As an 80s kid I never, ever tire of the 80s time setting lol. Same goes for the 90s... My comfort era. I get it though, it is done a lot. I think because that era was so just colorful, experimental, maybe even considered a bit weird. Probably makes it a fun time to set things with that whole aesthetic.
I love you reviewed this! I haven’t stopped thinking about it since I saw it last week. I have to say, Kstew had me questioning my sexuality since 😅 ***somewhat of a spoiler: I didn’t realize till after - that the beginning shows Lou cleaning the toilet and she’s basically cleaning everyone’s messes throughout the movie.
I don’t see many people talking about how Jackie became bigger when she killed JJ. There’s a shot where she’s standing over him and she’s almost ceiling height. I wasn’t hugely surprised or confused at the end because of that scene. They hinted a few times with the close ups of her muscles growing
I like how violent the character Jackie is in this movie. She beats the ever-loving sh*t out of people who piss her off. One of the saddest parts of the film is when Jackie calls home, speaks to her young brother, and then her mother takes the phone, calls her a monster, and hangs up the phone.
I’ll try not to make this long comment but I thought it was interesting that the whole movie centers around Kristin Stewart, “freeing” her sister from a abusive/toxic relationship while she was getting in one herself.
Meh not really. She was a pos. Fell in love with someone for selfish reasons. And just was looking out for the sister. Nothing about this movie is ‘deep’ to me
i really really enjoyed the humour aspects of this movie, Lou especially, it made it feel more realistic in a way that all these dramatic things are happening but the absurdity is not lost on the characters. so glad to have seen it in the theater!
The first thing I said when I left the theater to my friend was the ending had me questioning if I the could have done without it as I was really into the film until the end.
There's a distinct and comical connection to the ending early on and it had me wondering why that, in particular, was shown. It had me anticipating and hoping for a payoff. Then the ending happened and there it was! I don't think I've ever left the movie theater with a bigger smile on my face. Perfection.
@@koreighlee **Spoilers** I believe it's when Lou goes over to her sister's house, but at one point, Gulliver's Travels is playing on the TV, the scene opens close up on the screen. I knew there'd be no way for that choice to be meaningless.
Well, when Gal Gadot got picked as Wonder Woman, there was a lot of criticism because she wasn’t muscular enough but in Hollywood’s standard, she’s considered buff for the role. I feel like the Katy O’Brien was made to audition so many times because they were hoping to find someone “hotter” and muscular like how they would consider Gal Gadot muscular, mainly for the male gaze. Also when you think about the whole idea of Jackie growing bigger when she gets angry and gets pumped and veiny because she’s abusing steroids, it would kind of make sense for her character to be someone less buff, that way her transformation would be more apparent.
I wasn't a big fan of Saint Maud, but I thought this one was fantastic. It was like a story out of David Lapham's Stray Bullets comic from the 90s. I loved the ending too. This is a technique that Paul Schrader has written about. It's a particular kind of dramatic effect where the film breaks its own rules at a key moment, so a realist film lapses into magical realism and visual metaphor, for instance, to reveal the meaning of the narrative. Another example of this is the levitation scene in Paul Schrader's First Reformed.
***SPOILER**** I loved the ending you’re referring to. I think it connected and made sense to the rest of the surreal shots throughout the movie when Jackie’s muscles were growing. When she became a giant, I felt it more of a symbolic meaning of being strong and having confidence of who she was and fighting for Lou. I went to the movies with my husband because he was interested in and I’m glad we got to experience it in theaters. I didn’t watch the trailer beforehand and I kinda feel glad I didn’t because I was surprised. I was probably one of the only one in the theater who gasped and screamed at the scenes that probably were meant to be for those reactions! We left the theaters super happy and money well spent! I can’t wait to see what nominations it’ll receive next award nominations! ❤ I know this is a long comment but I was happy to see your review on the movie!
I've watched this film, and the way you described THAT ending without spoiling it, was the best way you could've done it - not seeing what's on the screen as literal. Not really spoiler, but the other WTF scene was during Jackie's bodybuilding competition, what appeared to be happening in Jackie's mind at that time. That and the ending were the two biggest 'huh?' moments for me. And i agree with you regarding the abrupt and brutal violence, it truly shocked me. I really enjoyed this movie, but i can see why it's not for everyone.
If you enjoy Kristen Stewart and haven’t seen Spencer where she portrays Princess Diana i really recommend! It’s not exploitative and is super focused on the emotion of her journey, it’s a great movie!!
It truly felt like there were two turning points where I went Oh! Like oh... this is where we are going. And they committed to the turn each time and I love them for it. The JJ reveal, and the audience gasp to go with it, committing to the violence and new, spiraling story line. And then the roid psychosis stage vomit, and the commitment to the abstract. From there, vomitting up your girlfriend? Becoming a giant? Running off into the galaxy? Killing and cleaning up a corpse for your girlfriend of like two months tops? People who do not get what it is going for do not understand lesbian culture, violent women, or humor.
*Slight Spoilers* When my friends and I saw it, we kinda thought the surrealism elements were reflective of becoming what your parents say you are (generational trauma: "You're a monster, Jackie"/Lou and helping her dad and in the end continuing on that legacy w Daisy), addiction to things they know will hurt them in the end (cigs and roids being symbolic of their general lifestyles and the choice to love one another even if it costs them everything), and then how Lou sees Jackie as "larger than life"
Haven't seen yet, but between Kristen Stewart existing and her recent Rolling Stone cover? Yeah, it could be the hottest of garbage and I would still go out of my way to watch it. So hype. JENA MALONE, TOO?! Gay panic intensifies.
Just watched it last night & Loved it! The fantasy sequence I went WTF?? Then I thought later on it was probably Lou just seeing how Jackie is larger than life in these situations. Kinda like her superhero fantasy of her. Had no idea what the story was about which is great going into.
I knocked out ALL 3 this weekend!! This one, and Late Night, Immaculate. You saved the best for last!! Late Night With the Devil, blew me away!!!! And I’m a tough critic. Looking forward to your thoughts
After braving Imaginary for the UA-cam community, i feel you can watch what you like and give any opinion you like without recrimination or need of apology. Love your no-nonsense opinions and can't wait to see this movie !!
yea im not a fan of romance either but i had nothing else to watch so i gave it a chance n i suprisingly liked it, im glad it wasn’t the typical lovey dovey romance
I am not tired of the 80's nostalgia. But, I can totally understand where you are coming from. I agree that it was better done regarding the use of the period than most 80's period things recently. Loved this movie. Perfect casting. great soundtrack. Saw it twice in the theater. Definitely a theater experience. Great review. Loved your insights. I personally loved the crazy surrealism near the end. That's why I needed to rewatch it. What did I just see? This is going to be a classic.
I 100% agree with your review and that it's a shame it didn't do better in the theater! That ending....WTF😂? We need MORE endings like this - endings that make you try to figure out just what happened and trust your mind to fill in the blanks.
I sent you an instagram message about immaculate and possibly necessary trigger warnings. I didn’t spoil anything, but I felt a warning was necessary given the themes and what you’ve spoken about on both your channels.
Loved this one. All the performances were fantastic and I loved every weird direction it took. Agreed re: Kristen Stewart as well, been a fan since her portrayal of Joan Jett. Who knew when Twilight came out that Kristen and Robert would become some great actors taking on such interesting roles?
I havent seen this movie but its just making me think.... in Final Destination 4? The one where the 2 women are in the movie theater at the mall. Dont they see a movie called Love Lies Bleeding? Its something like that.
I ADORED the ending. It caught me off guard and was just…Fantastic. It just captured me so much. It felt so relatable. It is, in the end, all about love and intensity. The ending was much like dreams I’ve had as well, so I’m kind of biased.
I feel like all the relationships were quite toxic. Daisy & her obsessiveness on Lou. Lou & her crazy killer girlfriend Jackie. Lou & her father. Lou & her sister Beth. Beth & her abusive boyfriend JJ.
The _barfing on stage scene_ was tragic. Jackie worked so hard to get to that stage, only to freak-out and toss her cookies while she was performing her moves.
i can't wait for your reviews!! I just saw immaculate, and love lies bleeding was so interesting. I wanted to see late night with the devil but the AI has made me pretty sad so i'm waiting a bit for it be online
I’m all in for the non horror reviews too!! 💚

i like that take! she very much is a fixer.
I’m full lesbian so no questioning here 😂 she is a gift that keeps on giving
Or how Lou had become consumed by Jackie
The ending is a metaphor, it's explained in a line her character says when she first meets Lou Sr. Great film.
I don’t see many people talking about how Jackie became bigger when she killed JJ. There’s a shot where she’s standing over him and she’s almost ceiling height. I wasn’t hugely surprised or confused at the end because of that scene. They hinted a few times with the close ups of her muscles growing
i was WAITING for you to review this
Yay I’m happy you did a review on this! Loved this movie. I always love seeing Kristen and I hope to see Katy O’Brian in a lot more projects now too
The ending worked for me. Audible gasps in certain moments in my screening. The ending def got some laughter and some groans. I loved it

i’m SO excited to hear what you thought of Immaculate bc i was so surprised by how good it was, i think best horror release of the year so far tbh
We don't get it in the UK until May and I'm so excited for it.
I’ll try not to make this long comment but I thought it was interesting that the whole movie centers around Kristin Stewart, “freeing” her sister from a abusive/toxic relationship while she was getting in one herself.
I thought it was to symbolize Lou taking her sister's pain away from her essentially.
Meh not really. She was a pos. Fell in love with someone for selfish reasons. And just was looking out for the sister. Nothing about this movie is ‘deep’ to me
Can't wait to hear your thoughts on Immaculate!
Immaculate was very underwhelming
Same! I feel like people either love it or hate it
Me too! It was so effective for me imo
Is that Sarah on Sarah’s shirt? I’M CONFUSED 😂
Thanks for this review ! I was on the fence to watch it and now I will
Appreciate these past no spoiler reviews you've done! Thank you ♡
Waiting for Late Night with the Devil review!!!
sameee

I watched this movie specifically because of your thumbnail and was not disappointed, loved hearing your review after seeing it!
I honestly appreciate your reviews. Your reviews help me decide if watching these movies is worth my times 😂
So glad you loved it! I did too. Kristen Stewart was amazing in it.
I typically like K Stew's acting but I didn't care for her in this movie

Something I just remembered too is that Lou is trying to kick nicotine, which can cause hallucinations.
@@christenmichelle89 omg I never would've picked up on this! I've never read/watched Gulliver's Travels. Thanks for explaining!

But the Wonder Woman character isn't that muscular. She's more leaner than a female body builder.
Absolutely LOVED this movie. I rarely rate films five stars, but this one definitely earned it.
Loved it. Not sure of any horror adjacent movie will top it for me the rest of the year. Thanks for the review.

When I saw Clint Mansell’s credit pop up I got even more excited than I already was. Great score!
His score for The Fountain is absolutely gorgeous ❤️
@@silkcatgirl3597 I agree. His best work was with Aronofsky but he still creates great scores
Wait what?! I was literally just listening to his score from Black Swan. I had no idea that he composed this too!
So glad to hear your thoughts on this movie and that you liked it 🥰
This is the movie they watch in The Final Destination

I really thought Sarah was teasing new merch with herself on her t-shirt 😂
Love love love this movie it literally finally kicked my butt to pursue film school. A certain purple clouds scene is so euphoric
Literally about to see it for a 3rd time at the time that I'm writing this. I adore this movie so much.
I had no idea what to expect when I saw this movie last week. I loved it. I also enjoyed hearing Throbbing Gristle in the movie.
the ending was like a fever dream 😁 loved it. But I'm glad there wasn't too much of it

I thought the same thing about the good music in this.
Still don’t get the ending w the dad
I just watched it last night. I loved it. The actress who played Jackie should've been She Hulk
I went through so many emotions with that ending but now that I've sat on it a few days.. it's a big swing and I love it. I'm glad you liked it too.
I thought it was an homage to the classic B movie, Attack of the 50 foot Woman.

So many movies are set in the 80s because it was the best decade. 😉
this is the best movie so far this year, regardless of genre. absolutely amazing
I just saw this film yesterday, and holy smokes! It may not be a Horror movie, but some of those scenes are pure Nightmare Fuel!

What difference does it make what decade or whatever you are talking about, if the movie is good, it's good.
