Lens: SLR Magic 8mm f/4
Camera: Lumix GX85 (4K 24p at 1/50s)
Picture profile: Natural (Contrast 0, Sharpness -5, NR -5, Colour 0)
Additional equipment: Tiffen ND 0.9, B+W ND 1.8, Promaster graduated ND 0.6
Things to note:
(1) I received a production copy lens for review via SLR Magic’s sponsorship volunteer program.
(2) To get the most satisfactory results I locked the hyperfocal distance at 1 metre and set the f-stop to f/5.6-f/8 for all shots in the video.
(3) This is not a technical review. It is more a showcase how I might use the lens creatively in different lighting situations.
My observations and impressions (in no particular order):
- Robust, all-metal construction in matte black.
- Extremely small and lightweight.
- Filter threads in both 46mm and 52mm extremely useful feature.
- Centre sharpness at f/5.6 to f/8 very good.
- Focus lock is quite useful.
- Stepless aperture ring with good dampening.
- Minimal barrel distortion.
- Corner sharpness lacking across all f-stops.
- Lens element rotates with focus ring.
- Focus locking pin very tiny and prone to fall out when loosened.
- Front lens element protrudes slightly, causing thin filters to come in contact with lens before being fully screwed on.
- Flares very easily (even in indirect light).
- Slight vignetting and chromatic aberration visible at all f-stops.
- Video crop factor helps reduce appearance of soft corners.
- Lens pairs well with 5-axis stabilization for handheld work.
- Image produced is not technically “perfect” but has character that I personally did not find displeasing.
- 8mm field of view a versatile focal length.
Who’s this lens for?
- Budget-conscious videographers looking for an affordable ultra-wide angle rectilinear lens.
- Drone videographers or small 3-axis gimbal operators.
- Cameras with a high crop factor like the BMPCC.
- Lens will pair well with small-body cameras like the GX850, PEN-F, etc. for an ultraportable ultra-wide angle combo.
- Those that can appreciate the unique character of the image produced.
- Those that primarily work in video mode that wish to use ND filters with a fixed shutter.

I've had this lens for a few weeks and really love it. You did a fine job of showcasing it here.
Your images and approach remind me of Steven Soderbergh. This video convinced to me give the 8mm a reappraisal and now I love it.
I keep coming back to this video every few weeks because the visuals & music make me so happy. I'm getting major Fincher vibes, great work!
Thank you so much!
wonderful-beautiful shots
one of the best shorts with this lens and in general! well done. really inspiring.
thank you!
Masterful shots! Great camera moves and even greater grading. When I grow up I like to become a cinematographer like you are
Thank you so much!
These were BEAUTIFUL shots! 🖤🖤🖤
This is the kind of stuff I wanted to see. Thank you very much.
thanks for your comment.

Was thinking about picking up this lens....that first shot has me sold.
That's exactly what happened to me too!
Thanks for this, you've gained a subscriber today!
Thanks, Jeff!
good job! subbed
Great stuff, how did you make this music? what app/software did you use?
GREAT LOOKING VIDEO, very inspiring - BUT - what camera did you use? Was is graded or right from camera? what FPS did you use (24?) Any problems using this lens while shooting?
Buenisimo. Do you feel good about the f4 in low light?
Why is this lens so nice for those who wish to use ND filters please?
good stuff! whats the diameter of this lens? I want to throw a black pro mist filter on this...also, what step up ring size would you recommend please?
This is fucking gorgeous!
A. mazing. The opening shot. Did you use a slider? What is the name of this track? So much intense drama.
No, I just a tripod. Tipped it on two legs. Name of track? I don't know. I wrote it myself for copyright issues. I called it 'Barryessa' for the sake of a file name!
wow, this cheap 8mm really does the job!
Hello do you make a crop? or the video cover the full sensor from the gx85 ?
no need to crop, although the GX85 will crop slightly nevertheless if the in-body image stabilizer is engaged.
@@kountmichula WOW, thanks! I thinking in buy the same lens to my G85
Did you color grade this or the video is straight from the camera?
No grading, just using the GX85 Natural picture profile in-camera.
I feel like so much of what I shoot with this I get a washed glare across it, how do you avoid it?
I think it may be a byproduct of the lens coating (or lack thereof). It is a characteristic of the lens.
Maybe try lens hood?
Dude WHAT are those shades at 0:52????? cool or what?
maybe matsuda?
Did you film in 1080p on the GX85?
No, the 4K setting.
Is this a native lens for the BMPCC 4K?
yes it is.
What's the name of the music
The music is something I made for the video. It has no name.
@@kountmichula that's cool! Is there anywhere else I can listen to your music, like soudcloud ?
@@1dollardrew I'm afraid not. That was my first attempt. I do have a couple mixtapes/DJ mixes on SC under my own name from last year but they do not contain any original material.
Great examples. What rig did you use to get the 0:21 shot?
Strictly lo-fi: I just tilted my tripod forward!
Michael Mills Awesome. Same thing for the 0:10 opening shot?
Not quite. I can set my tripod column horizontally on the legs. I then just loosened the clamp and slid the column like a dolly move.
Awesome tactic. Have you had any weird issues with a small circle of the center being out of focus? Mine seems to do that whenever I throw a 0.9 nd on it.
Yes I have. It occurs because the ND filter is touching the front element of the lens when screwed on snugly. Try leaving the ND a bit loose in the screw-mount to alleviate the problem. A definite design flaw.
Just want to let you know, that this video and the review on cheesy cam.basicly sells me this lens over the 7.5mm gj
Great!
Thanks!
Impressions? Lol
1:24 looks out of focus.
