Serena actually moved well and played well, just has a really low first serve percentage and was missing shots that could’ve been winners. If she can find her serve and find the lines, she can do well. Faced a really consistent, good clay court player in Podoroska who just made the SF of RG.

But to put it plainly, she wasn’t at her sharpest in terms of execution (below 50% first serves would just not cut it if the opponent is playing solid tennis) and that cost her. This is tough for me to watch Serena like this because I've been
watching her since she Venus and her broke onto the scene as teenagers.
Serena is an overweight, middle-aged woman right now and she'll never
win another major unless she makes a real effort to get in shape. The
quickness is gone. She can still move really well, but that ability to
change direction quickly just isn't there as evidenced by here getting
wrong-footed by so many shots. She still has power to spare and the
serve is a major weapon, but it hurts to watch this woman who I barely
    recognize out there.

That fourth game was a perfect example of the kind of intensity and agression Serena needs to bring and maintain throughout the match. She brought some of it late in the purple patch from 2-5 to 5-5 (although there were some errors from Nadia) in the second set. Of course it’s easier said than done but there’s still time to the French Open and at least we know that Serena does still have that instinct in her.

And we can't necessarily compare what she did in 07 and 08 to what she's doing these days since age is a big factor in her endurance. no matter who you are or what kind of athlete you are, age affects how you play and as a result how often you should play to allow your body to recover. If she had skipped this tournament entirely and went straight from AO semis to Roland garros, that would be a different story. But at least she entered this tournament. I just don’t get why she keeps doing this to herself though.
If she’s only playing for it’s sake, that would cool but for someone who really wants to win a few more slams, what’s the point of not putting in the effort by skipping 3-4 tournaments after AO21?
Does Serena really want to beat Court’s record?
I doubt it otherwise she wouldn’t be slacking like that.
The sluggishness is as a result of not playing enough warmup tournaments before grand slams when that’s what’s going to get her into a proper shape to win against those that really matter.
After 3/4 matches in a grand slam, she looks very exhausted and the errors become worse.
Is Patrick not willing to ask her to put up or stop playing at all?
If only she’s prepared to make the sacrifices just for the rest of the year by skipping the “happy families” drama around her, then going into boot camp would serve her well.
Serena in top shape would beat these gals.
      Halfhearted measures won’t work.

I agree with most comments here, Serena at this stage in her career can’t expect to show up after a 3-5 month lay off and expect to win. Missing Miami definitely hurt. But she’s had opportunities to enter tournaments even after her withdrawal from Miami. She could win Wimbledon, she could be competitive at the French, but unfortunately she makes the conscious choice to only care about the majors. She did not play bad here. Yes, her serve was off but I thought she moved decently. Serena is her own worst enemy... she knows she needs to play more events but I honestly think she just doesn’t want to.

Serena movement is meh. She did good moving at Aussie Open and had 3-4 months to take it to the next level. It’s kind of obvious she didn’t do intense conditioning cause 3-4 months she could’ve been back to 2012-2017 fitness. Not liking what Patrick has done with her forehand technique since 2018 either.
Maybe it’s just lack of match play. You can’t win Slams being a part time player the rest of the year.

She is pushing 40 and if she expects to contend she will need more matches under her belt. She could get away with that in her early 30's because she was just better than most of the girls and she had that aura of invincibility and the intimidatuon factor working in her favor. Now the girls aren't intimidated and they're younger and eager to win, especially against an aging legend.

Honestly I think it's a bit of a double edged sword. I agree that she needs to play more matches but at the same time if she plays too many matches, that's a lot of wear and tear on her body at 40. She's more prone to injury and can't recover fast if something happens and then just go play another tournament. It's kind of a tough situation where she has to be careful with how and when she plays these days. But she does need more matches.
