"cheong" being his surname would mean his father is chinese (cheong/chong is a very common chinese surname here). a lot of ppl in malaysia are not "ethnically" malaysian. oh, i forgot to mention that if his mom is indigineous (orang asli, etc., not malay), that could explain why he has "miles" in his name as a large part of the indigenous are christian. other than that, idk, he might have chosen the "miles" thing for himself or his parents just gave it to him regardless lol. but, yes, he is at least half chinese (unless he is lying/fabricated his name). he could also be full chinese. i've met some people along the way who have english middle names but are full chinese lol. we're a very mixed/diverse population haha

I had a classmate who basically had the same kind of surname (first name english, middle name english, surname chinese) whose mother is white and has a malaysian-chinese father 👍👍 there is a smaller group of the population here - children who have a local parent and a caucasian mother/father - usually, these children get sent to the international schools here (which are much more expensive and focuses more on english-speaking curriculum and non-malaysian curriculum), so, idk, perhaps that is also the case with ian 😅😅

There's a few simple reason for this, free speech or to be more specific political discourse an overall criticism against the government is not really a thing in Malaysia. There a 50/50 chance that you spend a few years in prison all because you criticized a member of Parliament or a government minister, if I'm also correct there's also a law similar to the one in Thailand in which you can serve serious jail time for even criticizing any royals. You don't get that much scrutiny (or at the very least you won't end up in a prison cell) when you're talking about another country's politics, and when you consider the financial benefits for being a right-wing grifter it's not much of a mystery for a egotistical, petty, unhinge, greedy sociopath like Cheong to follow suit.
