The point of the Clone Wars wasn’t to tell a single cohesive story, it was to flesh out an era, while Rebels was focused entirely on the story of one rebel cell. I’d say both shows achieved their goals very well
I mean that is how it started sure but you can't tell me that the final episodes of season 5 weren't miles better than the "Shinies" episode. Like if you just watched the episodes with Anakin and Ashoka or the ones that directly setup something that payed off with them such as the first few episodes with Cade Bane overall the clone wars would probably be a better series. The little side stories and pretty much all of the first season are definitely the weakest parts of the series.
Yeah I agree with this , I remember that when I saw the promos I was to exited because I thought the series will be about the first years of the galactic civil war . The sad truth come out to be that it was about that but focusing on a minor group :( that tries to replicate Luke’s team from a new hope.
Honestly it bothers me when people say that animation as a medium is for kids, I'm in my mid 20s, and I have watched animated series, movies, as well as Anime, etc. My whole life and have been judged for it as I grew older. Animation as a medium isn't for kids, animation can be anything live action can be.
This right here. I remember the first time I showed my wife Howl's Moving Castle. "is this one of those animes"? she asked. She liked it. When Atla came to Netflix she watched it with me, mainly looking at her phone. Eventually the phone disappeared and we binged it in 2 days. While we aren't the biggest Rebels fans, we do live CW. Now she's really into opening her mind and trying out any medium. As long as the story is there. Hard judgment from her siblings, none from mine.
@@dyj321 that's great to hear eh, I love Ghibli films, my favourite being Castle in the Sky lol. I'm happy she's opening up to animation though despite the judgement from her family, when I was still with my ex wife I tried to get her to watch anime with me and despite enjoying Castle in the Sky, and Spirited Away she saw those as exceptions that make the rule.
Also *spoiler alert*, Ahsoka Tano at the end is left at the end trying to find Ezra, which at the end of her arc could be considered as why she didn't want to take in Grogu. She was on a different path, which is why she demanded the location of Grand Admiral Thrawn at the end of her battle at the end. She wants to get Ezra back.
I feel like the real reason Ashoka is searching for Ezra is not only because they are friends, but because he saved her life, in the beginning of the show Ezra says to Zeb “I saved your life, you know in some places that means something” and I feel maybe Ashoka feels the same way, also Zeb’s rescue of Agent Kallus starts his path down defecting so these things mean something imo. This is only a theory though
I think that since Anakin taught her almost everything she knew about being a Jedi, yet turned to become a Sith, Ahsoka worries if she trained an apprentice, they would be extremely vulnerable to the Dark Side.
@@wafflingmean4477 This. Ashoka is looking for Ezra because she needs his help to help her settle the battle of the force within her. She isn't at peace with the force yet and with what happened with Anakin. She has accepted that Anakin is Vader but that doesn't mean she has found peace with her choices and her role with his fall. I think part of why she is looking for ezra is that ashoka has never been tempted to fall (as far as we know), Ezra has, and has come very close to the darkness. I think talking to him and why he almost fell would help her process Anakin's journey
@@gt-j1035 Also when they leave the world between worlds (the last time Ezra sees Ahsoka in the current canon until the Ahsoka series) Ezra says "When you get back, come and find me" and Ahsoka says she will
This show did Vader so well. Everytime he's on screen he dominates. The only person who can come close to matching him is ahsoka. Kanan and Ezra just fold
I really enjoyed the clear power levels in Rebels. Kanan is like a C- Jedi. Ezra is a padawan. They crush stormtroopers and they can hold their own against Inquisitors, but they pale in comparison to classically trained Jedi like Vader, Maul, and Ashoka.
@@bigboi5545 Fallen Order? He moves his hand and the black lady goes flying. And then he uplifts the entire floor and starts chucking shit around. He rips apart the bridge. And he can seemingly teleport xD
Personally, I love Rebels, and I never found Ezra that annoying. One of my consistently favourite aspects of the show was that he kept escaping whenever he was caught in an imperial prison. And it wasn't necessarily because he was a Jedi, but because he never waited for someone to rescue him because growing up, he didn't have that option, he had to save himself or he was dead. Even after he met the Ghost crew and had a family that would come and save him, he still went out of his way to make it easy for them buy escaping his cells whenever they locked him in one. It was always fun to watch him escape.
Whenever they bring a pre-established character they know they had to honor them so they stray away from the Looneytoons style of writing. That's why thrawn and Vader make the show so much better.
As someone who has watch rebels 2 or 3 times, ill say this: give it a chance. The first few episodes are cheesy and goofy, but as it goes further, it really does get good and the characters, especially ezra, mature as the story advances and become well rounded and likeable people. Not as good as CW imo, but still definitely worth the watch. Resistance on the other hand is a waste of time...
I'm more annoyed that Resistance, even if it didn't want to really mature its characters in order stay "kid-friendly" (which isn't a bad thing in of itself), didn't do anything to help set up TROS. It so easily could have been about Kaz's adventures in establishing Resistance cells across the galaxy and weakening the First Order's hold on the galaxy, making Lando's recruitment of the "people's fleet" so much less bullshit.
I feel like Bad Batch will be the best of both worlds, it will focus on a small group of characters and their relationships as well as having the updated animation. Not to mention the answer to the great question... what happened to the clones?
For people who read legends or whatever and know what happened to the clones, that’s not canon, the bad batch is gonna be canon and awesome. Also I agree.
I think resistance actually had the best 1st season out of TCW, Rebels, and Resistance. I don’t think the second season properly developed and built upon the first, but I’m going to partially attribute it to the fact that no one (including the writers) really knew what was going to happen in 9. The target demographic is a lot younger, but I really think people should give the first season another chance. It’s a shame the show was cancelled before it could really hit it’s stride like TCW and Rebels
@@williamspencer1978 i hated resistance season one i i thought s2 was a lot better but i see where you are coming from as I didn’t like rebels season one and clone wars season one was decent but not outstanding
I HATE all of the sequels but resistance was surprisingly decent, think cause it didn't have much to do with the main sequel characters. Can't compete with clone wars but but still enjoyed it. Rebels would be much better if it wasn't for ezra
I didn’t start watching the animated SW shows until 2015. I binged The Clone Wars series in a month and I was hooked. Then I Started watching Rebels. I enjoyed the hell out of that series. I loved Kanan’s and Ezra’s relationship and watching the formation of the Rebel cell. The show shines whenever it dives into the lore of the force, the Jedi and the sith. I would tell skeptics of the show that they were missing out on some great lore material. Like you I grew to appreciate SW animation. So much so I divided right into SW resistance. Resistance wasn’t as good as TCW and Rebels. But it did have it’s moments. I think it suffered from being an a era of Star Wars that most fan’s soured on after TLJ. Resistance was the most kid friendly of the three animated series. Lastly it couldn’t take any real deep dives into the lore. As the story had little connection to the Jedi, force and Sith. I don’t think Resistance needed the Sith or Jedi to be successful. But to replace that it needed the story to be larger, the stakes higher. Resistance never gave you that. With Rebels the stakes got higher and higher with each season. Without spoiling anything those higher stakes payoff in a big way in that final season. And then Rebles does what any great show does with it’s finale. Leaving you wanting more. So when you say Rebels is better than Clone wars. I definitely can see your point. I think their both great for different reasons. Both are different types of story telling. Awesome review and break down. Look forward to your review of the series as a whole. Specifically your thoughts on Thrawn and his fate. How does this could connect to not only the Mandalorian but to the upcoming Ahsoka series. I also wonder, depending on the fate of Ezra and Thrawn. Will they or can they be apart of this story that will tie all the Disney Plus Star Wars Series together. I would love to hear your thoughts on those topics.
rebels is a beautiful series, flaws and all! I feel some deep connection to it and I don't quite understand it but it's great when anything can touch someone like that i think, whatever it may be.
I think it is never a good sign for a Show If I need to "suffer" through 2 seasons before I can enjoy it. Putting this aside it was Themes and Charackters of the later seasons which Made me curious for the Show. Maul and Obi-Wan, Thrawn, Inquisitor knighting that Guy, etc. And what I've Seen from those Episode the Show did a realy good Job and I very much enjoyed it.
Everybody always seemed to think of Rebels as a letdown and The Clone Wars as a masterpiece. I never really saw a big difference between the two series to be honest. They always kinda seemed like the same thing with their own ups and downs and the only thing I didn't really like in Rebels was goofy stuff at the end but that that was only in the last few episodes and even they were still good overall as well.
Goofy Stuff at the end? Season 4 literally had no filler at all, that's why it has less Episodes than the other Seasons. It's pure story. The only bad thing in Season 4 was Kanans Haircut, but even that is adressed by Hera telling him she hates it, and - you know... Him being blind.
I think people wanted more stories tightly focused on well known characters. Like, who the fuck is Ezra Bridgers, where is Obi-Wan, you know what I mean. I think the whole band of unknown misfits concept was just not what people wanted. And honestly the ONE thing I genuinely loved about this show was Thrawn. The rest was... meh. Even Ahsokas duel with Darth Vader was kinda shallow. Some more actual dialogue would have been awesome.
I actually fell in love with Ezra as a character. You could really see him grow through the series. I also love Vader's design being an homage to Ralph McQuarrie's original design. Rebels also sets a background continuity with the Mandalorian.
Ezra was written very realistically for his age and watching him grow is a huge highlight of the show for me. His arc is very underrated. I also love his little blaster saber 🥺 I was genuinely pissed when Vader destroyed it Ezra was so excited to show it to the rest of the crew and it was a geniunely wholesome "Guys come look what I made!" moment and he probably needed that since he hadn't gotten to have that experience with his birth parents in nearly a decade.
it shows kids that war crimes are ok when people you like do the, which really fits in with a lot of messaging young people are hit with. It can't be terrorism if we like the guys who do it! It can't be torture if it's our troops doing it!
TCW showed war in all its many forms. That there's hero's on both sides, criminals on both sides and that ultimately the only ones to prosper from it are the instigators Educational, for sure.. but with the torture, gripping emotional loss and executions it is certainly not a show for children
Star Wars Rebels is one of the most amazing and incredible series in Star Wars history. Kanan is my favorite Jedi, and Kallus is and incredible character. Yes I agree, I prefer Rebels than Clone Wars, for many years it was a very unpopular opinion but know I see other people think the same.
Seasons 4-7 of TCW are probably better than Rebels, but Rebels is way better than seasons 1-3 of TCW. On balance I think I give it to rebels, but yeah Clone Wars had some great stuff. But what do I know- I'm apparently the only person who liked the Ahsoka-Martez sisters arc better than the bad batch
@Tom Ffrench The thing is, the legends Thrawn is probably too much for kids said by Disney standards while the new Thrawn is a much rounded character. Imagine if Rebels isn't all goofy and plot armor and the Stormtroopers like in Rogue One really hit the characters it would've been different. We do see glimpses of legends Thrawn like when he ordered to open fire on Vult Skerris when Thrawn saw the danger planning by Hera but his ruthlessness is toned down. In legends, Thrawn would annihilate everyone of them if he got the chance than pulling them apart piece by piece. Well, he did that but without plot armor no S4 I guess. Monster Thrawn would unite them first then have a pincer tactic to stop them from leaving the system.
@@felps_4500 I give him a pass on that since that was his flaw even in the novels. He did say that the mysteries of the force is an enigma to him. He even got a pet that can counter the force which was too much for some critics because it made him op.
Exactly. Of course it wasn’t as good as Clone Wars but I understand the story of what Dave Filoni was trying to tell. :) I can understand Ezra being a bit annoying in some places but he still has character build up, he had an sad backstory of his parents being killed by the Galactic Empire, and some of his moments were memorable. :) He also trained to become a Jedi and learned how to lift stuff with a lot of effort unlike Rey the Mary Sue who had no training.🙄 Sabine was also a good character, a Mandalorian girl who also had a darker backstory about her family on Mandalore and the mistakes she made but also try to stop it but her family chose the Empire over her, I felt the same pain she had.🥺 That part gave me chills and made me care about her character even more.💖
Depending on your point of view, Rebels is actually darker and handles a lot of taboo topics Clone Wars avoided. For example, the heroes of Clone Wars were mostly hired help with no personal stake outside of sociopolitical interests. The Jedi were basically galactic cops who could have walked away if they so chose. The clone troopers initially didn't know they had options, and only really gained individual will over time. Meanwhile, every member of Rebels is a survivor who's lost everything. Canaan lost his master and the entire Jedi Order, suffering PTSD in the proocess. Ezra lost his family and had to rely on street smarts to survive. Sabine was essentially an outcast of her people who designed horrific weapons before realising what the Empire really stood for. Zev lost his entire race. Hera comes from a race that's doomed to be either slaves or thugs. Every one of them comes from a broken planet, making the Ghost family even more special. Unlike Ahsoka and Anakin, Ezra and Sabine tend to be cocky because they want to provoke the enemy. They know their limitations and while both can get annoying of end up in hot water, they don't put others at risk if they can help it. For me, the Clone Wars is a typical war series, with only a few of those UC Gundam moments where you actually feel loss (such as Ahsoka abandoning the Jedi Order). The also don't spend a lot of time showing all sides of the war. But in Rebels, the smaller focus makes you care about these people more dearly and you get to know the villains and their motivations. You really feel the loss alongside the characters when something happens, and there's a sense of danger you just don't feel in CW because every loss is so much more profound. Seeing one fighter destroyed and knowing the rebel cell only has 15 and about as many pilots hurts a lot more than a huge battle where 50 fighters carrying clones are blown up and immediately replaced by 100 more. Also, while the animation style is still a bit off-putting, I find it higher quality than in CW, and that probably has to do largely with the more limited amount of assets required per scene. Fewer asserts means faster rendering and far fewer polygons, so more time and effort can be spent on each model. Clone Wars will always be better for some, but it's more about large-scale war than individual characters. It fills a gap and tells many stories that intertwine with the only really relatable character being Ahsoka. But for others like myself, the more intimate nature, higher stakes, and greater focus on main characters (on both sides) makes it the more mature of the two shows. I really hope Bad Batch is able to go more of a Rebels route and keep the tone more intimate, because both the title group and Tarkin deserve a lot of love that can't be told in a generic war story.
@@newdivide9882 Well that's kinda stupid. Why do people compalim about the thin lightsabers? Do you guys keep forgetting that in A New Hope, when Obi-Wan and Vader dueled on the Death Star, that their lightsabers were just as thin?
Yeah I’m glad I’m not the only one who noticed that. The corvettes just fly around with targets painted on their back, I think there’s one episode where one shoots.
It is true the Hammerhead Corvettes never shoot anything in Rebels but it is so interesting to see how they came to be part of Phoenix Squadron so one of them could be in the position to take down the planetary shield at the Battle of Scarif in Rogue One. It is the backstory to a key piece of what allowed the Rebels to get their hands on the plans for the Death Star.

I literally grew up watching Rebels, it came out just after I became a star wars fan. I still remember waiting for Saturdays (it always aired saturday in my country) to come so that I could watch a new episode, and I remember myself crying at the end. I'm currently watching the whole saga in chronological order (I'm in clone wars season 2 now) and I'm sure I'll cry again
Same I became a star wars fan, 1 years before or even the years of Rebels season 1. I was able to go to the theater premiere of the first episodes and I just loved it. It's funny to find someone who was looking forward to Saturday for that too. Unfortunately after season 2 I ended up dropping out because the episodes were not (in my memory) really in order on TV. And it's only with the Mandalorian series that I decided to dive back into it (yes the last 3 Star Wars movies had disgusted me a little from the franchise) and it's just still still better then it was in my memories,... I watches it in like 3 day (I still have to watch the season 4). All the characters, scenario ans the universe are cool. It's the star wars I like
As is common with Star Wars animated series, it had a pretty rocky start but by the end it’s amazing content with some of the most memorable moments around.
I do prefer clone wars a bit more but i have a massive soft spot for both and I’m glad a majority of Star Wars fans really like rebels. Don’t let any of those soulless Disney-haters who are only around Star Wars to hate complain about your opinion
Rebels is really fun and scrappy, till it gets sad and scary, but even then it's a pretty solid piece of canon. Thanks eck for making me feel normal for loving rebels.
The first half of the last series, the Bad Batch episodes, didn't feel like it had that passion but otherwise I completely agree. That bit with the world between worlds (aka the "Get out of the sequel trilogy free" machine) will stick with me for a very, very long time.
@Pepper amazing. The entire rebels crew could die and nothing would change prolly. You could argue scary blue man Thrawn would still be around but he never succeeded in doing anything so it's not like he would turn any tides
I totally didn't mind the cartoony look, nor the simpler storylines. Sometimes I'm just not in the mood for a mind bender. Rebels just felt like ... Star Wars !! I still can't get over how BRAVE Ezra was when he faced Vader. How many kids would've done the same instead of just being crushed? And yes, Ezra was obnoxious at first. But like Ahsoka, he matured and really grew on me. The Obi-Wan/Maul duel was perfect. The Loth-Wolves were so special. The World Between Worlds was amazing. Ahsoka turned into an absolute BEAUTY and I practically fell in love with Kanan ! I ❤️ REBELS!

I allways wonder why people have the mindset of "animated" beeing only for kids. Maybe I never developed that mindset because I very early in my life watches movies like Akira that are animated but not something I would say is for kids. A good story can be told in many forms and it will still be a good story. Heck lately I am watching an "animated" show that is more like a puppet show with 2D characters that are "animated" as in they wiggle a bit left and right when the talk or walk but the story they tell is hillarious and I am very well entertained...and beeing Warhammer 40k related its not exactly what I would show kids ^_^
What I like to do when people say "animated shows are for kids!" Is show them Happy Tree Friends, Attack On Titan, Star Trek Lower Decks, Archer, FMP, FMA, etc. And usually they shutup after Happy Tree Friends.
Well, that started with Hanna-Barbera. Cartoons used to be the appetizer shown before the main feature at non-kid movies. That's why the old Disney and Warner Brother cartoons from the 40s are filled with adult humor. But with the advent of TV and the fact that kids love animated shows, Hanna-Barbera figured out a way to make cheap, animated content geared toward kids. And thus animated features became for kids. The exception to the rule are the Pixar films. For whatever reason, those got a pass as family things rather than just being kid things.

That part where Vader says ahsoka I have pause that and rewound it 10 times it's amazing how they did that with the voice in the face and the eye that was amazing
I feel like this show definitely has its moments where it outpaces the clone wars as a show. One of my biggest gripes with the original trilogy was the fact that the stormtroopers seemed so useless and I wish they would be more imposing and threatening. One of my favorite parts of rogue one was that they made the stormtroopers and the empire itself feel much more like a group you wouldn't want to mess with. In rebels I find that the stormtroopers are reduced to faceless cannon fodder yet again but this time it feels even worse. If this show was specifically for kids I wouldn't mind but it it seems like the show cant decide weather it wants to be a kids show or a serious show and it makes it hard to get into for me.
The only stormtroopers who redeemed themselves was the one who knocked out rex, the one who chased ezra "all for fruit" the gunner who killed gregor. The stormtroopers who attacked the seperatist base. And maybe like 1 other sequence. I do agree with you however stormtroopers were portrayed pretty badly in this show tho.
@@tankcommander26 Generally it depend on the period. Shortly after Clone Wars, many veteran Clone Troopers sill serve as Stormtroopers and recruitment standards were still high. But over time many Imperial Trooper units (those where Solo serve) were equipped with Stormtrooper equipment and quality drop noticeably, as Empire cared more about utilizing fear factor of old units. In such context Death Troopers are actual representation of old Stormtroopers. After Endor Empire started straight hiring bandits and farmers.
While I still find myself preferring the Clone Wars for it's tone and the fact that it is an anthology story for the Prequel Era, what I really like the most about Rebels is that every episode feels some what meaningful. It feels like there is very little filler in Rebels compared to TCW. Every episode mattered.
I liked how the Force isn't just for humanoids Rebels, it's also useable by animals like the Loth Wolves, showing that the force is truly universal, and present in all things. The Bendu was also interesting, since it reinforced that there isn't purely Dark or Light side usage (and I love the usage of the never before heard terms for them), but a spectrum.
Western adult audiences have an inherent bias against animation. Because Disney animation is such a building block of many of our childhoods we get programmed that animation means kids. Other cultures use animation in film and TV all the time, it’s just another medium to tell a story. I have begged my Star Wars fan friends to watch Rebels and Clone Wars and they give me the same response, “cartoons are for babies”.
Nah brother, I can and will watch animation, I really like the better done Japanese style animated scifi. But just could not enjoy the stories and style of this series. I am not a Star Wars fan that will watch all SW content just because it's branded. Perhaps if they had taken it more seriously I might have enjoyed it. There certainly are great examples of fan-made Star Wars animation out there.
I agree with you. It’s an interesting point, do you have a theory of why this bias exist among western adult audiences? Personally I love Star Wars Rebels with all my heart, the animation is superb, the landscapes of Lothal with its cats and its moons are poetic. And, I love Rebels more than Clone Wars. My favorite Star Wars characters are from this series: Kanan, Kallus and Zeb, Ezra, Chopper, Sabine.
Not at all. The animation for Clone Wars was dirty and had a lot of jagged edges. Characters could look appropriately menacing and evil. With Rebels everything is just too cute. Even Darth Maul looks cute in that show. The problem is not animation in itself, but more the style of the animation. To me Rebels is actively trying to say "this show IS for kids" with the animation, whereas Clone Wars clearly went for an older audience.
@@peterreimer2540 Rebels tells a very serious story that honestly has some of the deepest character moments in Star Wars. It’s not just crap that’s “Star Wars branded”. The notion that the creators didn’t take it seriously is laughable and shows that you don’t actually know the story. Hence my comments about your bias against the animation style. You think it looks like a not serious show for babies therefore you didn’t watch it therefore you don’t actually know what the show is about.

I don’t know lots of animated characters have nature hair color. Having dyed hair doesn’t make a character cartoony. Also it is pretty clear she dyes her hair. Having colorful is a trope in Anime. Anime is not cartoons. Anime is not all animation.

I agree it was good and I don’t know if it was just me or not, but when Kanan and Ezra first meet Bendu and Ezra goes to plant the replusor rod; that camera angle they used almost made it seem like a stop-motion animation and not a 3d animated show.
It ties things together like school glue and macaroni. The only cool part is the time period in general, and the way the characters we know from before have been affected. The animation style is different, and I respect them for trying. But it failed, miserably. It looks weird in motion. Also, all the direction in the show is so bland and boring. Every shot is people just walking around in circles, dodging blaster bolts, and fighting in practically slow motion. Nothing creative happens. Remember in Clone Wars, when they put ATTEs on an asteroid? Or when they had entire episodes underwater? Or when we got to see dynamic and suspenseful space combat? I mean if thrawn was still around during the ot then the rebels wouldnt stand a chance. The purgls make sense to take him away from the scene. Still could be cool to see kalani and droid army. Brings me back to bf2 droids vs storms.
right!! i watched all of rebels, then went onto the internet expecting everybody to love it as much as i did, only to find tons of hate. let me just say, that was disappointing 🥲
No it wasn't, give me 5 good reasons rebels is good. Here are 2 bad ones: 95 percent of the show is filler and the characters barely show emotion, even if they do its for a little.
@@clonesolar 1: Kanan Jarrus 2: the rest of the crew 3: the entire mandalore arc 4: Agent Kallus's redemption/defection arc 5: literally any scene with Ahsoka, Rex, or Hondo in it. Rebels really missed the mark, but much like the prequels before them, there were some genuinely compelling and emotional storylines going on if you were willing to look past the rough edges.(and let's be honest, when has star wars ever NOT had rough edges)
Just finished the final episode, its super underated. I genuinely cared about the ghost crew through out the show and it was incredible seeing their growth as people and as a family.
I just finished my re-watch of Rebels and I can totally agree with you about how its worth a watch, especially since Thrawn, Ezra, and Ashoka will come into play soon.
I hate people complaining about whiny Star Wars characters. "Anakin is so whiny in Episode II." He's mirroring Luke's whiny scenes in Episode 4. He's even in the same room! "Ahsoka is so whiny." She's literally designed that way on purpose so she can learn. "Ezra is so whiny." See my above points on both Anakin and Ahsoka. It's called character growth. If you can't deal with that, then I feel sorry for your own growth as a human being. As if anyone complaining about a whiny character was never whiny themselves at some point in their lives.
Absolutely loved the family dynamic and the mystical aspect of the Force. I didn't even know how attached I grew to the characters and by the time the last episodes came out, they blindsided me, it was like getting hit by a truck of emotion. Truly an incredible series and it's such a shame people put it off for something as superficial as art style.
@@Larry-Lobster I’m so sorry Larry that my analogy doesn’t appease you to your satisfaction, please refer to my agent and we can discuss an analogy you’re happy with
One thing I don’t really like about Ahsoka in the Mandalorian is how she doesn’t really look like her appearance in Rebels, she’s based of her clone wars appearance even show men’s much older in the Mandalorian.
In my mind the changes to her "hair" as a technical problem but the clothes is different just because she needs a disguise and the simplicity helps the fight scenes,in rebels ending she was full Ahsoka the white just to show the change, now she doesn't need that,is a unfortunately change but i can accept
Rebels had great story, character development. The animation sucked in comparison to TCW, also the saber duels were really bland. The thing that ruins Rebels a lot for me is the kid friendliness - sure TCW was also PG but it felt better.
I've seen people complain that Rebels suck because the battles aren't as big as in Clone Wars. Let me repeat - they thought the show about a group of 5 people (set in a time of relative stability and peace in the galaxy) sucked because it didn't have battles with thousands of starfighters, dozens of capital ships, and hundreds of thousands of troops on the ground. Yeah.
To me rebels started off too goofy but got better over time. It has some great characters and a ton of clone wars nostalgia, and its lows are low but its highs are just as if not as high as the clone wars
It has some great moments, which ironically came from when the story included non main characters. Ahsoka, Vader, Maul, Lando, etc...but some of the episodes come off as overly cheesy and uninteresting. It’s not as bad as people say, but I don’t think it’s as good as he says.
Rebels is the one piece of Star Wars that has made me fully cry (on multiple occasions). I’ve teared up from other stuff, but never properly cried. It’s amazing, and I really wish people who haven’t seen it would give it a chance. The cohesion and character development across the four seasons make it incredibly satisfying to watch each of the characters grow. The art style never bothered me, but that’s 100% a personal preference thing so I can understand that it might not work for some people.
Off screen but still kinda dark. I wish Disney has the balls to show it and even show more instances of Legends Thrawn. Like they decapitated Thanos like nothing but here? They are saying Star Wars is for kids? Yeah right.
@@hogndog2339 In the third to last episode, where Governor Tarkin calls in the two reoccurring imperial officers the fat and skinny guys, chastises them for constantly failing then has the Grand Inquisitor kill them to make an example.
Yeah, doesn't mean it's not a kid's show. Uncle Owen and aunt Beru's charred corpses were a major plot point in star wars, which was a movie made for children, so this is absolutely kiddy by comparison.
I never really watched rebels properly until just a few days ago, where I’ve sat and binged it all, start to finish. I only ever saw a few odd episodes. I never thought it was possible to get attached to the crew so much, and We have Ashoka now, so we now the fate of certain characters, but I genuinely started to tear up at the finale. It’s a fantastic series, I loved every minute of it. I’ve come to deeply appreciate the art style. It does what it needs to. I love clone wars, always have, but something about rebels hit different.
I love rebels mainly for the characters Hearing kanan in TROS was a cool callback Can’t wait to see Ezra in ahsoka hopefully not as a bad guy or a dead body
Was sceptical about Rebels too but it’s a show that grows on you and gets better every season. Some outstanding moments, Ashoka especially. Without giving it away ( those who have seen it will know) it’s one of the best moments in Star Wars.
Resistance explored some interesting stuff but if it was longer and season 2 didn't had pointless filler then it would have been almost as good as rebels
I am a older fan with seeing the OT as they came out and I enjoyed the series. One of my kids' friends lent us the DVD and I was happily surprised. Kanan because of his flaws has made him my favorite Jedi out of both canon and Legends. I like flawed characters as you can tell with my favorite Legends is Cade.
@@exar1806 CW was dark too. Think about CW for a second. Think about some of the arcs. A lot of them were super complex if you think about it, and CW is supposed to be a kids show.
Watching the end of Clone Wars with Ashoka and Anakin last meet and then seeing then meet again in Twilight of the Apprentice hits you right in the feels. Harder than when it originally aired. And when Vader's mask is damaged and we hear Anakin call out to Ashoka in both Vader & Anakin's voice still sends chills down my spine. And let's not forget Maul vs Obi-Wan. This show had so many great moments that felt like it expanded the OT, not just built off it.
Eck I don't have to watch the video to completely agree with you my whole family loves this My daughters cried when Kanan died even more so when they thought Ahsoka had died as well Suffice it to say We're all huge fans We're ALSO wondering when we'll see Chopper on the Mandolorian
I wish in the future we get an animation that's a mix of rebels and clone wars. The Ralph Concept Art is really cool and mixed with the clean clone wars styling it would be great.
Peoples gripes with Rebels is mainly this: I don’t want it to be as good as clone wars but I expect it to be as good as clone wars and when I watched it I was disappointed that it wasn’t clone wars. Like that they’re worried they can’t like more than one at the same time because they won’t be seen as a true fan to one or the other for some reason. And that it’s childish compared to the clone wars. Yeah clone wars has adult themes but if you had never seen it and went off what fans told you about clone wars you’d think there was sex scenes, gore and swearing but it’s simply not true, obviously your never going to have a violent character like Savage Opress in Rebels but the themes it carries doesnt really require violence just for the sake of it being on screen. A World Between Worlds and Twilight of the Apprentice are better than any Clone Wars Episode. Only The Lawless comes close, but even then it’s not enough. Both of the episodes are PEAK Star Wars, the stakes, the characters, the music, the way the force is used, mystical, futuristic and ancient as well as dramatic and peaceful they are Star Wars at its finest, when I watched them for the first time it was similar to how I felt watching the original trilogy for the first time they really are that good, genuine masterpieces. Clone wars is part of rebels and to dismiss it because it’s not a carbon copy is stupid
I started rewatching Rebels with my girl last week(her first time). Honestly great storytelling. Where clone wars was a Great War story rebels was a great coming of age story about becoming something bigger than yourself.
I’d say Rebels episodes are worse than the worst Clone Wars episode. For example in season one of Rebels there’s an episode where Ezra and Zeb go and get a fruit for Hera and end up stealing a Tie fighter.
@Rusher Ranker7 I wouldn’t say some of the worst, but I would say some of the best and some mediocre. I can’t really think of a CW arc I didn’t enjoy, maybe there’s 1 or 2 I’m forgetting about.
I just rewatched the entire series for the first time since it aired, and it is so much better when you rewatch it. The 1st season is ok but you can really see it get better as the finale carries into season 2. Twilight of the Apprentice in Season 2 might be some of the best Star Wars we’ve ever gotten. Season 3 is also great as Thrawn is introduced and we get some Mandalore action, and the second half of the final season is incredible with all the force episodes.
I’ll be honest I was biased, i knew there was another season clone wars, but Disney wanted to move forward with “thier” Star Wars. I was not a happy about it, watched the first 3 episodes and that was it. When the demand from the fans started, and season 7 was on the way, i decided why not. I was pleasantly surprised and glad I gave it second chance. Thank Eck

A lot of the episodes are really good but the finale was really weak.

The point of the Clone Wars wasn’t to tell a single cohesive story, it was to flesh out an era, while Rebels was focused entirely on the story of one rebel cell. I’d say both shows achieved their goals very well
Rebels felt like it was trying to do two things at once
@@allowableman2 and succeeded
I mean that is how it started sure but you can't tell me that the final episodes of season 5 weren't miles better than the "Shinies" episode. Like if you just watched the episodes with Anakin and Ashoka or the ones that directly setup something that payed off with them such as the first few episodes with Cade Bane overall the clone wars would probably be a better series. The little side stories and pretty much all of the first season are definitely the weakest parts of the series.
Yes i totally agree with you
Yeah I agree with this , I remember that when I saw the promos I was to exited because I thought the series will be about the first years of the galactic civil war .

Hard judgment from her siblings, none from mine.
ya had me until anime
@@dyj321 that's great to hear eh, I love Ghibli films, my favourite being Castle in the Sky lol.
I'm happy she's opening up to animation though despite the judgement from her family, when I was still with my ex wife I tried to get her to watch anime with me and despite enjoying Castle in the Sky, and Spirited Away she saw those as exceptions that make the rule.
Dude, I’m 45 and watch animation almost exclusively.
Just show them Happy Tree Friends......then laugh.
Too many "at the end".
Even Ashoka he had full control

@@michaelbills8669 did you call *DARTH MAUL* a JEDI???
I actually really liked that in TCW almost every arc was about somebody else. It felt different, yet it connects everything together.
Yeah, you get to see many different points of view.
Except aayla and some of the other background jedi. Screw those people.

I concur, i think it’s going to be brilliant
We would get a nice view of what happened to the millions of clones during the transition to the Empire, how they adapt to the new change

I can powerfully relate. I must also say I loved every character, and unlike many, my list includes Ezra.

Rebels is definitely way more consistent in terms of quality from episode to episode
I was mainly referring to the time travel and teleporting animals and space whales.
For me the let down was the animation style. I prefer TCW's animation (especially in the latter half of the series).
The art style is pretty jarring at first but you get used to it especially when you realise that it's supposed to be like the old concept arts
Its not though. Please go look at the actual art and you'll see nothing is even close to similar
Yeah the art is kinda weird like some of the Imperials look like ghosts cause their skin is so damn pale

I hate the toothpick lightsabers
@@Mk-kk4mk I understand why, but that's because they were paying tribute to the original trilogy.
If Clone Wars was for kids, explain the war crimes.
Wel....l uhhh...
- walks away silently -
it shows kids that war crimes are ok when people you like do the, which really fits in with a lot of messaging young people are hit with. It can't be terrorism if we like the guys who do it! It can't be torture if it's our troops doing it!
Kids don't understand war crimes, but yeah it's not a kid show.
TCW showed war in all its many forms. That there's hero's on both sides, criminals on both sides and that ultimately the only ones to prosper from it are the instigators
Educational, for sure.. but with the torture, gripping emotional loss and executions it is certainly not a show for children
Burn your enemies alive, torture them for information, lie, cheat and steal. (And thats just the things the heroes do)

You have the example of the ahsoka novel. Filoni changed some parts of it in the clone wars.
@Tom Ffrench
The thing is, the legends Thrawn is probably too much for kids said by Disney standards while the new Thrawn is a much rounded character.

I give him a pass on that since that was his flaw even in the novels. He did say that the mysteries of the force is an enigma to him.
He even got a pet that can counter the force which was too much for some critics because it made him op.
Rebels is so underrated! Sure it's a bit more childish than the clone wars but the story telling in the show is spectacular and well worth seeing!
Exactly. Of course it wasn’t as good as Clone Wars but I understand the story of what Dave Filoni was trying to tell. :)
I can understand Ezra being a bit annoying in some places but he still has character build up, he had an sad backstory of his parents being killed by the Galactic Empire, and some of his moments were memorable. :)
He also trained to become a Jedi and learned how to lift stuff with a lot of effort unlike Rey the Mary Sue who had no training.🙄
Sabine was also a good character, a
Mandalorian girl who also had a darker backstory about her family on Mandalore
and the mistakes she made but also try to stop it but her family chose the Empire over her, I felt the same pain she had.🥺
That part gave me chills and made me care about her character even more.💖
Depending on your point of view, Rebels is actually darker and handles a lot of taboo topics Clone Wars avoided.
Calab Dume sacrificing himself to save Hera and blowing up the fuel depot hits me in the feels way more than Din Jarin saying goodbye to Grogu

My only complaint is that the Rebel corvettes never shoot anything. Even fighters, the one thing they are made to shoot and then Yoda.

I agree I mean look at the Pixar movies
@@AstroNerdBoy I remember that when Animes came to the cinema in my country they started with Princess Mononoke (IIRC) without an age restriction.

There certainly are great examples of fan-made Star Wars animation out there.
I agree with you. It’s an interesting point, do you have a theory of why this bias exist among western adult audiences? @@peterreimer2540 I dunno for me rebels feels very Star Wars. Just because you didn’t like it doesn’t mean they didn’t take it seriously
Not at all. The animation for Clone Wars was dirty and had a lot of jagged edges. Characters could look appropriately menacing and evil. With Rebels everything is just too cute. Even Darth Maul looks cute in that show. The problem is not animation in itself, but more the style of the animation. Was sceptical about Rebels too but it’s a show that grows on you and gets better every season. Some outstanding moments, Ashoka especially. Without giving it away ( those who have seen it will know) it’s one of the best moments in Star Wars.
Man I loved clone wars and rebels. Resistance was hit and miss.
Yes, but still watchable. Sometimes I feel like people shit on Rebels, only because it was made by Disney. It is actually really good show.
Resistance explored some interesting stuff but if it was longer and season 2 didn't had pointless filler then it would have been almost as good as rebels
@@orbaitv5991 Yeh, this series died prematurely.
@@orbaitv5991 just like rebels, its literally just filler. HOW CAN YOU GUYS BE ENTERTAINED? I got bored after the 2nd episode.
You guys watched Resistance?
I just finished rebels a week ago, it was amazing!! I had a great time and I haven't cried over a showing in a while🤧 I loved it!💫
Is it strange that one of my favorite moments of Rebels is finally getting to see Royal Guards in action? Oh, and Thrawn...
It was enjoyable for sure. Especially in the final season when shit got real and weird.
Rebels didn't get as deep as CW. Rebels wasn't bad, but it was definitely geared more towards kids.
Can you explain/expand? Do you mean dark? Not deep?
Agreed
Eck I don't have to watch the video to completely agree with you my whole family loves this
My daughters cried when Kanan died even more so when they thought Ahsoka had died as well
Suffice it to say We're all huge fans
We're ALSO wondering when we'll see Chopper on the Mandolorian
Hopefully never
Rebels is underrated. It definitely had its moments
Yes it did
Yeah it had moments but you have to suffer through at least 3/4 bullsh
Underrated because sucks
Definitely liked the camaraderie and the serialization better on Rebels. And loved Grand Admiral Thrawn!
Rebels has some of the coolest and most emotional moments in all star wars as well as some amazing creatures and ideas.🤙🤙
Like the animal force affinity that manifests when Ezra unwittingly taps into his fear. Just great.
@@stevebreedlove9760 the purgils blew my mind!
I feel that Rebels never gets as good as The Clone Wars at its best, but never gets as bad as Clone Wars at its worst
@@TheLiamster rebels are modeled on the vietcong. Ambush and attacks of opportunity are your only option in asymmetric war.
Thank Eck
