christmas songs and wait for them to invite us in!
Sometimes they'll take their time just because of the music!
In the end we eat, drink and enjoy!
Dear Carlo and Nicki in Mexico we called this instrument acordeón and is play by musical bands in the north of Mexico thanks for sharing such an interesting video!❤️ in my humble opinion Italy is the most beautiful country in the world🤩🤩
Cool, thanks!😘
Also in my opinion!!
Mexico is also very beautiful!
A terrific video! Not only is the music beautiful and hypnotic, but the history of these instruments is incredible. Its amazing that these same types of musical instruments have been played continuously for thousands of years. ❤️🤗 thank you for sharing this “living” history.
Omg poor Holly looked terrified and annoyed! She is such a good doggie.🐕❤️
How wonderful. Of all the documentrys and vlogs out there, you never ever see anything a s genuine as the ones you post.Thank you
This is beautiful! Thank you for showing/teaching us some BEAUTIFUL culture! It truly warmed my heart 💜
What fun! Holly and the other dog didn't look too impressed with the pipes - lol. The cat, however, seemed to really enjoy it and my own cat snoozed off on the back of the sofa quite content listening to it.
Oh we loved this! What gorgeous people and I was thinking isn’t is amazing how highland people in so many places seem to honour and play similar style instruments and music! So fascinating. It reminded of Scottish highland music but also the music I’ve heard played in the Sardinian hinterlands. You did a great job Nicki…bravissima 🤩😁👏👏👏
In Louisiana, my home, we have music like this and we call it Zydeco!
I thought the same thing. My father's father's family is Acadian and my mother's father's family is Sicilian.
It does sound like Zydeco!
Yes, the accordion is part of Acadian traditional music in the Maritime provinces - New Brunswick and Nova Scotia. And the button accordion is played in Newfoundland and Labrador. 🪗 Great kitchen party music 💕🇨🇦
Cajun music also uses the accordion
@@marydesrosiers9271 My ancestors are Acadian.
The singing with the pipes was fabulous. Heart in Scotland, soul in Italy x
THE LOOK ON HOLLY'S FACE IS PRICELESS!!!! 😆LOL 😆😂🤣
Wow, the heart and soul just radiates from the musicians-fantastic! Thanks for sharing. These Christmas vlogs are a treat.
I love this. You are documenting so many local traditions and people. It warms my heart to see people doing things to keep traditions going. It helps me find the good in humanity when this is hard to do.
That was wonderful! I remember a Christmas parade in Amalfi many years ago now. From the church on the hill we watched the procession down the hill and it was magnificent. It seemed like the whole town came out and with the lights and decorations it was heavenly.
Ok I have a complaint, I am getting spoiled and getting used to these vlogmas, so what will happen when this ends...it will be a bad feeling! 😟....😂😂😂 thanks for these wonderful treats! 💕
No need to complain. Enjoy being spoiled and then savor these wonderful vlogs again and again as often as you like. How rich are these vlogs, Nicki and Carlo! Thank you for sharing the beauty and the culture of Italy (food, music, fashion, architecture, the landscapes, the people - such artisans). Have a blessed Christ-mas! Love from California.
Keep them running from year to year....they are too great to put aside. The valley and mountains are so beautiful.
These daily videos are just massively amazing!!! We just LOVE them all……
Another very interesting vlog. It seems that many cultures have a form of bagpipe in their musical heritage, each a little different and perhaps nowadays some more refined, but the one constant in them is that they would all have been made with animal skin originally.
It does make sense that they were made with animals skin, historically. It would be really cool if they found something else that worked just as well or better, in the near future. That would be awesome :)
Love listening to how these traditions come about. Thank you for the lesson, loved the vlogmas
Nicki & Carlo, I thoroughly enjoy watching your videos and it bring such happiness. You have started a tradition where me and my dad sit down to watch each video together. Thank you for all of the time & effort you have put into doing vlogmas for everyone, it is really appreciated ❤️
These videos are very much appreciated and love learning about traditions and life in Italy. Love the simplicity of life and down to Earth people who love and take care of the land and people.
Wow…that gets me in the Christmas spirit! I loved the music…such nice guys to be willing to share their talents with us. I love the sounds of the beautiful traditional music of the area. So interesting and entertaining! Thank you for sharing with us today!❤️
Love finding out about the locals and all their stories. Makes us feel like we are really part of an Italian community.
Keep up the great job😀❤️🇮🇹
This is what we are all craving right now. A real human connection. Authenticity. Laughter. A song. Some music. Great storytelling here Niki and Carlo.
Everyday I watch and feel the warmth of the people, the charm, simplicity of their lives and it makes me feel so good. My heart is glowing like the flames in that fireplace and I don’t want the Video to end ❤️🌲❤️
It’s so fascinating to watch this ancient musical instruments. Being a musician myself, it’s definitely an eye opener to learn such intriguing instruments. Thank You for the wonderful episode and enjoy your trip.
Oh Nicki Darlin’, this is my FAVORITE video you’ve ever produced❣️❣️❣️. I ADORE learning about the folk traditions and most of all the music! Thank you for taking the time & the long drive to share this with us💛🧡❤️
Thoroughly enjoyed this vlog. Its just so refreshing how everyone in your videos is so relaxed and themselves. No fake posing and preening for the camera. Wonderful, just wonderful. Thank you Nicki and Carlo.
Wow fascinating selection of instruments. The one made of goatskin defiinitely sounds better than bagpipes! Thankyou for such an interesting vlog Nicki and Carlo.
That was so lovely , thank you Nickie and Carlo.
Really appreciate your vlogmas videos. Loved the sound of the ancient instruments.
I don’t think Holly was impressed though 😂
What a wonderful treat for St. Nicholas Day! That field trip up to Tramonti was absolutely captivating, that area is just full of fascinating folkways & traditions. Thank you!!! (More stuff like this please!)
Vlogmas is making this Christmas season a most delightful one. Thank you.
That was so interesting to see the old traditions played so beautifully... you have hidden talents Nicki .. excellent percussion 👌xxx
Love this vlog. Reminded me of my mum singing Italian Christmas songs xx
Oh my...I thoroughly enjoyed this Vlogmas episode. Thank you so much!! 😍
Bagpipes in Italy, too! Other similarities: "The Zampognari (shepherds) leave on 29 Nov. and until 8 Dec., play the music of the Immaculate Conception," and Hanukkah which is celebrated this year from 28 No. to 8 Dec. commemorates the Jewish revolt against Hellenization/worship of Greek gods, BC. There are so many similar threads in western traditions as this video shows. Thanks Nicki & Carlos for tastefully exploring Italy's ancient culture by delving underneath the surface of its beauty and the people. Another winner!
Carlo & Nicki, this was really, really interesting and I thoroughly enjoyed - AWESOME stuff! Thank you!
Every day another meraviglia. I've seen the zampognari play their traditional songs here in New York. I'm so happy to see that the young people are interested in keeping up tradition. Grazie Niki and Carlo for another super video.
Absolutely wonderful video…Italy, the traditions, the people….all beautiful 💕💕💕💕
Fascinating. Thank you. Each day is better than the previous.
Thank you for such an interesting vlog! The ancient traditions are fascinating and it lovely to see men carrying on these traditions. Thank you for sharing this with us.
I love that they are keeping this tradition going and teaching lessons! I have seen the pigskin instrument but I can’t remember where or when. Another lovely and interesting vlogmas video. Thank you so much 😊 🎹
I loved this! My mom is from Germany and she played the accordion when she was younger ( squeeze box?) I will have to ask her about it this afternoon when I go over to her house❤️ She’s 89
Your vlogmas series is such fun, really interesting and hugely entertaining. I have to admit that I find some (most) of the advent vlogs fail miserably...your's is a breath of fresh air!
Nicki and Carlos.....thank you for the absolutely beautiful Christmas vlogs!! ✨🎄✨
I love that you take me to wonderful places that I wouldn't see if not for you! 😊💖
Today's vlog was outstanding!! 👏🎶👏🎶👏
Bagpipes were played by the Romans, and while we think of them now as Scottish, they were widely popular across Europe until the middle ages. They're a fascinating instrument, thank you for doing this video!
I smiled all the way through this! I adore these traditions and that they are still carried out.💕
This so amazing ! to see these little glimpses into life we would never ever get to see ….real Italy , how fun ! Thank you
Love all the traditional instruments I’m sure I was an Italian in a past life thank you Niki & Carlo 💕💕🥰
Wow! This foray into musical instruments and history was so interesting!
Loved this,, I love how everyone has a story to tell, just amazing, it’s great they want to share 😊
Each day I'm taken back to a wonderful time as a child. My dad played the accordion...that made me cry! Thank you..Love u guys!!!!!! ❤🍁🇮🇪
This is getting more and more interesting, thanks for showing us not only Positano, but so much more. Keep it on going. I love 💕 it, and many more people, too!!!!
Really enjoyed another festive video. I feel like your Christmas videos are the 12 days of Christmas surprises. Love!Love! And, of course! Holly is always the star. Love, little Holly❤️
Ha! I took accordion lessons as a little girl. While all friends were learning the piano or flute there I was with this huge accordion. After watching this, I get why my Dad insisted on it and this was such a sweet reminder of that time. I’m sure my Dad is smiling from the Heavens seeing me enjoying the sounds of your video! Thanks Nikki and Carlo and musicians! 💕💕
What two amazing musicians, thank you for show casing such authentic Italian talent !!!!
That original music speaks tradition and history. The sound takes you places. Thank you for exposing a forgotten heritage. Beautiful episode.
Love this episode of vlogmass. You're showing us traditions I've never seen before. Thank you.
zampognare is such beautiful
music … the energy of all napoletano music evokes strong emotions
Nicki this was such an interesting, informative and fun segment. The musicians playing and singing are fantastic. The history of the regional music for 9 days before Natalie door to door brought back fond memories. As a child Carolers would go door to door singing Christmas Carol's (usa) shortly before Christmas and some Christmas Eve. The Traditions of ITALIA and the people sharing their joy makes my day. The history of the tambourine 2000 yrs old in a fresco and bagpipes made of goat skin.👍 Loved this video with chuckle when Holly began to play with the goat skin. 🐐....Nicki and Carlo you did a lovely job explaining things. The accordion & song was really fun as well as the bagpipes... THANK THE MUSICIANS FOR ME - YOU ALL WERE GREAT.
That was really interesting. I think it is so important that traditions are kept alive.
Niki how beautiful this video was. What a long history of this place you get to be a part of. These moments of music and tradition we can store away in our memory and revisit on dark days. The genuineness of the people and pride was palpable.
Fascinating. The music from the goat bladder pipes had almost a Turkish or Moroccan influence. The multi-reeded pipes were not only exquisitely beautiful to look at, but the sound!!! Wonderful -- thank you for finding these treasures Nikki and Carlo ♡
That was fascinating! I love learning about different customs and traditions. Brava, Nicki on your horn solo-you played beautifully!
Fascinating insights - what a rich culture and appreciation for history and traditions. Thank you for sharing these experiences : - ) xx
This was absolutely fascinating!! I thought I was in Scotland for a bit there. How did 2 cultures (Scottish and Italian) so far apart geographically, develop a style of music and instruments so similiar? Nicki, you have captured a tradition that is never really shown on travelogues and it makes one feel special to have a front row seat for this performance. Thank you so very much for bringing this to your viewers. Surely no one will be crass enough to mention use of the goatskin.
Hi, I'm Carlo, I don't know, but someone who commented a few minutes ago wrote this:😘

@@NickiPositano Don't forget that the Romans concurred the Celts by taking Gaul around 55BC. The Romans controlled the British Isles for close to 400 years.
How incredible ! I have just watched a Catholic mass for the Immaculate Conception this evening which is the last day of the novena of which these musicians spoke. Really loved this vlog. For obvious reasons, we have very similar folk music in the Provence region of France near the French/Italian border & also in Corsica. It was fascinating to hear the history behind the instruments & customs. Merci for this. Bisous from French Catalonia.
Thank you for sharing some of the traditions and history of Italy at Christmas time. I have really enjoyed it. And I enjoy seeing your Husband and Holly in the videos!
Thank you for sharing this compelling history. How wonderful these talented musicians are continuing these ancient arts.
Nicki and Carlo, this is what makes your videos so wonderful.. showing the true Italy. The pride in your friends' faces in sharing their musical traditions is genuine and heartwarming. Loved this so much. Grazie. ❤️

Never know what we will get. So interesting Nicki. You did really well on the recorder. I have one that I loved to play. And bagpipes, who knew this was played in Italy. Hope the tradition never ends. Holly didn't look too happy😘 On to next adventure.
I so enjoy learning all about the different Italian traditions and culture. This was so interesting.
I just love the accents! Such wonderful traditions. The talent of making the instruments are wonderful. Just beautiful.
Living in New Zealand 🇳🇿 what a lifting of your spirits, musical item. History of the

Positano no doubt, spectacular food & family friends pets and all. Nice one
Love the traditional singing ….♥️♥️ Just a fabulous Christmas tradition…
I really enjoyed this. It brought back many happy memories of kitchen parties my parents had in our home when I was a child. Thank you for bringing these memories back
Gracias Nicki y Carlos por mostrar lo autentico de sus tradiciones, gente sencilla de Italia
I got all nostalgic for castagne when I got glimpses of the metal chestnut pan hanging by the fireplace- we’re in cherry season in Australia now, a bit different! Great video, thanks!
I can imagine Italians in the past centuries being entertained by this music. Ten thumbs up.😊
A virtual tour into the regions history everyday! Our very own tour guides ! Greatly appreciate the time and effort you and Carlo put into these vlogs to share with us! Love your
hand made jersey and the colour. 😍 Those 🧺 are simply gorgeous!
Tu scendi dalle le stelle..... oh yes please, the most precious memories of my grandmother long ago that sang her heart out when she sang that song !!! Thank you

Thank you Nicky & Carlo, these are the special moments. Bravo !!!!❤️❤️❤️
I really enjoyed listening to these gentlemen making joyful music with primitive instruments.
Yes. A basketry/basket-weaving tutorial with Isidore would be lovely.
I really enjoyed this Vlogmas post and was sorry when it ended . This also revealed yet more of your secret talents . I did have a laugh at dear Holly , she didn’t look too excited by the visit , curled into a pitiful little ball with a long suffering look on her face . Sending much love and cuddles to her .
