It's finally time. Crisis Core Reunion is out and while many adore its story and characters, I occasionally see folks claiming it's overrated. There is no better time than now to investigate this prequel and see if it truly is as good as the people say... (it is lol)

I didn’t play FF7 before Crisis Core. I didn’t know Zack’s fate. This was the first game to make me cry for a fictional character.
Me too man, I was completely unaware of FF7 so I never saw that ending coming. I remember crying and being emotionally affected for a while after completing it. I also remember that when I first played the "true" FF7 (as a sequel to Crisis Core), I was so confused with Cloud behavior and fake ass backstory, I was screaming at my screen "THAT DOESN'T MAKE ANY SENSE YOU'RE NOT ZACK"
@@brieuxbayot6823 and then? What you felt after FF7 finally showed Zack etc.
Next try nier automata. And cry over big booty androids
@@merciless972 I played the prolong/first chapter. It was very touching.
I knew his fate and I still got all teary eyed lmao
You probably won’t see this but after a long day of photography and editing and being in a studio for artists all day long I come to my bed and get ready to feed myself another awesome episode of retro rebound! This IS my gaming fix outside the real world

Literally my all time favorite PSP game. Was trying to find it online for awhile and then it was announced for current gen. Made my year.
Yo same
I have the psp version and ps5 remake/remaster, now if only I could find a psp
PPSSPP and torrent sites are your friends. The latter, especially during the golden age of PSP modding in the late 2000s and early 2010s, was a godsend, and it still is now! Seriously, I get wanting to have physical games for the shit you currently own, but I remember being a broke middle school kid whose parents HATED paying for video games. Like... once you get your fix that young, it's like why would you ever wanna go back?
@@tehandroidmaster it’s how I got the original as a kid. Was having a rough time trying to find a safe torrent.
The box Art and game manual are awesome. I wish we could stay physical forever. Missing those days
It wasn't that long ago (PS3) that physical games came with beautiful boxes and manual. I see the manuals for FFXIII and XIII-2 and those are just so good, they got so lazy for ps4...
The art is so good and agree team physical
I haven't upgraded my system past the 360. My roommate out in AZ had the One when it came out and I found it so disheartening that I had to download the game to my system when I had a physical copy of the game.
Just don’t buy digital.
Man as a kid I dreamed for this! Different kinda nostalgia hitting right now.
I’ve really soured on Nomura with how KH turned out. The original FF7 is the only game in that franchise according to my head canon. But I’m glad so many people are enjoying it!
The dialogue in this game kills me lmfao. They seriously should've tweaked the script here and there to make it less laughably awkward.
Picked this up on the oled switch and I'm having a blast. Actually pulled me away from MW2 and Ragnorok on my ps5. I just wanna get back on it. And tomorrow the witcher 3 gets the next Gen upgrade. (Chef's kiss). What a time to be alive. Next year is going down in history man. Dead space, RE4, Silent Hill, Diablo, FF16, zelda tears of the kingdom, FF Rebirth. And that's just what I know of. Gaming is off the hook right now.
I have a huge connection to this game. I played this game when I was high school and I had a lot of episodes of depression and anxiety. I was sports guy and great at it, but this game was something I always looked forward to playing in my travels for sports and even when I was at home.
I honestly can't wait to pick this up and have a heavy cry, because this game was my game.
One of my fav psp games. This looks way better than I remember it. Might pick up the remaster for nostalgic reasons.
I agree with it being more fit for the switch than the main consoles (not to say not to play them on those) but for me it makes more sense since it was originally on the psp. Can’t wait to replay it again after all these years though.
I grew up with this game so it's nostalgic for me, i love it and i will definitely get the remaster tomorrow :) (i still have my original PSP copy from 2008)
Same here my dude!!! PSP Crisis Core is the ONLY game where I ever 100% and defeated Minerva!!!
Same - I love my psp to this day
Great video!! This game was a freaking MASTERPIECE! Love that it’s finally getting the remaster it deserves!! I will 100% be picking this up for the Switch!
This'll be my first time playing it!
I played the original FF7 many years ago, adored it, and I thought they absolutely nailed the remake, which was my personal GOTY when it came out. I love that they're playing with fan expectations and re-imagining the series rather than dryly remaking it, but it seems more important than ever to know what happened in Crisis Core considering the direction the main remake project is headed.
It looks like Crisis Core is getting a straight remaster with little story changes, so very excited to get the full backstory on Zack. Great timing, too, as something to tide us over till Remake Part 2.
Strongly disagree. Saw FF7 when it released, made me want a ps1. 1st game that ever had me max out the timer and keep going. I loved the story, the gameplay, the characters, and most everything about it.
The "remake" isn't a remake. I won't go into spoilers incase someone hasn't played/doesn't know. Most of the events (not counting areas that are expanded upon) never took place in the original. The big "twist" at the end states the event of the original game happened. If anything it's a padded out sequel with mostly mundane side quests and mediocre hack'n slash combat. It does however have amazing graphics. I'll give it that.
I would have preferred an actual remake (with the turn-based gameplay intact) that didn't completely change the game. They lied through their teeth by putting "remake" in the title. I don't know about anyone else but someone lying to me tends to piss me off.
@@evildeadfan420ify Could not disagree more.
The combat felt nice and tactical, and was not focused on hack'n'slash gameplay. Even the side quests were fun challenges, and what they lacked in story content they made up for in gameplay. This is subjective, so your experience is entirely your own, but to me it was some of the most fun I've had in a real time combat system like this.
It's definitely not a remake, that is true. But I don't feel lied to at all -- the combat system is entirely different, and it expands on original's worldbuilding. It was never a proper "remake" to begin with. I did not expect the story to go off in another direction, but I embrace it. It's exciting. Definitely a lot more thought and effort put into this than a 1:1 remake would have, and I appreciate it for what it is.
I think it comes down to that. If you expected a 1:1 remake, this isn't it. If you're not caught up on that fact, I think the project is very enjoyable. Obviously just personal opinion, but my brother and some of my friends enjoyed it so much that they were compelled to go back and play the original and enjoy both experiences.
Might not be your personal cup of tea, and that's fair too.
Harsha Mohite I can actually respect that view although I disagree with some of the things in your response. The side quests were God awful. I remember one of the early ones that had you hunting some small time monster. Gave off the cliche cringe early quests from an mmo (go yonder and kill x number of enemy and return) and it had a reward that felt like a complete waste of time. Seriously, I received more Gil from the enemies in the quest than from the quest and got a potion...
The ridiculous amount of padding is another gripe I have. They turned a 3 hour portion of the game into a 30-ish hour experience. Heck, they made the trip from Aerith's house to wall market (originally not even 3 minutes WITH encounters) into a 45 minute segment with stranger-danger robbers. And they turned an enemy that was a random encounter into full boss fight...
I definitely felt lied to given that "Remake" is in the title and they said they were making *some* changes, not completely altering the storyline. How could you not feel lied to?
It is at least a good to hear that your brother wanted to play the original to experience that. I personally have many fond memories of it myself.
I remember buying this game in the summer of 2008 for my beloved PSP. Me and a friend of mine had never played FFVII (he still hasn’t lol), but me at least, I knew who Cloud was. This game will show us how he gets that badass sword, right? We were SO into this game. The graphics, the combat, everything just clicked. Good times!
I just picked up Crisis Core Reunion for my Switch and I’m ready to relive those summer days of old! Hype!
I remember hearing they were making a FF7 game on PSP and I was a huge fan of FF7 at the time so I was so excited. Then Criss Core came out and it held up and was AMAZING, especially the cutscenes. The game gave us more Sephiroth goodness and it did not let down. The only downside was it was a PSP game and was stuck on that system forever, until now. Just ordered it last night on Amazon and showed up to my door at 5am overnight! I'm so looking forward to playing this before I play Rebirth!
One of my top psp action JRPGs for sure. I found Zach way more likeable than Cloud ironically.
I love the leaping from the train cut scene call back to the originals intro too that was my first woohoo moment back then.
Such an amazing story for the most part, it arrives today so i can’t wait to get stuck back into it
I think it's a terrible story that makes the OG 7 worse.
Ehh the story is ok.
I cannot wait to play through this game again
I would say it kinda is as impactful as the Original FF7 this was suppose to be a spinoff game on a handheld device but yet it made Zack so popular that he Ranked higher than a lot of other FF characters in other games to the point where he is as Popular as cloud who is the most popular FF character, how did that happen? And now they are involving this Character in the Remake FF7 because he became so popular he would have never been in it if Crisis Core wasn’t as Impactful as the original 7
Genesis ruined the Nibelheim Incident
Yeah. Dude really didn't need to be there at all. I will always appreciate Sephiroth's "You will rot" line though.
As far as portability goes, I actually preferred using my PSP component cables so I could hook up my PSP to my TV and play Crisis Core on the big screen. So, even though it would be cool to play it on the go with the Switch, it wasn't really difficult for me to decide to buy it for the PS5. Playing anything Final Fantasy VII related just feels right on Playstation. I can't wait for tomorrow.
Is the voice change kinda weird to anyone else? Not the fact it changed by that Zack is such an outwardly confident and charismatic character so that softer and quieter voice is kinda grating lol.
Yeah, im not a big fan of the new voice of Zack
Lot of people dislike his new voice. His new voice sounds odd
His new voice sucks lmao not emotion and he just sounds uninterested
Play it in Japanese
@@RetroSmoo But see that's the simple solution... but at the same time it's kinda gonna be jarring if I need to play all the FF remake games from now on in Japanese because of this butterfly effect just from something as inane as a voice change... although it isn't inane as this voice gives a bad name to Zacks everywhere and I should know.
I literally can't hear "The Price of Freedom" without getting a little emotional. People give the game shit for the Genesis/Loveless storyline, which admittedly, wasn't good....at all. But they absolutely nailed it when it mattered: Zack, Sephiroth, Cloud....hell, Angeal and Cisne were great original characters to this game! They threaded the needle of fun & wacky with serious & impactful really well (something that I feel they are doing on an even grander scale with Rebirth).
As someone who played ff7 as a kid. I'm glad all the remakes are bringing in new final fantasy fans. Try out final fantasy 9 when y'all get a chance.
Thank you I had no idea this remaster existed I will be getting this soon
Played it on the PSP over a decade ago and now I'll be playing it on switch. Fantastic
To much dips too enjoy. Planing to play on stem deck
@@labdadgameraponte8790 maybe. Other reviewers have said it's mostly stable at 30 fps. Steam deck would be nice to have eventually
While advocating for the Switch version as being a better choice for it's plug and play principle against console versions.. it's 30fps and 720p on the Switch if I'm not mistaken.
Me personally, I like my games to run at 60fps like they do on the current gen consoles.
Zack Fair is my favorite video game character of all time. I dipped my toes into Final Fantasy because of Kingdom Hearts. I dived into Final Fantasy because of Crisis Core. Thanks to KH:BBS being on the PSP, I got to try this great game.
Soo many people don’t want me to play this before the original
But I have no intention to play the original FF7 although I feel this game might give me a rough understanding about these characters that just exist in 7 remake
I’m only playing the remake trilogy but I think I’d have to play this to know zack and sephiroth
Even if remake is it’s own story
Ive never actually played this game but i watched clips of it a few years back and now ive watched through the game on youtube 4 times! Zack is my favorite videogame character and i hope others get to enjoy the story of this game as well
I hope you get to play it lol

15:45 this was spot on.
I played on the PS4, and pro tip... take breaks. Seriously.
OR, put a video on your phone and turn off your mind ;)
My biggest gripe with the game was the breaks in combat all separated by activating combat mode
Anybody else notice the UMD didn’t have the legit casing? Did Matty even mention it or did I miss something?
I never played FF7 before Crisis Core either. Great game, I loved it on PSP. I like playing it handheld as well so I just bought it on sale on Steam. I now get to play it again flawlessly on my Steam deck. A awesome experience.
I'm getting this on switch purely for its portability.
Absolutely yes, I don’t even need to watch to know the answer. “This game is alittle more important than my Sword”
This is amazing on Steam Deck! As you mentioned portability really unlocks the fun factor for this game.
anyone who doesn't like crisis core is an actual hater. zack is my fave character in the whole ff7 series when he just gets a short game. they really did an amazing job making you fall for him and make you feel what it was like to be inspired by zack like the other characters effected by him. even as a woman, he was a big inspiration to me as a child. it's unfortunate he just isn't as impactful with the new voice actor, but still love him nonetheless and i believe to be the most underrated character despite being the reason the whole ffvii story exists.
Loved this game, so looking forward to picking this up later! Still have the original, not sure if it was UK-only but we also got the artbook in the thick cardboard box :)
This game got me into final fantasy and i think it’s phenomenal.
Zack > Cloud.
Yes, it really exceeds expectations for a handheld system. Great story.
One thing I really like about this story that often gets overlooked is LOVELESS' connection to both Crisis Core and FF7 proper's overall stories. The 'battle of beasts at the end of the world' is the struggle between Cloud, a Shinra created 'monster', and "Sephiroth", who is actually Jenova. The 'spreading light and dark wings' are obvious and very literal in Crisis Core, but in FF7 I also think it refers to the failed Project S subjects [this guy are sick/"reunion" guys] traveling north to the crater, and AVALANCHE's influence and positive impact on people's lives spreading across Gaia. The 'gift of the goddess rising up' in Crisis Core is Minerva's revelation to Genesis of the existence of the Lifestream, and in FF7, the gift is Aerith's Holy Materia, which, upon use, causes the Lifestream to literally rise up out of the ground and stop Meteorfall from completing and destroying Gaia. So in both interpretations, the gift IS the Lifestream.
LOVELESS is frequently referred to throughout Crisis Core as an incomplete ancient work, missing it's last act- think The Epic of Gilgamesh or Homer's many lost epic poems- but the game overall strongly suggests the poem is actually a *prophecy* about the events that unfold in FF7 and Compilation.
LOVELESS even seems to link into the FF7R trilogy [keep in mind I made this comment before Rebirth released so I could be wrong], with Aerith's knowledge of the future and her own death connecting to the quotes 'Even if the morrow is barren of promises/Nothing shall forestall my return' and 'Of course... I'll come back to you. Even if you don't promise to wait. I'll return knowing you'll be here', from LOVELESS Act V. She KNOWS everything already and KNOWS how things played out in FF7 and Compilation. With LOVELESS having a performance at The Golden Saucer in Rebirth, this seems even more likely to be true. After the elimination of the Whispers at the end of FF7 Remake, LOVELESS' prophecy seemingly no longer applies, an in-universe "breaking of the narrative" in the same way FF7 Remake breaks FF7's story. I'd be surprised if some crazy shit doesn't go down during the performance at the park, ESPECIALLY with Aerith singing.
I have a PS5 and portability isn’t an issue for me since I can use Remote Play and have the Backbone PlayStation Edition if I want to play on the go or just wanna relax in my bed and play. (:
(Honestly I think Remote Play is my favorite thing to use when I just want to play the Missions 😂 and yes for those who don’t know Remote Play works even when you’re away from home even with LTE/5G you just have to leave your console on Rest Mode while you’re away from home *NEVER ON POWER OFF*)
I think ill get it for the steam deck when it's discounted. Seems perfect for that system and I like the option to play on a monitor or tv
Same. Though part of me wants to get it immediately since I only ever played the original briefly as a kid. Because it wasn’t turn based like the older final fantasies I didn’t like it. Now I can go into it older knowing I will enjoy it.
@@dylangirard4670 it is tempting to get it right away. It's hard fire to justify because of my backlog but I'm sure it's worth it
@@CurtTheHero I feel the same way. When I look at a full price game especially on steam, I think about how I could just knock a few games out of my backlog and be entertained for a while and then by that point it would likely be discounted anyway.
@@CurtTheHero Finished Nier Automata yesterday just so I could be ready for this. Backlog no more. This was my first FF game played in my cousins psp, so it’s only fair I go back by getting it in switch, as much as I’d love to max it out on pc.

I believe that Crisis core and 15 is the only FF games I managed to finish. I don't know why, if it was easy to pick up and play or something. But knowing what happened in the OG Crisis core I got the "oh that's how..." feeling. Now I just wonder how square Enix is going to remake CC considering how the FF7 was remade.
So what’s the deal with the whole Gackt/Genesis situation? I remember hearing different things, like he owns the character or Square Enix didn’t want anything to do with him? Has this all been resolved now?
Such a good question!
yup he returned to voice genesis for this
I think it was regards a sec scandal that square had to move away from him. I don't remember the story it's been over 10 years
Theres no way in hell this game is just as good as OG FF7; Cmon...
You'd be surprised how many people say this. 🙄
I’ve never played a FF game but I saw this in the latest Nintendo Direct and the gameplay looked great, the game looks gorgeous as well…I’ve been waiting for a game like this…should I play it? I probably will anyways
It's one of the best imo but if u play it u should play ff7 too since it's following the same story
@@ShundaeDreams I was planning on playing FF7 and then the remake at some point for sure
Glad this is on Switch and Xbox. Unlike FF7 Remake I might actually play and finish this one. I try to play my PS4 but I legit just cannot pick up that controller every day. Maybe my charging stand killed the batteries on my controllers, but I have so much experience of just picking up my plugged in controllers only for them to die within the hour that I pretty much stopped using that console altogether. It's a blu-ray box for me and maybe a handful of other games. Having more options with this one means I'm finally gonna actually play through a Final Fantasy.
Now if we could just see Chrono Trigger brought forward with all of the DS updates, with or without the 3D update like Trials of Mana got. Personally, I think the Live a Live HD2D treatment would bring that one forward perfectly for me. Then I would be satisfied with my retro games on modern consoles. At least satisfied enough
Square Enix is hookin' it up on Switch this winter... So Happy.
Already took off work just to play Reunion. Can't wait to 100% this greatness again!
I was going through the lack of FF7 remaster on Xbox sadness yesterday, and I saw that this was available. I saw the combat on a video and I was like WOAH. I’m excited to check it out. After I finish chrono trigger for the first time.
I got it on switch so I can do the sidequests while I take a shit...... 😆 🤣 😂 😹
Just started playing Crisis Core Reunion, didn't play the OG.
I don't quite like the overdone particle effects when striking enemies. Really distracts when there are multiple enemies to deal with.
I really want to get into FF, yet i dont want to the original FF7, the graphics just doesn’t held up as good as the pixel art versions.
Would you recommend playing crisis core before FF7 Remake?
I would recommend playing the OG before playing any of the compilations as the events of the original game are canon to the remake.
Also the remake isn't really a remake but a "remake"/sequel. You'd be doing yourself a HUGE disservice just going into the newer games as they kind of distort the story a bit.
@@Fade2BlackSS Hugely distort the story
@@glenmcl Agreed.
I’ll try to play the original, or maybe watch someone play it.
Its tough not growing up with the original 🥲
I wish I could just recommend the remake to you as a starting point as thats what it should've been all along. Unfortunately the devs weren't satisfied with doing that and instead "remake" ends up being more of a sequel that will repeatedly acknowledge the events of the original games as if they already happened once before. Think of Remake as a 2nd timeline.
This is why many people will still recommend you play the original first. Regardless of which you choose, Remake or the original, I personally would not recommend Crisis Core as your starting point. The game expects you to be somewhat familiar with the original story and spoils a major reveal from it.
It really is. I'm enjoying it so much. Absolutely gorgeous game and such addictive gameplay. You just don't see games like this anymore
I want 4k with 60 fps and trophy support. Which is why I got ps5 edition.
It was fun on the PSP. I'm glad it's no longer stranded there.
I’m still playing Trails from Zero… at the KeA chapter. How do y’all play so many games so fast? By the time I finish Zero, Azure will be out. I’m never going to play all the RPGs I want

I’ve been enjoying it a little more than FF7 remake and I didn’t think that would happen at all. Cloud is my boy but I’m definitely starting to take a liking to Zack
I’m playing on steamdeck it’s incredible
This was the first final fantasy I played, still the only game that’s made me cry, and one of the greatest video game ending of all time
Bro I pre-ordered my copy back when it was first announced and I just got a message today saying my copy will be delayed until the 15th bruh.
The end of this game ruined me. Doubly so if you listen to the end in the Japanese voice with English sub. Clouds scream still gets me
Commenting before watching: YES. It is that good. Go play it.
I'm looking forward to this game so much! I have my old PSP copy but I am getting a Switch and Xbox copy of Reunion. I can't wait to play it
I never finished the original but I like the remake so far.
I just beat this two weeks ago. It was kinda ass and I really don't know what you see in this game.
The only thing it did was make Cloud look even more of an unbelievable protagonist come FF7. Yes, it makes Zack awesome, but there just wasn't enough of Cloud and Zack outside of the scenes recreated from FF7.
All it did was spoon feed you the information revolving around Jenova, Nibelheim, and the changing of guard of the buster sword... TWICE.
Dumbapples, that f*cking scientist and how the mako infused soldiers were treated was sloppy.
I really hated this story, save for fleshing out Zack's story a little.
I never got to play through this. My psp died after I picked it up and never bought another psp. But I plan to pick it up on my steamdeck,
I think the Psp could have pulled off much closer graphics to the Switch version, because it's a short game for one thing with only one playable character,, I would not put it past Squenix to purposely nerf their graphics on FF games in the Ps2, and Psp days to make ps3 graphics look better than Ps2, games like Metal gear solid sequals, and Silent hill 2, and 3 looked better than the FF games on Ps2, for pretty much no other reason than Squenix probably purposely nerfed the graphics on those games. Anyways yeah, I got both copies being the FFVII fan that I am.
Was planning on getting this game on PC for my Steam Deck but i think i rather get the physical copy and play it on the switch
This game is/was absolutely amazing.
Please wear those glasses in your videos :o
Nah the portability doesn't really make a difference for me. Honestly, even when I do get a game on Switch, I always play it docked. I'd prioritize graphics and framerate over portability any day.
Not sure the best place to say this but I want to hear your thoughts on Chained Echoes. It's so good!
Still wish we got the original voice actors or at least an option to use them.
probably the game i played most on my PSP, hopefully i can get all the genji armor this time around.....
Day 1 of me asking for Matty to cover Yakuza/Like a Dragon.
Less than 2 hours until I get to play this. ON PS5!
I don’t need to watch a 17:00 minute long video. The answer is yes.
We are going to explain the obsession of today with the old games or the so-called retro classic makes the majority see that they are good when in reality it is not... the company knows it and uses that to recreate the past again and take advantage of it again to the business this creates a market for easy money and less work... just like the lack of new ideas to create new games... in other words if the original version is not good don't expect the new version to be...
You should look at Tactics Ogre Reborn. Game is so sick.
Is AG1 kosher?
Was the gameplay we were watching recorded on your switch?
Atleast this is a 1 to 1 remaster. After the sequel/remake that is the ff7 remake.
Rocked.
I still have on psp and have ps5 version otw. So stoked
I hear your switch argument but it's better on steam deck
it always hits just right
Really enjoyed replaying Crisis Core even though I only just got it and played it (already knew the whole story honestly 🤷♂️) on PSP after playing FF7R on PS4 back in 2020... Still cried like a little bitch at the end when playing it on PS5 😭
Might pick up my PSP and replay it that way next now that the "Remaster" is fresh in my mind 👍
