- This is our first episode of a new annual VLOG series we are dubbing VLOG-i-NATION - where Beekeepers from all over the nation come to California for Almond Pollination!
In this video, Commercial Beekeeper and Queen Breeder, Jose Uribe, heads to Williams, California to meet up with Don and Brandon Bryant of Bryant Honey, Inc. They are a commercial honey producing outfit out of Worland, Wyoming who run 5,500 hives throughout 8 counties in Wyoming, 2 counties in South Dakota, as well as in Nebraska.
Brandon will briefly discuss an array of components relating to almond pollination - from what happens to the hives prior to coming to California to what occurs upon arrival all the way until touch down into the orchard.
Follow along for a fun time placing the honeybees into the almond orchards. If you are familiar with commercial beekeeping and California Almond Pollination, then this may be second nature to you. If you are not, and are curious what this process is like, then this is the video for you!
We are trying out some different ideas for the channel. Let us know if you like the videos and we will bring ya’ll more!
If you are new to our channel, welcome! We are a small family owned and operated commercial apiary located in Northern California. We've been commercial beekeeping for the past 12 years, but branched off and opened Uribe Honey Bees in January of 2019. We specialize in queen breeding, pollination services, hive management and brokering.
Thank you for watching and supporting us! We love you guys!

This is a very good video Jose. Thanks for letting us in on it. Good luck out there buddy.
Well my friend, we appreciate you watching and happy you enjoyed it. We worked hard on that one, Kelly and I. Thank you for watching
I love watching commercial beekeeping. Such a great trade. Wish I could’ve gotten into beekeeping at a younger age and been able to work for a commercial outfit and then build my own. Oh well, glad I could at least become a hobbiest and be profitable enough to enjoy the hobby side. Oh but to have been a commercial beekeeper. Glad you guys share the experiences with us!!
Mike, so good to hear you enjoyed this video. I was so pumped to meet up with our friends from Wyoming. Big or small Mike we all share the same passion and I've learned from both big and small. You have alot of good content that's very useful and helpful. Hope you enjoy our future videos on this series🤙 Thanks for watching Mike
Hi Jose. From the cook islands. Video was Cool & very interesting.👍
Alistair! Good to hear and not as cool as us having you watch us from the Cook Islands, that's cool to us. Thanks for watching
I'm just getting ready for next year I will be doing splits this spring and continue to grow my apiary and be ready for next spring. I have learned a lot from your videos. Maybe I'll meet you some day in the fields.
Where are you from Eric? I’m sure we will meet someday, god willing 🤙🏼
@The California Beekeeper I'm in Canyon country with my apiary on 60 acres in bouquet canyon. Still learning lots, like the value in requeening vs letting them breed on their own. Next I need to learn how to make a queen mating area.
Bro this video was intense! Crazy how much work goes into getting the bees shipped and ready to go into the field! Thanks for sharing this with us!
Doesn't it just pump you up!? Yeah we have alot more content ideas that we are going to try out. Glad you enjoyed it my man!🤜🤛
@@TheCaliforniaBeekeeper heck yea it does bro!!! I didn’t know their was that much pressure getting em off the trailers too! That’s awesome! I can’t believe we’re at that time already! Guys are mummy shaking and the buds are coming in already out here in the Merced/chowchilla area! If your still up in Williams try out Granzellas inn/restaurant! Place is bomb!
Yeah it go time when semis roll in on a warm day. Granzellas is pretty good, I've been going to that place throughout my life. I grew up as a kid in Colusa County so Williams was up the road. The spot you need to try is Riverbank Pizza in Colusa! Hands down my favorite pizza EVER
@@TheCaliforniaBeekeeper next time I’m up there I’m guna have to try it! Place sounds great! That’s awesome it’s beautiful country up there! I go up there occasionally to the coe factory for parts and stuff so I’ll for sure be checking that place out!
Let me know what you think. It's funny when I think about that area(Colusa County) I always tell people to try it😆
I really enjoyed this video
Thank you for watching Jason and Thanks for the feedback 🤙
Hi loved the video regards from West Aust
@Badbee thank you for the feedback and watching. Hello from Northern California 👋
Man great job with the video. I have a few colonies out there right now. Second year. Just getting started on my journey. This is a great look at what happens when the bees get to California. Thanks!
Bruce! That's awesome! How are you enjoying sending your girls and getting them back looking amazing? Where are your bees at?
@@TheCaliforniaBeekeeper I’m located in South Alabama. Friends with @dmacshack (Instagram). I think you guys follow each other. Worked out well for us last year. Hoping for good results this year. He has quite a few more than me. Between @dmacshack, myself and another friend or two maybe we can get a truck together for next year. Maybe can make it out there in the next couple of years to see it from that end. It amazes me.
I'm sure you guys can round up a truck. Give us a holler if you fellas need a broker🤙
awesome video
Excellent! Thank you Clinton
It’s nice to see professionals at work. Oh and when your numbers don’t add up, that’s called bee math! You count them one way you get one number, you count them the other way you get a different number.
Indeed Sergei! Lol I was just explaining bee math to Kelly and how that is a bee joke "bee math" lol
Especially late or morning hours..you keep counting and counting while half asleep..lol
Hahaha😆 we all have those days this time of season.😵
Jose needs his own morning show ☕️
haha I love having my cup of Joe and responding to you guys! Thanks for watching Mark!
Great video I was wondering how many hives is on a semi load? thanks for all your videos.
Hello Dave, on an average a semi will have 408-456 hives depending on bed style and equipment style(8 frame or 10frame)
Hola José, somos apicultores de chile. Maravilloso video, la bolsa cuadrada que colocas en las colmenas es polen? El polen es natural o mezcla de proteína? Muchas Gracias 👍
Hola Fernando. Es polen mezcla de protiena
Gracias amigo
Not sure if this is in line with your experience or not (especially since you live there and don't need to migrate there), but would love to have some information on getting my bees into pollination. Steps to take, use a broker or not (if so, good broker to use), contracts, what to watch out for, etc.....it seems like I remember reading somewhere that people will come pick up your hives and place them there, feed them, treat them, etc. and then return them....
Edit: forgot to say that I really appreciated this video. Was very interesting to watch.
Blain, reach out @ uribehoneybees@gmail.com we can talk man
Was wondering what was that additional pouch in the beehives that I saw when they placed the supplement? Curiousity ☺️
A varroa mite treatment
Nice job on filming, editing and putting in some music too. Enjoyed it. Extra pallets underneath if heavy rains are predicted ?
Todd, Thank you! The storms syare moving in fast and fortunately the ground is absorbing most of the water🙏 You are correct though, when we expect areas to get flooded we place however many pallets we need so that the bee pallet sits high enough that it doesn't get water damage.
Good show. Narrate a whole lot more and explain/teach as much as you can, what, why, how come...helps.
Tadd thank you for watching glad you enjoyed, as we continue to grow we also continue to learn what you (our viewers) want. Thanks for the feedback my man!
@@TheCaliforniaBeekeeper moving to 300 hives this year as a 1 man show. It is very interesting how things are done on a grand scale and the logic behind it all and how all the moving parts are supposed to work. Rather frustrating here in HI where some mainland stuff just dont apply. Tadd
Jose the hives that are sent for pollination, are the hive owners responsible for coming and taking care of the hives or is that done by who rents them? I'm interested in getting started in pollination but I want to get more info. Basically looking for what the hive owner is responsible for. Thank you and great videos you have!
@John email us any questions you have and we would be happy to help you @ Uribehoneybees@gmail.com Thanks for watching
Question: Don't they lose all the field bees when they move them the short distance from the outside of the orchard to into the orchards as bloom pops?
No. Bees are kept in a holding yard miles away. Bees will adjust as long as its over 2 miles from their original yard
Sidelined here in Riverton Wy. Just South of Worland. Enjoy your content and will be following you. There a lot of bees that make it to Ca. From Wy.for the almonds!!
sidelined
Stupid spell check...side liner.
Brad thanks for watching and glad you found us. How many hives do you run there in Riverton? Yes there is alot of bees from Wyoming that make it out thos way. Larry Krouse is from Riverton, he recently sold out to Bryant Honey Inc.
All good man, spell check gets the best of us 🤷🏻♂️😄. BTW you guys have the best Mexican restaurant I've tried in Wyoming. El Sol is so good😋
@@TheCaliforniaBeekeeper I run 20 production hives and have about that many “Nucs” as I raise my own Queens and also sell excess nucs
@@TheCaliforniaBeekeeper Also didn’t know that Larry had sold out to Bryants. They must be running a very large operation.
I've watched the film "More than Honey" which included almond pollination. Are the almond growers diversifying with other flowers to attract the bees or is it still a monofloral. I seem to remember there was talk of making them multifloral for the sake of the bees.
There is some growers that plant mustard or other flowering plants between rows. There is also this an organization called Project Apis, they help growers with seeds to plant
@@TheCaliforniaBeekeeper Thanks, that is nice to know.
I feel the same way. Bees need it🙌
watching the tip backs I counted 8 frames. Is it now standard to use 8 frame hives instead of 10 frame equipment?
Hello Karen, there are beekeepers that run 8 frame equipment. Its a trend we have seen that more and more convert over to 8 frame. its preferen. This outfit here though has been running 8 frame equipment long before most guys. Thanks for watching Karen
Does it matter if you spread the hives out in almond orchards? Or can you leave the hives clumped in a couple spots and let the bees do their thing?
It definitely matters for the growers. Usaully growers have field advisors that give them a map on how they should spread their bees out evenly. Almond pollination requires 2-2.5 colonies per acre. Will bees still pollinate if left in a holding yard(?) No doubt they do but, they still map our drops in order to produce the highest yields. Hope that answers your question Chundun. Thanks for watching 🤙
The California Beekeeper thank you!
Absolutely 👍
When they're putting the pollen sub on there are small green patties in the hives, what are those?
Essential oils for mite treatment
@@TheCaliforniaBeekeeper Kelly we found this recipe works well in controlling Varroa,-256 tb.per u.s.gal.
74%Thyme oil
16% Eucalyptus oil
4%Menthol oil
4%Camphor
What does -256 t.b. per u.s gallon stand for?
@@TheCaliforniaBeekeeper is a measurement of how many tablespoons are in a gallon.
@@allsmilz7234 what holds that mix together, crisco?
Will there be a vlogination-2 coming up?
Yes! We are planning on making more next almond pollination season!
Hello how many beehives do you have in total? i'm french i watch your videos
We are a smaller outfit, we run 300 colonies and 1200 nucs. Thanks for watching and Hello from Northern California 👋
How much you charge for almonds pollination this year per hive ?
Standard price is $200 for 8 frame average this year
🤗✌👍💝💖🇧🇷
Are those 8 or 10 frame colonies?
We run 10 frame equipment with 9 frame(slots) so it's not too tight.
