  • Tim Keller sermons via Gospel in Life: In the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus contrasts two groups who appear the same on the outside, but have different motives on the inside. Religious people are superficial, hiding behind the letter of the law; but people who are changed by the gospel are shining in the spirit of the law.

    Brilliant!
    I know I am a sinner saved by grace yet stuck with a certain amount of religiosity. Shall change with the confidence that God is my Father and He loves me very much.
    Appreciate how you put into words my inward struggle.

    The Sermon on the Mount describes what Jesus values and how such explicitly goes against what worldly people consider great; explains how Jesus's message is very different than any other religion along with how Christianity isn't based just on some moral criteria although such remain important; and makes it clear how Jesus has inaugurated a Kingdom of Heaven which believers are to be under rather than the world.
    The Kingdom of Heaven is something which is present as God is in control even though it may not seem that way. But Jesus will restore everything and we are to trust Him for such.
    Jesus affirms the main Jewish worldview and context yet affirms how many religious Jews have missed the main point along with how He has come to affirm the Law rather than throw it out. He points out how religious moralists have lost the meaning and Spirit of the Law along with how aristocrat hedonists have not accepted the necessary beliefs and worldviews. He comes across as offensive to both parties but also how they miss the main point always.
    He tells people how good works don't obligate God to provide anything along with how no one is entitled to anything ever. God never had to do anything even for someone or create anyone to begin with. Jesus makes this clear in the Parable of the Master and Servant in Luke 17, something that isn't spoken about much. This is where every true believer must begin with.

    Thank you for helping understand the difference between Christianity and religion.
    But that part about the father...it is possible to get disowned for being bad or disobedient. I know that’s not how God works, but it’s just an analogy that’s hard to relate to.

    Great! (The hymn at the end is not Newton, but Cowper.)

    Very powerful.
    Religion is self righteous and the essence of salvation is uplifting others I can’t help thinking that there are aspects to religion which are essential. The 10 commandments form the a backbone of religion because you have to obey the commands of God and if one sins repents and continually destroys then of what good is it. I believe your theology is rather 2 dimensional in communicating that religion is wrong . Perhaps one should say that we are saved through grace but we are responsible for our actions. After all Christ came to fulfill the law

      Nick Voutsas the story by John Bunyan “pilgrims progress” illustrates in a very powerful but simple way (chapter: hill of legality)how that “ backbone” can also easily paralyze and discourage us. Morality is needed, but we humans have a very comparing nature and are often inclined to become self righteous the more we follow and excel in the law. I believe Jesus knew that. It’s very mind boggling and I am still trying to find my way. I think if you know you are a sinner and repent before Jesus morality will come , if you change it around I’m not so sure.

    So, how do you oppose someone in love and good will? Help me understand this concept.

      speak truth, you have already set yourself up in the wrong position by saying you oppose someone, they oppose God, you simply speak truth.

      2 Timothy 2:24-25 King James Version (KJV)
      24 And the servant of the Lord must not strive; but be gentle unto all men, apt to teach, patient,
      25 In meekness instructing those that oppose themselves; if God peradventure will give them repentance to the acknowledging of the truth;

    Wait, didn't he get "horizontal" and "vertical" mixed up?
