Uncovering the Beauty of Romanesque Art in Saintonge

- Welcome to something a little different. Today we’ll be tackling a topic we personally love a lot: Romanesque architecture and art. During our holiday in the Saintonge we came across many churches decorated with beautiful sculptures. They were much more frequent and common than we expected. This gave us an idea: to feature as many of these beautiful buildings in one video covering the beautiful Romanesque ar(t)chitecture so prevalent in this region. We’ll show you some famous buildings, like the Abbaye aux Dames in Saintes, but also less famous churches like the one in Corme-Royal. Each of them is unique and each has a story to tell. In fact that was usually the goal: informing a largely illiterate population of the biblical stories and scaring them into following the true faith. Thanks for tagging along!

Which decorations impressed you the most?
Hello from Brazil ☕️. Fantastic video. Beautiful architecture. I loved it. It is historic.
Thanks a lot for watching ❤️
Thank-you for this informative video! The skill & quality of these ancient stone structures is incredible... I look forward to more!
Exactly, who'd think those "Dark Ages" would yield these treasures?
Loved the video & your explanation, Jente & Dries 😍
Thanks ❤️
Enjoyed the compilation of so many places in one video - nice way to learn. Loved the black band around the inside of some of the churches, thank you for showing that (and all that other details). Your explanations of why things are decorated in these ways, very much on point as usual. Cheers
Thanks a lot Ryan. We felt it was a special video as well
Subjective Arbitrary Romanesque Tour of 20. I loved what you showed and your explanations. I loved the church built on an old Roman Villa, but how dare they have the door to the Roman baths padlocked. It reminded me of when I lived in France. Thank you once again, indefatigable History Hikers!
Thanks for your excellent comments as always too. Yeah too bad of the padlock, but you can find photos online!
Beautiful stone work!
We'd love to have these decorations on our house!
Hey from New Zealand! Love seeing your travels ❤
Thanks for tagging along ❤️ greetings from Belgium 😄
Unique architecture 👍
Quite!
Epona and Bacchus? That's interesting how it had Gallic and Roman Gods together then...
Don't wipe out cultures, but integrate them in your society ❤️
Impressive 11th century cobwebs in the church at Thaims
Yeah, they had to do some impressive restoration work to get it just right!
On the facade of these churches of Saintonge and Poitou there is often a mysterious great statue of a man on a horse trodding over a smaller figure, which was visibly copied on Roman columns of Jupiter or figures of triumph over Roman enemies, but that scholars still can't really identify in a Christian context, hesitating between the emperor Constantine or Charlemagne, or Santiago.
That's awesome to know, thanks. I'm not sure if we noticed that figure ourselves when we were there.
