- Power pop classic promo video, from 1979
Every time I see you, oh, I wish I could believe you
Do you ever mean a thing you say
You lied, I tried to overlook your careless way of love
And when you called I never turned you down
Too late, too late
Too late to see
Too late to let you run away
You're never serious, oh no, you're so impossible
I never understand the games you play
Was it me that changed you then, or was it someone older
Are you ever lonely now and then
Every time I see you I wish I didn't need you
Can you love or don't you even care
Too late, too late
Too late to see
Too late to let you run away
Too late, too late
Too late to see
Too late to let you run away
Ooh, I should have known you'd slip away
I grew up in Zion (on Elim Ave) and used to listen to SHOES practice in their little house off the alley when I was about 6 years old. Thanks for the memories, guys!
Cool story bro
Hi Brett, my grandparents (now dead) lived on Elim Ave in Zion and my aunt/uncle still do. I loved to visit my grandparents and go to the beach on Lake Michigan. I still remember that cool breeze from the lake.
So cool
I think they recorded Black Vinyl Shoes there.
The best American pop group ever. Vastly underrated and should have been much bigger. This was the song that got me hooked.
I'm 71, and I had their albums...
68 and the same
there is no such thing as a bad shoe song. no filler. all power pop. 100 % american.. god bless the shoes.
What are you on? There are some definite duds in their catalog.
The most perfect power pop album ever. I got to talk to both John and Jeff once after a show -- incredibly talented and incredibly nice. I'm glad they're still making music.
one of the best American power pop bands. The effortlessness here does nothing to detract from their genius.
Hell Yes Bro!
41 years ago and i still LOVE this song. present tense is one of the best power pop albums ever recorded.
This is a time capsule back to the days when MTV was significant. I used to catch these guys at least two or three times a day on there. Different songs too. Great band.
24th Video played on MTV great mix they were playing what a salute so random but brilliant it had in that great era even Vinyls and Tapes were doin re define at its finest Rare.Such a quick short song Power Base but blessed and part of the greatest decade of all time never to forget miss it so much oh hail the 80s
Shoes never 'stopped playing' they released albums all the way into the late 90's and now have a new studio album in 2012 called 'Ignition' which is getting great reviews.
My opinion: History will show that this band had the greatest difference between a) its talent and quality and b) its level of success. These are tremendous pop songs that will (already have) stand (stood) the test of time.
This is one of the best bands to have ever existed. Yet to my knowledge they do not make it onto any Top 100 / 500 best bands ever list. I am 67 years old and have been listening from the beginning. I have such a fond memory of buying their first album. I just can't remember why I picked it. They are so underrated they are brilliant song writers. I will have to stop here because there is no way to put into words how good they are.
so true
I was blown away by them at a show in early ‘79. The craft that went into those gorgeously simplistic pop songs.
Had them sign my present tense album at peaches record store in philly
One of the videos played during MTV's first 24 hours on the air was this one.
Man, this song is heartbreakingly beautiful.
"I should have known you'd slip away" kills me every time.
Shoes and 20/20 both fantastic bands from back then. One night was heading to a bar in Wisconsin with my buddy and just after crossing the border we saw the sign out front of the Rocket North saying "Tonight - Shoes" and we did a quick turn around and flew into that lot. Glad we did since they didn't play out too much at that time.
I was so in love with the drummer....
Classic song from when MTV was great. Underrated band.
Love this band and this song. Memories. The singer has the best haircut ever! Love that shaggy look.
Shoes. Completely completely underrated. A band that captured the early 80’s. MTV!!! Us 55 year olds loved this band.
Gorgeous harmonies. Jangly guitars. Power pop. When MTV ruled and actually played music videos. Was introduced to many great bands I may have otherwise missed.
Absolutely. MTV back then was a tremendous music journey and education.
I must thank the vinyl community for making me aware of amazing groups like this thank you for music lovers like all of you for exposing underrated talent to music fans like myself
I remember going to the Thirsty Whale since dancing with the girl when the band was on stage she told me she was drive from Zion from Fern Hills come see the band we had so much fun that evening
24th video ever played on MTV
The Song is so quick and short power base deserves more extended, 12inch and remix u name it
This is the 24th video played on MTV on its first day. Played right after Lookin' For Clues by Robert Palmer & just before Stop Dragging My Heart Around by Stevie Nick's and Tom Petty.
I was just thirsty thirsty whales to listen to shoes I had a chance to dance with this girl on the Dance Floor and so much electricity the band is awesome and I wish I could go back and see this girl again
Present Tense got played on FM radio routinely in 1979-80,along with Nick Lowe Labour Of Lust and the various masterpieces of Elvis Costello,The Clash, etc. They certainly deserved the same success! Happily, everyone I mentioned is still working.
Almost
Powerful beat, great harmonies. This band had true potential!
If you are here you know greatness.
R.I.P. Skip. He was a "team player drummer"and i will always consider you as one of my favorite drummers.
Ken Chiodini of the Hate Bombs-Orlando, Fl.
They are still together and playing!! Great Power-Pop band!
Gary Klebe rules!
These guys really cranked out a pile of good tunes in a couple years. Love Shoes!
What a great posting. I've had this melody floating around in my head for 25 years since I last saw the video on MTV. Thanks for bringing it back to life.
Haven't heard this since '79! Thanks for reassuring me I wasn't just imagining it!
Not just "Power Pop"-this is PURE power pop. Thanks for posting it.
These guys were great. I wish they'd come down south and do a show or two.
Soooooo good! Those harmonies are to die for.
I STILL got the cassette! Not so sure it will play without destroying itself! LOL
The blueprint for DIY POWER POP. AWESOME!
Okay, before reading any of the comments or description, I just searched for Power Pop on You Tube. This is the first video I clicked on... so I guessed 1991 as the release date... I was blown away when i read 1979! Great tune!!
Sheer power pop genius Present Tense is their masterpiece great production stunning songs
Great voice underrated and was fantastic in his time
Forty + years later and this stuff still sounds fresh.
Brings back memories of a prior life; I bought the LP from a hip shop that coworker of mine turned me on to! I'll look through my archives and hopefully retrieve it.
finally i found Shoes on youtube still have the vinyl love this new wave band from Illinois much love for this band xoxoxo from CALIFORNIA
Great songs, great band! Sadly overlooked. If it wasn't for MTV I wouldn't have heard of them...
I guess I can’t blame my wife for still loving these guys!
this song is infectious
Songpop brought me here. Power Pop! 😊
One of the first videos I saw on MTV, back in 1981. I was 15 then.
58 now and still blast this song every weekend, while puffin' on a fatty, with a cold Beck's.
I had this album when I was in High School.Haven't heard this song since,Thank You!
Wow look at the Hamer guitars so freaking cool from Illinois natch
These guys were the first band that I saw on MTV that played all Hamer guitars. So cool
Thank you for posting this classic video! The first live concert I ever saw was Shoes at Chicagofest in 1978. I've been a fan since my dad gave me a copy of Black Vinyl Shoes that he got from his coworker, John Murphy. Dad tried to convince us that Shoes sounded like The Monkees but we knew better.
Shoes and DC Star at the Stardust....awesome time. All sorts of memories!!!
love the moody dream pop... a little like the 38 special style among others...great hook...I've also had this melody floating around for a while until lpstd1 posted it...thanks a mill for this rare nugget.
Sean Smithson brought me here ... first I'd heard of these guys. Very nice song!
"from the early days of MTV and the
Kings of Shoegazing rock."-🤔📻🇺🇲🌐..
Ageless, timeless p-pop-these dudes we're in a world of their own--it's still seductive the intelligent rock of that era, those hi-dollar NW Chicago suburbs--Athens, GA wasn't the only hidden talent pool back then.. Shoes Rules.
Back in high school days, this band was so good
The 20th video ever played on MTV.
The whole Present Tense album is perfect...wish I could by a decent cd somewhere.
The harmonies on the chorus are sublime
Those of us in Philly remember seeing their long form promo on PRISM. Offhand, I recall their explaination of the band's name, that the Beatles jokingly said that they otherwise would have called themselves the Shoes. That's why the name fits. The 60's through the 80's were a period where they went through trends/sounds every 2-3 years; bands like the Bangles, Los Lobos ,-- R.E.M. and so on were about unfinished business.
Super music from Illinos!
I saw them in May 1981 at the Zion ice arena. The Beatles of Zion.
those hooks.that harmony powerpop nirvana!
This spring/summer. It's called Ignition.
There's also a band bio set to drop around the same time. Boys Don't Lie.
That what I called power rock music.
Power Pop at it's best!
Excellent Power Pop Rocker!
Love the guitar driven real rock and roll! So many good groups and songs out there that must be stumbled upon and searched for as the music industry goes for the almighty dollar and not for talent and quality. Sorta like our govt.
what a shame these guys didn't keep playing. they were one of my fav bands in the late 70's.
they are still together, just doing producing and other things. occasional gig in the chicago area.
I listen to this band
This is an example of the power pop I love.
Awesome!!... Love Shoes...
Wow, I;m the next post after my own. Just would kill to have the singer's hair. I worked at a company and we represented them.
I love Shoes! I obsessed over these guys in the 80s. I am from Rochelle, Illinois - which is really close to their home base.
Question, does anyone remember a song that had a riff that sounded a lot like George Harrison's "What is Love"? I have been going through their videos online trying to find this song. Does anyone remember which one it is?
put on your dancin' Shoes!
Black Vinyl Shoes. The best produced (living room) power pop album in history.
Great song. Been looking for this for a while. Reminds me of the Raspberries.
God, I love this song! From Day One of MTV.
These shoes don’t suck.
1st time hearing this.
Unbelievably fantastic!
Damn these guys are great...Sheer Perfection!
Best haircut in all of music. even on a man today!!!
I loved the Shoes growing up and this was my favorite! They should have been bigger.Jeff Murphy went on to produce Material Issue-another great band.I've never seen this video before-very good!
A band from Chicago. Out of the clubs, B'Ginnings, Mother's, The Thirsty Whale, Haymaker's, Durty Nellie's. It's 1979 again.
Power Pop perfection !
Shoes rule. Period.
One of the bands that never quite made it, although I'm not sure why, they were a great band!
A great track! I have this album as well. I have been a fan of The Shoes for quite a few years. I had no idea until now that there was any video footage around, very cool!
@therealpattibowie I believe they are still playing but they don't work too hard. I saw them in a free show at the park here in Chicago. They were really good and really pumped up by the reception. I think they do occasional shows but that's it for live. I imagine they still write. I think I read two or three of the guys are involved in production.
studio version entered Billboard Nov 3, 1979 ..reached #75
Nice! I'll be looking out for David Bookings stuff! ✌🏻👍🏻👏🏻🇦🇺😃
been lookin for this. this is early mtv stuff
They are from Zion, IL where I am from.
Hmm. I don't remember seeing a lot of music like this (i.e., good) on mtv. Saw a lot of crap, some decent stuff, a few great things, but no Shoes (dammit!). This should have been a hit. So should many other Shoes songs.
