      An entire month-long segment of one game (we were young and played twice a week, so it was 8 sessions) was in a dream but the PCs didn't realize it until the end. The god of nightmares had ensnared them, and things just kept getting worse and worse for them. Whenever one of them would die (they were high level so they'd just resurrect their own people), I would pull that person aside and say "So, when you died, you woke up in the nightmare temple... where you've been this entire time. Don't tell anyone, and play your 'resurrected character' like it's secretly a villain...

Caleb in C2 is a wizard and can ritual cast it from his spellbook without having to prepare it.

    In regards to Magic Item Knowledge and Identify...
    Keep in mind they came from a Pathfinder game, which is basically D&D 3.5; a system which did indeed have rules in ragards to magic items, and needing to identify them before you just slap them on. Most of the time, you need Identify, Analyze Dweomer, or a Use Magic Item or Spellcraft check to figure out 1 or all of the functions of a magic item (The exception is Artificers, who can basically do all that with a Spellcraft/UMD check from class abilities).
    5E really did that terribly, because that had been a core restraint on players with magic items since the beginning... "Quick, get the Magic-User/Wizard to see what this does!". Also, there weren't restraints on how many magic items you could have...which, I think is 5E's detriment, because it would compensate those 12-17 levels still have SOMETHING, because you'd have magic item expansions to draw on...
    I have many, MANY, complaints as to the methods of 5E madness WotC put into the game... probably why I haven't played it for years, and wont run it anymore; but that stuff was always a "thorn in my side"...annoying, but wasn't a deal breaker.
    ...no, the deal breaker was WotC bastardising every other setting to be compatible with their "Forgettable Realms", turning Eberron into "Wand-guns", and making almost every new subclass a power creep!
    ...sorry, Iv gone slightly off topic! LOL!

    As a GM, there's a small thing here that shows a commonly repeated rule of GMing isn't 100% true.
    You can tell your player how their character feels.
    Matt uses the dreams and describes the feelings characters have in the moment. When Matt describes Grog laughing, Travis joins in with it and takes the ride. You don't show Scanlon's save against Craven Edge, but the way Matt describes Scanlon's own selfimage and charisma beating Craven Edge literally causes Sam to straighten up in pride and confidence.
    As GMs, we are describing the world and feelings are part of that description. You can't tell the player how the character acts or reacts, but you can tell them the feelings they get and let them react to them as their character.
    But also don't use strong language. Use subtlety like Matt. Don't say a character is afraid. Say, they quiver as they stamp their feet ready to push back. Your job isn't to control the character, but to communicate to the player the experience.

    • @dontmisunderstand6041
      @dontmisunderstand6041 7 місяців тому +3

      To properly do this, you have to understand the subtle difference between emotions and the incoming stimuli that cause them. Behind a feeling of fear is an uneasy tension. Attentiveness. Not everyone responds the same to the triggering of a fight-or-flight response, and by telling them their response it can feel like you're taking away their agency. Ideally, you don't tell your players what their character feels, but you can tell them enough about the sensations they experience to make them reach the conclusion you want them to reach about how they feel. This is actually how authors operate, fun fact. Because fictional characters (at least well written ones) aren't just puppets to the author's whim, they're fully realized people that just happen to not exist. So to some extent, any good author needs to have this deep empathetic understanding of the human mind, as well as a knack for what is essentially emotional manipulation.
      So yeah. The very subtle difference between emotion and the physical sensations that go with them is a distinction you want to be able to both make for yourself and convince others of, as a DM.

    I love Grog as a character, especially how much he balances the berserker feel of being a big strong barbarian with his gentleness towards his friends. Craven Edge is such a perfect way to drive that home, since the points where they diverge in interests are the highlights of Grog as a character. (SPOILERS) It's also perfect that the Craven Edge arc is starting to ramp towards an ending right as Grog is getting a power boost from the Knuckles and the Blood Axe, and I question if Matt had that planned or if that happened organically.

    I think most Critters would agree that any of the players would be an amazing addition to their table. If I was allowed to invite one of them, it would be Travis.
    Hw does so very well with:
    1) being a cheerleader for the other players (and Matt's maps)
    2) sharing the spotlight
    2a) drawing others into a moment
    3) playing his characters' "flaws"/quirks in a way that they aren't a true detriment to the party, and, more specifically, to the other players' fun

    I really need to learn more from Travis about the "My character wouldn't do this". There's a lot of times I make characters specifically to accept whatever to not be issues within the group, but I would love to have characters put into situations where they want to say no but I as a player am ok with it.
    Could that be a future video, though? Both how to focus on it as a player, but also from the other perspectives: How as a DM or a player around the table do we go around the situation where someone shuts down and becomes a brick wall without stomping on someone's toes?

    While I'm positively surprised how good of a player Travis is and how great Grog is. As a fan of the goliath lore from 3.5e, I can't help but feel disappointed in the way they're presented in Critical Role. They're like discount orcs, even the term "herd" comes of as a replacement for the word "horde". Strikes me as a missed opportunity to show a physically strong race that isn't a bunch of bastards.

    • @verdantmistral442
      @verdantmistral442 7 місяців тому +3

      I think that is partially explained as Kevdak being the reason for the herd being bastards and that post-Kevdak there is the possibility for them to become better.
      Though that was likely also depending on Grog's choice to lead them versus letting them go on their own. It now kind of depends of Grog's cousin.

    • @Opacus02
      @Opacus02 7 місяців тому +3

      It should be noted that not all goliaths in the campaign are warlike, it was only Kevdak's influence in this case. The Rivermaw Herd was a peaceful tribe until they were conquered by the Herd of Storms and after Kevdak's death returned to being peaceful. One of it's members even becomes the Master of Development on the Council of Tal'Dorei, Edelbern Cleareyes.

  • @andrewshandle
    @andrewshandle 7 місяців тому +103

    I know this wasn't the theme of this video, but the negatives of "only identify can ID magic items" thing actually causes some problems in C2.
    Liam, completely in character as Caleb, at one point becomes the arbiter of "who gets what items" because he's the only one who knows Identify and this visually pisses off half the cast in one episode. In the Talks Machina that week he even mentions how bad it was so clearly there were some conversations had off line about it. He stopped doing it after that.
    If a group of people who are normally pretty selfless due to their background as actors and improvisers can get sucked into the power struggle of ID-ing objects, any group can. I think that's why they make it so easy to ID objects now, the potential for abuse is just way too high.

    • @Not_Harvard
      @Not_Harvard 7 місяців тому +5

      Do you remember which episode that happened? I think they removed all of the talks machina so I'm kinda interested to see the moment you're referring to.

    • @verdantmistral442
      @verdantmistral442 7 місяців тому +24

      I think part of the issue there is also Liam's unwillingness to break character during sessions.
      If he had broken character long enough to say I'm only withholding information until everything's identified because that's just how Caleb does identification (by being methodical and focused until the task is done). Then the others would have probably chilled out. The problem was Caleb was coming across as shifty and secretive instead of focused and methodical.
      Doesn't help that Caleb was sort of introduced as a conman of sorts so there was more than enough reason to believe Caleb was untrustworthy.
      It's one of those things where I think the lesson will be sometimes being too incharacter can cause problems and taking the moment to just explain to the other players what your doing can potentially relieve the negative tension and allow them to relax.
      It is one of Liam's flaws that he sometimes takes incharacter things a bit too far. But that kind of combines with Liam's other flaw of being slow on the uptake sometimes. Because I guess he could have taken a moment to explain as Caleb his process had he caught on to the other players' discomfort quicker.
      Not saying this is necessarily a bad thing or wrong. Just an opportunity to see that roleplaying can go too far and you need to make sure that the other players understand your intentions. You might reason that you want their reactions to be natural, but remember having fun is more important than acting incharacter. Also if the other players understand your intention they can still give you the reactions of their characters without becoming anxious themselves. It's role-playing not method acting.

      @@Not_Harvard so it started in episode 8, ID-ing just a few items takes 20 minutes as Liam just drags everything out. He refuses to tell anyone what the Wand of Smiles does, he just pockets it saying it's too dangerous. He lies about what the shackles do (but Matt told the whole group they weren't magic already), then he pockets the glove of fire thing saying it's too dangerous as well until Beau calls him out. He gave Nott and Jester the wand at the same time which distracts for a bit but Marsha had to remind him about the glove he pocketed.
      Very soon after this (so maybe not right after this episode, but in the next 5 or so) he says on TM that he won't be such a jerk with items. But it is noticeable that by the time the episodes are in the 20s while Caleb still tries to "assign" items, Liam tells everyone what they do.
      It's 5 years ago so I didn't remember it exactly right but Marisha, Travis and Laura aren't exactly thrilled with Liam.

      @@verdantmistral442 for sure, it clearly wasn't done with ill intent, but Liam just pulling an innocent version of "it's what my character would do" not realizing it's not good for the table.
      Liam seems to get in his own way sometimes, like the time later in C2 when he asked everyone to leave the table when some backstory stuff came out when that's not how they ever handled that scenario with other characters. On its own, that's not bad either, just annoying and at another table it might actually be a problem. "Why can you hear our backstory but we can't hear yours?"
      At the wrong table one person controlling all information about items is asking for trouble.

      I agree it was an issue, but I also thought of casting Identify on all the items before dealing with any of them as a bit of a nod to Caleb’s Keen Mind. Most people would want to give the information for each item immediately to avoid mixing up which item had what abilities, but since Caleb didn’t have to worry about that he could gather all the information and then move on to presenting it all. That was probably mostly me overthinking it, but it seemed like an interesting explanation when it occurred to me, so I thought I’d share it

    Outro Mike: Into the Frostweald will a lot of *cool* little lessons.
    Me: Ha, I see what you did there.
    In all seriousness, Travis is a living masterclass in how to rp characters without stepping on the toes of others. Managing to portray character thoughts and feelings while also being flexible with his conversations and open to ideas and suggestions. It can be difficult to do that with a stubborn/prideful character. Real props to the guy.
