    I'll never understand fans that forget that actors are just people living their own lives too, not their property or whatever parasocial delusions they might have 😢 Fanservice can be soo cringey and I hate when it feels like they're forced to have any intimate moments, even if just friendly. 'OMG, they touched shoulders!' Sheesh.... Anyway, love these q&a's and congrats on POT! 🎾😊

      The actors and film makers do it as well. You see them purposely hanging all over each other without fans asking for it. that's because they want their product to be successful. You can't just blame the fans when the film makers understand the actors getting shipped helps make their movies or TV shows more successful. So they "show off" when in public for exactly that reason.

      I think it might be one of those chicken and the egg things. Maybe fans spotted a real spontaneous 'moment', reacted to it and that made people want to do fan service to generate a similar response. Or maybe fan-service came first.

      I agree here. I am gay and I find it cringey when fanservice gets too touchy and they are not interested and I can feel that. I don't know enough about BL actors but my experience with Kpop is similar when they played the pepero stick candy games or the use your mouths only to transfer this paper. It just feels off...

      But, I too, lived years without that 2 and sometimes am as surprised and am like "Seriously guys, you do realize that they do read and understand that?!" "I sometimes really don't want to know what our favourite Artists thinks what's going in the heads of their audiences!" It goes from "lol not wrong but did you have to put that online? Gonna be so embarrassing in xy time!" to "This now in the end is just delulu and 2nd hand embarrseement!" Granted, you speak from your own experience however I do believe that it gives us a great insight in the industry whose products we consume. I also appreciated that you mentioned the s. harassment that the actors are constantly being putting through since it quite often, feels way too out of control (my guess is that sometimes, some people, forget that you guys are human being that will see that specific comment!). 10:59 speaking as a bi person with some gender fluidity, at the core it is very simply a person loving another person. The differences are superficial and also come down to the individual. Gender is an aspect of a person but there are so many other factors. You don't love them because they're a girl or a guy, you love them for the person they are. When you describe the things about someone you love, many of those things won't be gender-specific, for some examples, a sense of humour, kindness, passion for art, dedication to their family or their business, shared values, adventurous, quiet... Anyone can be those things.

      @IrinNovy 11 місяців тому +14

      @@kristalclearly9777because it goes without saying. It's different for bi people since they are attracted to both genders but for straight or gay people it is the first thing, which is so basic that it doesn't need to be mentioned. You are just not gonna see any other characteristics in a romantic light otherwise. We form our first impressions of people in the first 10 seconds. We decide if we are attracted to them in that time too. So yeah, you notice a nice smile, a good sense of humor etc but it's always in regards to platonic or romantic feelings (friendships or sexual/romantic relationships).

    • @monazite5488
      @monazite5488 11 місяців тому +10

      This is all of course true, but I think most people are more skeptical about straight people playing gay roles because straight people won't ever fully understand the nuances of homophobia and discrimination that gay and LGBTQ+ people in general face, as well as just the complex identities they formed growing up that straight people just didn't experience and thus would kind of only gain some sort of understanding by talking to queer friends. Thus, people think straight people may not completely get the character their playing, which is a fair concern. However, when the characters someone's playing don't really deal with the complexities of a queer identity in a drama, as Perth's really haven't, then I think the concern about straight people playing them can be soothed since a straight actor could understand them more easily.

    I agree that recently actors have calmed down with the fanservice and I appreciate it a lot. As you've said some like it and some don't, I personally just like to see the cast getting along, including the lead couple but putting on an act for fans usually feels weird to me, especially because it creates such a problematic interaction between fans who do and the ones who don't like it meaning especially the ones that do like it also always "fall" for it in the sense that they throw big words like homophobia around whenever people tell them that it's in fact just fan service and that said actors have neither confirmed nor denied dating or even being into people of the same sex. As you've said, it's cool just taking it with a pinch of salt and having fun with it but unfortunately there will always be people reading way too much into it and genuinely believing these interactions to be true without there being any form of confirmation. But I feel like recently it has calmed down, everyone is just promoting their shows, having fun and getting along in a friendly way which is so fun to watch.

    At the beginning I did not know of fan service, so I thought everything is genuine and they are together in real life. 😂 But honestly, I’d rather there would be no fan service pressure at all. Fans have gone too crazy because of fan service. Going to the extent of hating specific actors because they broke the “couple” and decided to act in straight dramas only or couple with someone else. Some fans forget that actors just do their jobs at the end of the day. Or fans hating on the actor’s real life partners because of the show “couple”. This is just wrong. If I like an actor I like him or her for their talent and for how they portray a role. Some fans just want to dictate everything that the actor is doing in his or her life.

    Love that you pointed out the BL stories have become more complex. I think in the past the themes were quite repetitive and kind of one dimensional but now the stories have so much depth and character development and that’s been my favorite part of the evolution of BL. I’m also so so happy that GLs are becoming more of a thing because queer girls deserve representation too!! That being said regarding the comment about “mature content” I think it makes sense when it fits the story, but sometimes it does feel forced and when it’s forced it leaves a bad taste in my mouth. The great thing is that because there’s so many BLs you can really choose what fits your preferences, there’s plenty of soft and cute dramas and there’s plenty that have mature content as well (and by mature I mean not just sex but themes that include violence, trauma, etc).

  • @oneheart19
    @oneheart19 11 місяців тому +6

    Thank you for taking the time to talk with us and help us understand the BL industry a little more. I have a few thoughts to share as a BL fan.
    Fan Service - I find it confusing because sometimes it looks so real and come to find out it's "fake", so it leaves me with a not very good impression.
    Mature Content - I personally feel less is better than more about how explicit a scene really needs to be. Unless it truly fits the story in an authentic way. Most of the time a more tasteful thoughtful scene without everything being shown, is way more expressive and emotionally fulfilling as the viewer.
    Best of luck with your role in Japan!! PS - I visited Thailand this summer and watched your Thai language video first. Thank you for everything! ❤❤❤

    • @ukiss4ever7
      @ukiss4ever7 6 місяців тому

      Fan service is not always negative and is not always fake. Even normal people do fan service for a certain reason and level too. Fan service is made by an agreement from the actors of which level they want to show their fans, but those services are NOT always fake. You have to realize which is fake and which is genuine, but if you can't tell by facial expressions and action microscopes then you won't be able to differentiate it. You have to look at their facial expressions and body language, if you see their comfort of being around one another then they are genuine. But if you see stiff body language or slightly a face that aren't "real", then that means it's fan service. However, doing a fan service, both actors have to make an agreement.

Anyway for recent BL, it’s not just saturated, it’s over saturated so for me, it’s simple, any trailer than doesn’t catch my attention automatically gets pushed down and I wait and watch for stories which trailers catches me. Love what you're saying - around the thought that producers have about people wanting more mature content that you mentioned at 20:55, the truth is we as viewers may enjoy more mature content but we don't enjoy it if the acting quality and story isn't there. KinnPorsche was a great balance of an enthralling story, interesting characters, great acting, and intimate moments that made the viewer feel they were seeing people express love, looking behind the curtain. Always needs to be a balance. There are so many BLs that are basically softcore p*rn that the BL audiences collectively disavow as crap.

    I think context is everything for whether or not playing a different sexuality would be difficult to do. I have seen plenty of BLs where the setting doesn't have much (or even any) prejudice. In which case I agree that there's virtually no difference to playing a gay or straight character.
    But if the setting is more realistic, there is something to be said for how to approach a character that may have very different life experiences - being closeted, dealing with bigotry or even violence, internalized homophobia, self-hatred, shame, etc - and how that would affect their personality and ways expressing themselves. It's a different headspace to play a character that has to be constantly concerned with how others see them, being "found out", being stereotyped, etc.

    The thing about the sex sells (I know you covered it with "mature content" but let's call it what it is), it's true that having intimate scenes in a series makes people talk and even watch it. We've seen it with some series going viral beyong the BL community. Personally, I don't mind intimate scenes but sometimes it's quite obvious they're added just to "satisfy" a certain audience. I wish BL producers would focus more on writing complex characters and leave out these scenes that are just there to make people scream at their screens. Or rather implement them better into the story. There's a series currently airing that perfectly does that, it's a fun watch while also offering great plot and drama. It's all about being authentic while still making something fun or exciting.
    We've come a long way since those early BLs and at this point there's some really great stuff out there. I hope we'll continue to make good content and not add scenes without context just for one sole purpose

    I started watching bl in 2018, back then I watched basically anything I could get my hands on 😅, but for the last couple of years the quality of a lot of shows has dropped because there are now so many being produced. But the quality of the good ones has definitely improved since 2018, there is now a large variety of storylines and characters.
    I don’t really mind fan service but I don’t pay much attention to it, I prefer just to watch the drama, I do watch a lot of kpop fan service though so my views are a bit conflicted. I don’t like forced fan service, I am also not a fan of fan service that is portrayed as being real or ambiguous.

    I'm French and I've been watching BL for 2 years and fan service is something that makes me smile and for me it's fictional. but also uncomfortable because I find it very toxic for the actors. Unfortunately many no longer know the difference between the characters and the actors. The actors don't "belong to us" Even though I like to see pairings play again, sometimes changing pairings each time would perhaps avoid this.
    for Mature content, as long as it's not a BL with just sex scenes without a storyline that's no problem for me. Kinnporsche is the good example, having a mature BL the scenario is more accomplished and we have more complex characters. For me, in addition to university BL, nothing happens and I have the impression that the actors are restricted in their acting. They have to remain cute and at 25-30 years old they are no longer teenagers physically and it shows

    It's so interesting to hear about your perspective from a thai (bl) actor himself!
    I personally mostly dislike fanservice, especially when the actors are forced to do things they are not really comfortable with it, but do it bc they know the fans love it + their series get more recognition. Also, fake/pretend relationships are so awkward. I do love real life chemistry though, whether that's just because you are great friends, have a close bond, or in some cases, a more romantic connection. It's just nice seeing people work together and actually having fun together!
    11:21 "we are all going to die anyway" 😂 But seriously, I've always said this myself; as long as you are not hurting someone, just do whatever you want/makes you happy!

      I am rooting for natural chemistry only like you do but I think they've already got it that it's way much better and more successful that way so they created those workshops for actors to give them time to adjust and dig deeper in the connection they have. So it's happening. It's not so depressing if you think about it. Basically most actors have an intention of being really friendly, lovable and understanding of each other and it's not for the sake of money or fame, it's for genuine purposes. For us.

    I’m voicing out then: I don’t like fan service because I feel like although you can ship people healthily, many people cannot, then you have cases of it coming out that one person in the ship is dating someone else and they get death threats and harassment. Fan service definitely contributes to people’s feeling of entitlement inside a relationship they are not in. Like, when the Freen thing came out, I saw people going “oh, poor Becky, she’s heartbroken” and use that to justify being bad to Freen because she “hurt Becky”, as if she was cheating on her, but we have nothing to do with their personal lives and, let’s be real, most likely Becky was well aware of it always and never cared

    First: You're handsome!
    Second: About the "Understanding Love", I think that we can't define love as one exactly thing, considering that every experience of love is unique, crossed by the personal feelings and understandings of the parts, and that's exactly why a "straight love" is different of other types, even if is love anyway. I think this way because there will be social and cultural differences (like moral, mores, violence, acceptance) that will interfere the feelings that envolve this love and his parts, like a fear of show this love, the social coexistence with family, friends, and even the places that will be frequented. I don't know if I make me understanding.

    Regarding the "more mature content", I want more, for two reasons. I'm a little bit older than Perth and I'm not comfortable watching high school aged romances onscreen, regardless of the age of the actors. And by mature content, similar to what Perth said, I mean mature themes, adult storylines, adult interactions. The 🌶 content is great, and I want more of it, but I also want it to make sense and add to the overall story. Although, I don't know the age of, specifically GMMTV's, target audience. If their target demographic is ages 12-19 females, then yeah. I get the plethora of high school set shows.

    I feel like the fan service debacle can clearly divide fandom, and from what Ive noticed, international fans are the ones who don't need/want fan service, who don't care about it, while the Thai fans want it, sometimes even demand it. It seems to me like a lot of Thai fans can't distinguish between onscreen stuff and reality.

    • @mrsjennythomas

    • @ukiss4ever7
      @ukiss4ever7 6 місяців тому

      Actually, it's more about the age of the fans. Not all Thai fans want fan service, I mean, they do enjoy it at some certain levels but not all wants it. And like I said, it's about the age of the fans, younger fans seems less aware of fan service being part of the actor's job. The older fans are very aware of it, they can differentiate whether the pairing's relationship is real or fan service. They enjoy it at certain levels of fan service and some likes to joke with actors about the actors being in a relationship, it's a way of their joking and dream, that's all. Yes, they want their pairings to date for real but they also know the limits too. Younger fans are less aware.

    "I think sometimes thai culture can be a little bit less sensitive towards certain social issues." 03:18
    Agreed.
    Several things that are just insensitive and wrong are:
    1. The normalization of r@p€. I've seen soooooo many scenes where one guy would steal a kiss or even have s€xx with someone who's completely drunk or asleep. The concept of consent is not very much understood and it's frustrating.
    2. The romantization of toxic jealousy. This is so sad that many people find this cute or romantic whatsoever. There are countless scenes where a couple would fight because of unreasonable reasons that are based off jealousy. One person would be so obsessive and manipulate the other person into thinking that he/she has betrayed and ruined the relationship. So tiring.
    3. The normalization of predatory, pedophilic behaviors. This unfortunately has been the main plot of so many BL series. One is a minor or someone who's still in their age of development, and one is someone much older, like a highschooler and an older tutor, a freshman and a hot doctor, a student and a teacher, etc. The gaslighting and the power dynamics are just too crazy and upsetting to watch especially when a lot of people think it's okay. This has to end soon.
    I could go on and on but I think those are three major things to fix ASAP.

    More mature content in BLs? Is that still a BL or is it now a more standard Gay drama, romcom etc.? To me, BL is a romanticised, usually straight young female view of the early stages of an emerging relationship (and all its challenges) between two boys, with lots of hand-holding, flirting, getting to know each other, hanging out etc., going on. It's a safe and sanitised view. The emphasis is on the romance and social aspects and not so much on the sexual aspects of the emerging relationship. The question though is this an accurate reflection of the lived reality of young gay and bisexual men who are entering into a relationship? Is that what they want and what they do? In my opinion, maybe not, and the sexual aspect would be a very important part of their relationship and how they bond. The reality is that young gay and bisexual men have sex with each other, and sometimes a lot. So if BL becomes more 'mature' that is it has more scenes of an intimate physical and sexual nature in it, is it still BL or has it now moved into more gay territory? Having those scenes may be more reflective of the lived reality of young gay and bisexual men and how they express their sexuality, but is it still a BL genre?

However, I don't feel any entertainer should be pushed into doing more then they are comfortable doing. The last question's answer was so honest and I feel the same way. Really then I don't like the fan service kind of things like when the fans start shipping their favorite bl actors out of the screen, like they really want their ship to be real .they are humans too they need personal space, they should have the freedom to choose their own partners. They are just an actor who is just displaying the characters and should not take the characters as real because it's their work. When the fans really give their minds and soul into it, it becomes difficult for the fans and actors to work with other actors who is not their ship . Which makes the actors to get work or to play new character with new co- actor difficult .

If they don't want to do fan service, also great. What's not great is "fans" bashing actors when they do or don't do fanservice, or when they act with a different partner. As long as the actors involved are happy and not being pressured by "fans"/management into doing or not doing something, I don't think there should be a problem.

      @@PerthNakhun Thanks for clarifying, Perth. Yes I agree about the comments, and there are often malicious comments including harassment related ones. However the good thing is these haters get called out by majority of the fans and it’s good when companies take action including legal action when some fans get too problematic with their comments or actions.
      Also although I mentioned about the workplace harassment issues I am aware that majority of the people are friendly and kind to each other. However in some companies, from a fan perspective, the whole group including the directors, producers, staff, etc do feel like one big family and I think actors would feel more at ease to give their best performances, whereas in other circumstances this might not be true. It’s natural for fans to not be aware of every behind the scenes issues, so we don’t really have the right to judge, but as long as issues are addressed and properly sorted out it’s fine I guess. 😇

Actors are acting if there friends in real life brilliant if there not brilliant they did great in the show. I just feel its leading a lot off people down a slippery slope what's real or not.

      It's something I find really refreshing in Thai dramas compared with Koreans is they are so much more normal about sex and casual relationships, it's way more realistic and enjoyable! Like I don't need sex scenes all the time but established couples in kdramas should at least kiss and hold hands without the slow motion music and flower petals!

    I just come from GMMTV Part 1 content release for 2024 and it’s a shame they a resorting back to high school & college romance series again for 2024, only looking forward to TayNew, OffGun, EarthMix & JossFluke as they have the more mature aged BL’s

      I completely agree with this. I joined the stream at 5M on no sleep and watched the whole thing. Longest live stream I've ever watched. I thought I missed this because my ADHD brain thought the premiere was at 9am not 10am lol.

      There's still a lot of interest in high school & college series from fans, plus they are mostly low budget. It's not a bad thing. There's plenty of other genres nowadays.

      I’m 33 yrs old Aussie OG BL and Thai Lakorn fan and I think this genre is tired and has been done since this is how I started as a fan in 2014/2015 era of Love Sick & Love of Siam, Ugly Duckling series, Hormones 1,2,3, War of High School etc it’s time to be more diverse and have more mature aged dramas e.g Office or Job Romance, Sci-Fi, Hortor, Supernatural, older LGBTQIA+ series like Wake Up Ladies but more serious just look at how successful Only Friends, Enigma, Midnight Museum, The Jungle, Laws of Attraction, Jun & Jun

    Also congrats to you for realizing all of the awesome opportunities you get as an actor vs. the typical “family dad” you will not regret this time I promise you! I missed out, being a stay at home mom myself even tho I graduated from college with honors. And now I barely just got a job as a front office receptionist. Take the life opportunities you can! Experience as much as possible while you can! Love will be there but it will take a lot of your time so it will be better to have experienced life first and then settle down you will feel like you have lived your life and are ready for the next chapter. So don’t compare yourself to others from your personal life. You’re doing amazing!
