...Black Jamaicans are of African descent...so yes, it is incorrect to call her African-American, but I understand why it happens. Some Americans haven't figured out that it's okay to call us Black, and haven't realized that Black is a "racial" classification, while African-American is an ethnicity. Not going to lie though, it is a bit frustrating for our community (speaking as someone who, like VP Harris, is half Jamaican) that people won't call her what she is. It's getting a bit better though. At least people are starting to realize that we prefer to be called Black/ethnicity to not erase our ethnic identities. Sigh.

Basically, you could technically say any Black person born on American soil is African-American, but the problem is, you're conflating race with ethnicity. And that's because ethnicity refers to cultural affiliation, language, history, etc. If someone is Asian American, or white, or an immigrant from an African country, it's pretty simple to identify by ethnicity. You can say you're Kenyan American or Korean American or Italian American etc. But for those of us who are descendants of enslaved African people, ethnic identity is complicated by the fact that our ancestors were violently stripped of their various ethnic identities/cultures/languages etc. We have no real, remembered ties to our ancestral cultures, so we identify by the cultures that our ancestors created in the absence of further histories. So those various cultures identify as Afro/African-(fill in national/cultural identity here). So, in the Americas, among descendants of enslaved Africans, you have Afro-Dominicans, Afro-Brazilians, Afro, Trinidadians, Afro-Colombians, Afro-Jamaicans, Afro-Americans etc. (It's not widely known, Afro-American was the original title in the 60s/70s. It was changed to African-American later on, towards the end of the 20th century). Each one of these terms refers to a specific ethnic identity, with a distinct culture, history, and linguistic tradition. All of these people are Black, which is the racial term by which we identify ourselves, but the ethnicities are distinct and separate. African-American people have a distinctive, vibrant and globally influential culture, not to mention a history, that is distinctly different from the other cultures referenced. So while it's true that we are all of African descent, and are Americans, we don't all share the same culture and history and linguistic traditions. I'm second generation, VP Harris is first generation. Our parents/grandparents came here very recently, and voluntarily, so we have a different history in this country from African-Americans, who have been here for centuries. You could say this is all very arbitrary, but complex realities require precise language. When you refer to African-Americans the normal and correct assumption is that you're referring to people whose ancestors have lived here for generations, which is not true in my case, or VP Harris'. In order to acknowledge and be respectful of someone's identity, it's better to acknowledge what their specific ethnicity is, instead of using a term that may not be accurate in context. I'm a Black, Caribbean American (my grandparents come from 3 different countries, so I'm simplifying). Kamala is a Black/South Asian Jamaican/Indian American. But when it comes to race, it's fine to say Black. Most of us prefer it, actually.
