- Recorded in 1969, in Basel. I have just added the English subtitles, don't forget to turn them on. In this rare footage Argerich warms up, plays a few bars of Beethoven's Sonata Op. 101 and performs the Chopin Mazurka in C major, Op. 24 No. 2.
Please, don't download and repost this video somewhere else.
There is a complete performance of the Beethoven Sonata on my channel (audio only). Check it here: • Argerich - Beethoven: ...
She is just too much - in the best possible way. The greatest living pianist, one of the greatest ever, and her she is with tinted glasses, leather skirt and cigs, and this one of the most soulful Mazurkas.
Cigs are lame btw
@@yuhin4694cigs are lame but Martha is nothing but lame ❤
She looks so powerful and totally in control here at such a young age ... The world at her feet
She's 28 here. Not that young!
@@farhadnawab7642 well she is 80 now... id say 28 is pretty relatively young
@@farhadnawab7642 28 not young? lol

Martha Argerich in her youth---too fabulous for words...
She is still beautiful now but in her young age nobody could be so hot AND gifted at the same time. Amazing!
She's the BEST I've seen and heard and I don't think I'll ever see another like her.
Not True! Better more beautiful colorful piano Sound than Argerich=Wilhelm Kempff Emil Gilels Artur Rubinstein Vladimir Ashkenazy! More powerful Louder than Argerich=Mikhail Pletnev The Supernova Explosion power( Prokofiev piano concerto no 1 by Pletnev!) The Second Loudest was Lazar Berman! More Genius than Argerich=Sviatoslav Richter Solomon Cutner Grigory Sokolov Maurizio Pollini Alexei Lubimov Stanislav Igolinsky!
Radu Lupu more colorful piano Sound
Her touch and rhythmic dynamic impart such an incredible element of spontaneity. What a delightful personality on the instrument.
Such a BEAUTIFUL woman...
She belongs to Humanity, and I'm Argentinian. Nationalism it's absurd when the universal beauty of music it's the subject.
You cannot forget that she is one of the few examples we still have for patriotic narcistic gratification., but yes, her music and her belong to the whole world.
I love her!! She is so beautiful!!
Beautiful and talented!
@@MaxLima1 yesss!
@@MaxLima1 Talented first, but wow, for my taste one of the most beautiful women i have seen. nothing is more beautiful than intelligence....
Fire and Ice
Smoking is pretty obnoxious but she is a beautiful, enchanting woman.
@Fire and Ice bruh this was in 1969, most people smoked. And she had her lesson anyway...
i have never heard a mazurka played so subtly and beautifully
Last sip at 1:02, and less than a sec she had entered into the mood instantly.. amazing and inspiring as usual!
Never heard her playing of Beethoven 28th Sonata! What an absolute treasure, thank you Max!

You're welcome, SY Kim! You should definitely check the audio I posted on my channel with the entire sonata recorded around the same time of this video in Italy. Martha never sounded so tender for me as in that Beethoven recording! Danny Boy has replied your comment with the link, I've also added it to the description box. Let me know what you think later!
Truly 'One of nature's happenings'.
With Martha one can learn how nature is both spiritual and volcanic. I loved your comment! Thanks you. I invite you to subscribe to my channel in case you haven't. :)
So young here and undeniably beautiful, already a great pianist. On a BBC radio program almost fifty years ago, another great Julius Katchen pianist referred to his young colleague as " a kind of sexy angel".
I just cry. No one's ever made it with this piece.
Unbelievable talent ... a rare being ... from another world ... N.J.V.
What a beautifully prepared and voiced piano.
It's not only her exquisite performance but her personality and beauty as well..by the way she's so humble. I like her so much ♥️
Thank you for posting this gem, watched it over and over again! Long live, Martha!
Otherworldly cool.
Sits down and launches into it pretty much in one motion...and then pulls on a cig. Oh this must've been a hell of a chick..
It means she is not a nerd
Still is a hell of a chick.
Cringe
But
She was and still is
What an amazing video... she’s such a beautiful woman, in her intellect of course, but also her looks!
I still waiting for years to “unveil” videos like this! Thank you so much! She is definitely gorgeous
She is a legend! Having a smoke in between practising piano where most consider as an upper class activity
I'd never seen her at that young age... She was really beautiful
Yong and beautiful !)
Beautiful Chopin too
Thank you maxxy.. you never let us down 👏🏻
La reine... the queen... Even at a young age, Martha had a regal presence about her.. Her sound is so transcendental.
Super cool woman. Monster pianist. Virtuoso essence.

PIANIST Martha Argerich
June 5, 1941 Buenos Aires
"With her broad and varied repertoire, carefully chosen and never conformist, Martha Argerich has dominated the piano world since the 1960s.
1955: After studies in Argentina, Argerich 'embarks' for Europe to study with Friedrich Gulda, Madeleine Lipatti and Nikita Magaloff."

She is so cool here.. Like smoking at wearing shades while playing effortlessly. And she looks stunning as well. I guess she is still married to Dutoit during this time. Thank you MAX 🤗🤗🤗 WE LOVE YOUR CHANNEL
She was like a rockstar
In the top ten pianists of the 20th century. My own all time favorite. Power, grandeur, majesty - sorrow pathos, tragedy. She could do it all.
Yeah, she could! Top level technique too!
She CAN

Indeed it is rare footage!!! I, in my long years of collecting, have never seen it. Well done and congratulations on preserving this material. Very rare to hear Op. 101 warming up. It is still a joy to have recovered this. Big hug!!! Maria ♥️
I fully agree. Amazing find!
Thank you, Maria! Big hug!
I just discovered this beautiful pianist today and when I saw "recorded in 1969", I realized I was 51 years too late. Don't even know how old she is today. Nonetheless it's great to have UA-cam so we can learn and appreciate artists of today and yesterday.
She is 79 now
She's 80 now.
"Martha the Beatnik....how cool!"
Beat was in the 60's yes, but beatniks were a 50's thing
Genius in every sense of the word.
I know she used to smoke, but this is the first time I've ever seen her wearing glasses =o
She's argentinian, just like Daniel Barenboim and many other artists and musician that inspirated the whole latinoamerica. I'm proud of my country. World class.
Yes, I am Americano and I think Argentina is wonderful in spite of
"The hand of God. "
She's fabulous!! I hope to meet her someday.
She played at my center, don't know her personally, but she is amazing. I play the piano she played and its an honor!
Matias Herrera *inspired, not inspirated.

Thank you Max Lima for this little treasure. I very much appreciate this kind of "documentary approach" - a snippet of piano playing history, nothing more, nothing less. Of course we love all the ingenious renditions of whole works that we can get our hands on. But a video like this sheds light on a totally different, and fascinating, aspect of the people we think of as "the great pianists".
Thank you very much for your nice comment, Martin! I agree with you, this approach really works well, even though Martha, at that time, needed no introduction to the public, for everyone already knew who she was! I suppose you speak German, but if you don't you might like to check the video again, I have just added the English subtitles! Thanks for your comment, I invite you to subscribe to my channel in case you haven't. Have a good day! :)
Was Sagan Sie....
Was sagen sie! LOL
Gosh, this is stunning! Thanks a lot. I would give everything to watch her live performance of Beethoven sonata 101. I recently bought the CD and I'm mad about it!
I tried to purchase it, but apparently they don't deliver it to Brazil... This recital is amazing.
The recital in Venice?? Where can I purchase it?!
alessio coletta thank you so much! That IS expensive 😳 I'll ask my teacher if he has a copy. Might be cheaper haha!
ua-cam.com/video/yej-5f67Z7Y/v-deo.html
Alessio Coletta; At age 15 (1966) I stumbled upon Brahm's 2nd Concerto in Bb Maj., Sviatoslav Richter and Chicago Symphony; Eric Liensdorf. It was recorded ~1959.
That record was played every day or night through high school (remember stacking albums on a spindle?) along w/ Beatles, Doors, Dead, Jethro Tull...
I've heard different recordings and they all seem to be missing something.
"Mad about," indeed. To bad I never even heard of Martha before Beato popularized her...
T_T me enamoré 60 años tarde
Vielen Dank!
My favourite Beethovensonata
She just knew she was fine
i fell in love
Ah! Such sparkling technique.
pure magic
Wow...
I’m really touched..
She is soooo adorable ...especially at 2:15
Thank u very much, Max!🥰☺️
Isn't she? It is so disarming how she seems to have everything under her control and then just starts smoking and plays that sweet Beethoven sonata. So lovely! I am glad you enjoy my uploads, thank you for your comment :)
Que mujer mas sexi!!!
Si belle Mazurka

My favourite person alive alongside Werner Herzog.
Beethoven op. 101 played wonderful
Isn't it? I absolutely love how she looks so rebel with that black outfit and cigarretes and then suddenly starts playing the tenderest Beethoven Sonata... I have been always amazed with this video and I don't regret sharing it at all. Many people here in the comments seem to be quite happy!

Maravilhosa e brilhante sempre e sempre!
Woow
intersting aspects are showing this short video. Marta Agerich (the moderator pronounced her name in Spanish) was a modern child of her time, in the style of cool Jazz. Sexy more in the sence of "cool". The pianist lady are more glamour girls, showing more skin and make-up. Such an alternative "sexiness" we can see here can not convince a jury of a piano competition.
damn, she good!
'Lioness' of the piano: Martha Argerich turns 80
"The Argentine-born virtuoso is arguably the best pianist in the world today. At 80, she still exudes passion and power when performing."

She programmed the Amajor Sonata earlier in her career I've not heard her in it . Will she ever give us another Scarlatti sonata or some more Scriabin. Amazing that we have Prometheus! I'm sure Guldaand Scaramuzza gave her many of them but she plays what she feels she can do on the highest level. Will not play Beeth no.3 concerto. We think we know her - we don't . It takes a lot to travel from hotel to hotel and have children , parents and friends and yet be on run from concert and that means practicing often .

I never noticed until just now, how small her hands are.
In the first seconds of warmup 0:35, does she play some beethoven waldstein chords?
0:50
This is great...to be honest, i dont often enjoy her playing, but this makes me want to consider some more listeing.
Die Brille! Die Kippe!
But isn't it at least slightly ironic that the aim of the event was to promote Argentinian culture, and what we get is a performance of Beethoven and Chopin? :D
What did you expect the Argentine classical music pianist to play?
@@pjbpiano there are great classical composers from argentina, and from all over the world actually.
@@ignacioclerici5341, yes. There are. But when you invite a professional classical pianist who specialized in Beethoven and Chopin, what are you expecting that person to play?
She never uses sheets
She was smoking in two definitions
Y'all complaining about her smoking, enjoy the playing instead!

She is an example how Musicians of young age need to be taught to handle their personal lives, relationships and not resort to any unhealthy routine like drinking or smoking.
Sherlock Holmes musicians of young age? You mean young people in general surely......also you need to put her smoking , drinking etc in the context of time. Smoking was accepted then , and cool.... Most artists were smoking and drinking then....
And yet you have the name of a drinker, heavy smoker and cocaine and morphine addict as your YT username
Santiago Sánchez Santarelli I am smart enough to pick the good things. I know whats bad for me and whats good. love the name and profession but not tobacco habit. So dont worry!
byambarebyambare yeah thats true. It surely was considered cool. I wish they had more counseling then to not consider that cool as everyone knew it was unhealthy. Mostly musicians and any artists fall prey to such things coz of pressure from society and bad people around all the time.
@@sherlock5141 In that case, you should have picked the magnificent playing of Ms. Argerich instead of focusing on her habits
Wonder what brand of cigarette she is smoking here.
