This was one of my favorite songs to sing in my best lounge singer's voice to my wife and partner of 35 years, who passed away 14 months ago. She'd just laugh and laugh. Today was the first day I've had the strength to listen to it. It's brought a few tears to my eyes but also many sweet memories.
It's his most spiritual album for me, I've always felt that and I am a lifelong fan. It's ironic that he made those gospel albums and although they are good this really touches my soul because it's all about the search for salvation, but there he had found it. Well ... allegedly. Some people claim that they are parody albums ... "It may be the 😈 or it may be The LORD ... "
Well, let's keep it a secret, whaddaya say? 😉 It might get used on a TV commercial for anti-perspirants. 😐 I was in 10th grade, bought the album---still have it. Have searched the cover photo intensely for the hidden Beatle faces. 🧐

I just saw this on a song list, from one of his concerts from this week I immediately came to UA-cam and just now finding out he did sing this song on an album. Amazing 😍❤
It is beyond me why so many count Bob Dylan as a rock artist. His music has so much more to do with country music than rock music. He recorded folk, blues, hillbilly/country, even some old fashioned pop but there is very little rock in his music.
@ThatKidWhoLiesAboutHisAge OnTheInternet Bob Dylan didn't record "blues rock" or "folk rock", just blues and folk without any rock influence. Led Zeppelin and Johnny Winter are blues rock.
@ThatKidWhoLiesAboutHisAge OnTheInternet John Wesley Harding is a country/folk album rather than "folk rock album". I don't hear any rock music in this song.
@ThatKidWhoLiesAboutHisAge OnTheInternet I don't think you need to be hard rock heavy to be considered rock. The Cure, U2, The Cranberries are not heavy yet I consider them 100% rock. Bob Dylan's music is much closer to hillbilly/country than rock music. And "Americana" is just another vague, meaningless term used by music journos. Because what exactly is "Americana"? Is it folk? Blues? Country? Rockabilly? Bluegrass? What???
@ThatKidWhoLiesAboutHisAge OnTheInternet No, I'm not. There is almost no electric guitar on that album. And when it's present it's very weak sounding, almost like an acoustic guitar. Listen to Chuck Berry, Link Wray, The Rolling Stones, The Kinks, The Who - that's rock.
This tune and lyrics would have been a big hit in the golden age of Tin Pan Alley - just goes to show you that Dylan's talent it real, AMERICAN and fits in perfectly in this song with the classic American Songbook.
I had heard that song by other singers lots of times but I was riding down the highway one day and I heard that on the radio and that's what I thought it was the best song I'd ever it was the best it was the best version of this song that I had ever heard I really kind of blew me away
To me, there is elements of blues, folk and country in this song. Bob Dylan can do all three styles of music pretty well. This is a taste of what we would get on Nashville Skyline, where Bob Dylan would do country music.
