Technically jesus never said that. But he certainly never said slavery is wrong either.
There was however a speech jesus made to his apostles where he casually talks about how a slave who knowingly did wrong by his master gets heavily beaten by his master (but a slave who unknowingly did wrong only gets beaten lightly😑) as if it's just totally fucking normal 💁‍♂️ So fuck knows where they get this idea that jesus was against or abolished slavery

Charles needs to read Twelve Years A Slave in which the slave, Solomon Northup recounts how evil slave owners read the words of both New and Old Testament from the Bible to prove that god intends for them to be slaves. Charles also needs to read where Jesus said that he does not change one jot or tittle of the law, which includes the Old Testament support for slavery. Charles also needs to consider what Jesus never said. He never said Do not keep slaves. He could have, but he didn't.

Nice pick. But I´d take it further and be more general. Charles needs to read and learn to discern. He needs to think if those fuzzy warm teachings of all his life are supported by what he reads and sees. But Charles might not be willing to do it because the Bible does not make mistakes, Jesus was perfect, and all of those among us who say differently are ignorant and evil demons who want to eat his soul. It´s pretty cool to be the hero of your own imaginary world.

Jesus told his prospective followers that it was harder for a camel to pass through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of heaven and that they should therefore *sell* all of their possessions and give the proceeds to the poor.
This wealth would have included slaves as these were counted as chattels.
He did not, however, tell anyone to *free* slaves so his injunction would have resulted in such slaves remaining in slavery under another master.
      Matthew ch 19 vv21-22:
"Jesus said unto him, If thou wilt be perfect, go and sell that thou hast, and give to the poor, and thou shalt have treasure in heaven: and come and follow me.
But when the young man heard that saying, he went away sorrowful: for he had great possessions."

I wouldn't say that Jesus was pro-slavery. The way I understand he was an anti-property apocaliptic prophet. So keeping people in chains for personal profit is not very alligned with his ideology. Even quotes like: "It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle, than for a rich man to enter into the kingdom of God" is a sign that he was strictly against wealth and signs of it. Slaves were considered property of wealthy and as such he couldn't be endorsing it and not be a hypocrite - which admitting, being a hypocrite would be a very Christian thing but nonetheless... The reasons why he doesn't mention slavery probably just shows his disinterest with worldly matters such as politics and property. He would also get crucified instantly if he said that there shouldn't be slaves in Roman empire - but for all the little we know, he might as well have been crucified for that - crucifiction was most common punishment for rebeling slaves, Romans wouldn't give a damn about him breaking Jewish religious traditions. I am atheist by the way.

    • @blarglemantheskeptic
      @blarglemantheskeptic 2 роки тому +8

@@andyhx2 (according to the Bible), Jesus mentions slaves _repeatedly._ The standout for me is in the Parable of the Unmerciful Slave/Servant (Matthew 18:23-35): He indicates that the punishment that is appropriate for a slave who was an a*hole to OTHER slaves after his owner was nice to him, is to have him TORTURED for an extended period. And the "moral" is: just like the slave DESERVED what he got, if you don't forgive others, then you'll deserve ETERNAL TORTURE.
What was missing was a verse 36 that said: "Oh, and by the way, DON'T OWN PEOPLE!".
If you read it, you'll see that he was ABSOLUTELY comfortable with slavery (and torture for minor crimes). Having read this _common_ parable, any Christian trying to argue that the Jesus character was anti-slavery is simply lying.

    • @andyhx2
      @andyhx2 2 роки тому +1

@@blarglemantheskeptic It's in the name. It's a parable. The point of the story isn't how you should treat slaves if you want to get into heaven. It is how God will treat you if you do not behave. “This is how my heavenly Father will treat each of you unless you forgive your brother or sister from your heart.” God's authority over man explained in a simile of human made authority relationships. Charles is the worst case of brainwashing that I’ve ever listened to. It’s very sad to hear him trying to justify slavery let alone the treatment of women.
By the way, the punishment for rapists is that they had to marry their victim. I can just imagine Charles justifying that by saying it was the kindest thing to do because the women and girl victims would have been shunned because they were no longer virgins and therefore not worthy for marriage. Who made a society like that where women had no voice and no choice?
His cognitive dissonance is amazing. He doesn’t care about the truth, he’s in love with the fantasy of Jesus. In his mind Jesus can’t be wrong so it must mean we have got it wrong, or we’re interpreting it wrongly. Read your bible, Charles, it’s man made.

      Allah allows for slavery?.
Quran [5:89] GOD does not hold you responsible for the mere utterance of oaths; He holds you responsible for your actual intentions. If you violate an oath, you shall atone by feeding ten poor people from the same food you offer to your own family, or clothing them, or by FREEING A SLAVE. If you cannot afford this, then you shall fast three days. This is the atonement for violating the oaths that you swore to keep. You shall fulfill your oaths. GOD thus explains His revelations to you, that you may be appreciative.
Quran [58:3] Those who estrange their wives in this manner, then reconcile thereafter, shall atone by FREEING A SLAVE before resuming their sexual relations. This is to enlighten you. GOD is Cognizant of everything you do.
More instructions for muhammed and muslims to free slaves
Quran [58:4] If you cannot find A SLAVE TO FREE, you shall fast two consecutive months before resuming sexual relations. If you cannot fast, then you shall feed sixty poor people. You shall believe in GOD and His messenger. These are GOD's laws. The disbelievers have incurred a painful retribution.
Quran [7:157] "....follow the messenger, the gentile prophet(Muhammad), whom they find written in their Torah and Gospel.* He exhorts them to be righteous, enjoins them from evil, allows for them all good food, and prohibits that which is bad, and UNLOADS THE BURDENS AND SHACKLES UPON THEM. Those who believe in him, respect him, support him, and follow the light that came with him are the successful ones."
If as you say that Allah allows slavery, then why is he telling the muslims to free them whenever they can in the Quran?.

The christian tenants are perfect for humanity. Really?
Daughters can be bought and sold: If a man sells his daughter as a servant, she is not to go free as male servants do. Exodus 21:7
A raped daughter can be sold to her rapist: 28 If a man happens to meet a virgin who is not pledged to be married and rapes her and they are discovered, 29 he shall pay her father fifty shekels of silver. He must marry the young woman, for he has violated her. He can never divorce her as long as he lives. Deuteronomy 22:28-29
Collecting wives and sex slaves is a sign of status: He [Solomon] had seven hundred wives of royal birth and three hundred concubines, and his wives led him astray. 1 Kings 11:3
Used brides deserve death: If, however the charge is true and no proof of the girl’s virginity can be found, she shall be brought to the door of her father’s house and there the men of her town shall stone her to death. Deuteronomy 22:20-21.
Women, but only virgins, are to be taken as spoils of war: Now kill all the boys. And kill every woman who has slept with a man, 18 but save for yourselves every girl who has never slept with a man. Numbers 31:17-18
Menstruating women are spiritually unclean: 19 “‘When a woman has her regular flow of blood, the impurity of her monthly period will last seven days, and anyone who touches her will be unclean till evening. 20 “‘Anything she lies on during her period will be unclean, and anything she sits on will be unclean. 21 Anyone who touches her bed will be unclean; they must wash their clothes and bathe with water, and they will be unclean till evening. 22 Anyone who touches anything she sits on will be unclean; they must wash their clothes and bathe with water, . . . 30 The priest is to sacrifice one for a sin offering and the other for a burnt offering. In this way he will make atonement for her before the LORD for the uncleanness of her discharge. 31 “‘You must keep the Israelites separate from things that make them unclean, so they will not die in their uncleanness for defiling my dwelling place,[a] which is among them.’” Leviticus 15: 19-31
A woman is twice as unclean after giving birth to girl as to a boy: A woman who becomes pregnant and gives birth to a son will be ceremonially unclean for seven days, just as she is unclean during her monthly period. ‘ 3 On the eighth day the boy is to be circumcised. 4 Then the woman must wait thirty-three days to be purified from her bleeding. She must not touch anything sacred or go to the sanctuary until the days of her purification are over. 5 If she gives birth to a daughter, for two weeks the woman will be unclean, as during her period. Then she must wait sixty-six days to be purified from her bleeding. 6 ” ‘When the days of her purification for a son or daughter are over, she is to bring to the priest at the entrance to the tent of meeting a year-old lamb for a burnt offering and a young pigeon or a dove for a sin offering. Leviticus 12: 1-8
A woman’s promise is binding only if her father or husband agrees: 2 When a man makes a vow to the LORD or takes an oath to obligate himself by a pledge, he must not break his word but must do everything he said. 3 “When a young woman still living in her father’s household makes a vow to the LORD or obligates herself by a pledge 4 and her father hears about her vow or pledge but says nothing to her, then all her vows and every pledge by which she obligated herself will stand. 5 But if her father forbids her when he hears about it, none of her vows or the pledges by which she obligated herself will stand; the LORD will release her because her father has forbidden her. . . . . A woman’s vow is meaningless unless approved by her husband or father. But if her husband nullifies them when he hears about them, then none of the vows or pledges that came from her lips will stand. Her husband has nullified them, and the LORD will release her. 13 Her husband may confirm or nullify any vow she makes or any sworn pledge to deny herself. Numbers 30:1-16
Women should be seen not heard: Women should remain silent in the churches. They are not allowed to speak, but must be in submission, as the law says. 1 Corinthians 14:34
Wives should submit to their husband’s instructions and desires: Wives, submit yourselves to your husbands, as is fitting in the Lord. Colossians 3:18
In case you missed that submission thing . . . : Wives, submit yourselves to your own husbands as you do to the Lord. 23 For the husband is the head of the wife as Christ is the head of the church, his body, of which he is the Savior. 24 Now as the church submits to Christ, so also wives should submit to their husbands in everything. Ephesians 5:22-24.
More submission - and childbearing as a form of atonement: A woman should learn in quietness and full submission. 12 I do not permit a woman to teach or to assume authority over a man; she must be quiet. 13 For Adam was formed first, then Eve. 14 And Adam was not the one deceived; it was the woman who was deceived and became a sinner. 15 But women will be saved through childbearing-if they continue in faith, love and holiness with propriety. 1 Timothy 2: 11-15
Women were created for men: For if a woman does not cover her head, she might as well have her hair cut off; but if it is a disgrace for a woman to have her hair cut off or her head shaved, then she should cover her head. 7 A man ought not to cover his head, since he is the image and glory of God; but woman is the glory of man. 8 For man did not come from woman, but woman from man; 9 neither was man created for woman, but woman for man. 1 Corinthians 11:2-10
Sleeping with women is dirty: No one could learn the song except the 144,000 who had been redeemed from the earth. 4 These are those who did not defile themselves with women, for they remained virgins. They follow the Lamb wherever he goes. They were purchased from among mankind and offered as first-fruits to God and the Lamb. Revelation 14:3-4

@@jasons8479Correct. The one time jesus mentioned slavery is when he casually talked about how one slave would get beaten badly by his master but another slave only lightly beaten, as if it was just totally fucking normal.

I’m an old dude who recently found out that I am on the autism spectrum. I’ve also been an atheist since before I can remember. The last church I attended was a Southern Baptist when I was 10 or 11. I wonder if they are connected. When I first learned about my autism diagnosis I was upset, but now I embrace it and I also embrace my atheism. 😎✌🏼

Jesus, the most perfect, moral man in the universe was afraid to speak up about slavery?

I have been an atheist for 60 years, and I still know the buybull better than most self-proclaimed christians. I know that lots of buybulls are sold every year, but apparently few are ever read.

17:40 Maybe it's just me but it sounded extremely condescending to recommend reading the New Testament.

Jesus could have mentioned bacteria while he was at it. Or algebra. Or electricity.

Loved the video, but quick correction. In the beginning of the video, the hosts say that Catholics didn't import slaves. However, we can't forget the other parts of the Americas where the French, Spanish, and Portuguese imported slaves to Latin America and certain parts of the Caribbean. The amount of enslaved Africans brought to Brazilian probably rivals (or maybe even outpaces) the amount of enslaved Africans brought to North America.

The post-hoc rationalisation of horrific bible verses by present day Christians is literally incredible.

You know, these people wonder why their children are leaving organized religion. I hope they keep on wondering until the last church closes.

Poor caller is trying so hard to rationalize what he believes. It’s sad.

An all powerful God does not have the power to not just end slavery, but to never allow it to occur. As far as man's hardened hearts excuse, why could God harden Pharos' heart in Exodus to keep him from releasing the Israelites, but not soften his heart to make release them? It seems the all powerful is not do powerful.

the funniest part is that what Jesus actually said was a lot closer to Buddhism than anything any Christian church spews about exclusion, hate and violence..
