  • The Curves tool in Photoshop is the single most powerful photo editing tool ever created. There, I said it! This video completely demystifies it once and for all.

Thank you for a clear and concise video on curves. I've used it for years but your explanations still brought things into greater clarity and will help me going forward

Very well presented. A lot of work and thought went into preparing this video and I really appreciated the result. I've sent it to friends....

Personally, it was a bit long winded but you are trying to explain to someone that had never used Curves, so it may have been a useful exercise after all. I did learn something new about the targeted adjustment tool by default. The tip about the black and white triangles plus the Alt key along the X-axis would have been passing on. However you have to draw a line somewhere... but then that's the trouble, you only touched about half the things in that one adjustment box, no one really does a top to toe (Curves to the delete icon) explanation of these things, not even Adobe, they just assume that we know.
The picture of the Buachaille Etive Mor is certainly different, it may not have been the best image to use, the blur effect may tend to put people off.
One more thing, it's the same with the explanations of the Tone Curve in LR, no one really makes contrast adjustments in respect to the actual peaks on the tone curve, they just plonk the arbitrary 25% and 75% points down on the curve and make a standard S-curve...and there's a default preset for that in the Curves dialogue box!

Apparently people don't relate to the fact that the histogram *might* be telling us where there's too much or too little brightness. But then again there is no easy tool in PS that lets you see light intensities as 'zones' in the image. Silver FX plugin has an Ansel Adams styled gray zone divisions that can be of help. And then it seems we have a nice trend these days about believing that digital is about "presets" and film, with it's really complex embedded curves adjustments because of their different formulations and development possibilities ... well, films are "magic". Connecting the dots is not an easy task.
You are absolutely right in saying Adobe assumes a lot about people being able to guess things. The L.AB color space is the historical core of how PS was created and developed and, although there are two rather hard to read books on it by an interesting author, Adove itself never even mentions color spaces of how their gamma is not consistent from LR to PS to PDFs. Those of us who print will find out by trial and error.
Interesting comment, so I stopped by to try to add to it. Hope it worked. :o)

I enjoyed your video. There were several negative comments about it but here is my two cents. Yes you did take about 20 minutes to "demystify" the curves tool and it's true you could have probably shortened it a bit. However, I watched the video and I already knew how to use curves. So why did I watch it? Because there are many times when I watch something I get a better understanding or I learn a little tip that I didn't know about. For those who had negative comments I say move on to a video that you do like and don't complain. It's not like he charged you for it. If you have some valuable constructive ideas by all means suggest them but don't be such a jerk. I do have one question regarding how the tonal values are linked on the 45 degree curve. I understand when I select a point on a curve and move it up or down it makes an adjustment for the adjacent points. Can you provide an explanation as to why these are linked and why the particular point isn't the only one affected when moving it up or down?

Click bait. Nothing new. I wouldn't enjoy you classes. 20 minutes to explain something that could be explained in 2. And why the screen shots. Just do it on the fly. I played this at 2x and my eyes still rolled so far behind my head, one got stuck.

Thanks for taking the time to comment. While I appreciate your point of view, not everyone learns in the same way or at the same speed. You know nothing about me so how can you possibly know whether or not you’d enjoy my classes? You think you understand me based on one video? Should I make a judgement about you based entirely on your comments? I’ve been teaching for a long time and the methods I use are the ones that have been tested and were successful in the classroom. It must be nice to already know everything. If this is something you already know or if it doesn’t interest you, why not just move on in silence? I’m sure there are plenty of other tutorials on UA-cam that would interest you. It never ceases to amaze me that anyone would complain about a video that someone took the time to produce and then give away for free. Find something more productive to do with your time. And the next time you want to blast someone’s work, try to remember that there’s a human being on the other end of your comments and behave accordingly. It’s easy to throw a nasty comment at someone and then slink away. I’m sure you wouldn’t appreciate it if you were the one on the receiving end of your own comments. I truly hope you enjoy your day.

@@JimWelninski naming something demystify makes me feel like it's something, well, demystifying. These are basics. Call them basics. Otherwise it's click bait and you know it.

@Jim Welninski: YT is full of mean-spirited schlubs, with an overinflated sense of their own worth, and happy to throw stones from under the cloak of anonymity. Be assured there are tons of us who have improved from, and hence fully appreciate, your valuable insights.
