Diane Phipps funny I just saw a post on our community forum that locals are having a major problem with fruit flies and drain flies. Interesting since they don’t even have indoor compost. Made me feel a little better.
Emily, I really appreciate and enjoy your videos. I had a worm bin about 16 years ago. At that time, the info available to me was in a very few books and internet articles. If videos existed, I was not aware of them. I've learned now that my bin was way too wet. The worms survived, for the most part, but they were always trying to escape. It is so helpful to see how you manage your bins. Thanks!
I've noticed the last 3 times my bins got acidic- Which happens to be the last 3 summers because of the increase of tomatoes and such from my garden- that there's a HUGE increase in cocoons.
Hi Emily I used some expired baby formula milk when I made up a worm treat mix from the store cupboard which included some porridge oats bran cereal flakes cornmeal and eggshell. The ENC worms loved it. I only run ENC bins here in the UK. Kind regards Tony
Yesterday I put a piece of burnt toast in my bin. It was a quality bread, Daves Kick Ass multi grain. I didn't cover the bread just put on top. I less than 24 hrs the whole piece of bread is gone .So worms and soldier flies larve like burnt toast also.
Aloha! Thank you! I use Bokashi buckets to produce/process/store my worm food. This basically pickles everything and removes the moisture. There is very little smell, i am using lacto bacillus microbes to break it all down and control the smells, so i have found i have to add water periodically (only have one worm bin), but Bokashi buckets are a great way to keep excess foods as well (if you are running out of freezer space :)).
I felt sure the worms would love the baby formula but thought you might get that horrible sour milk smell. Glad it all worked out well. Nice update Emily.
Have fed caked/bricked up old kitten formula, and powdered milk, just in 'brick' form it probably needs to be in a relatively large active bin with enough moisture to make it workable. No sour smells, no extra bugs, no issues. Any grease spicy stuff I usually wrapped in packing paper, so I like seeing how you put the jalapenos just right in no problem! *going to find something about coleslaw, to see if you did that directly...*
If already covered I do apologize. Just stopn by for a sec. What about green/ ripe maters, are they a no no? Mine don't seem to be eating green ones. Thanx in advance for all your work.
Thank you for your fun and educational videos. As a novice worm-owner I learn a lot from this What I wonder what's in your dry mix Could you write that down once I use finely ground eggshells with a little bit of sand. Thanks in advance for answering my question
If the compost is dry is it possible that the worms will crowd the jalapeños only because they will moisten their skins? My worms all crowd under a piece of melon rind. Is there a danger that drying out the compost will damage the microbes in it?
Good video, interesting for me as I didn't know tomatoes were a forbidden food. My green grocer gave me a bag of scraps, the was a fair few tomatoes in it so my worm babies had a big feed😀
Emily ...I need some advice. I been raising red wigglers for composting and fishing for about 7 months. The red wigglers are good for composting. Not really big enough for fishing. Been looking at the Euro nightcrawlers. Your thoughts on this please and where would be a good place to purchase them. Hope your feeling better. I enjoy your videos. Thanks
I get some of your experiments. Interesting. What I don't get is WHY you would choose to introduce something as Commercially Processed, as baby formula to something to be used for purposes not containing processed ingredients, unless this Will Not be sold to organic or other natural garden producers. But then I still don't understand what you get out of the formula experiment. What is the outcome you seek here? Will you clue me in? I am truly interested...
I do not sell my castings. Give some away locally but I compost purely for my own use. I try to show that just about anything CAN be composted. Plenty of my produce I compost isn't organic. It is hard to find purely organic. The worms are fantastic at helping reduce pathogens of all sorts. We don't have to be perfect but reducing waste is important to me and my non-organic castings go on ornamentals. My organic goes to my veggie garden.
Fantastic update. I think it is intresting that they like they formula more than the peppers. I wonder if they will get there size back with that formula? 😉
MANY babies Are Terribly ALLERGIC to BABY FORMULA. Is there nothing that isn't CHEMICALLY PROCESSED or RECALLED often that you could use? Even leading brand baby foods have beem recalled recently because of ingredients that may have come from plants grown with too much chemical contact from toxic minerals to sprays & ferts? What about Avocados, Yams, Winter Squash, etc, Thing with veg fats & lots of bulk per bite?
May I take a liberty here? Composting worms have been known to mitigate E-coli and Salmonella. The baby food was an experiment with expired (waste) baby formula. Looks to me like they are keeping some landfill space from filling up with spoiled goods, and turning it into something safe and organic- worm castings. ; - } Cast that could be used to grow some natural and organic people food..
Lilia Kogan I think so too. It feels good not to require wasting the tomatoes that got funky. I made 20 quarts of tomato sauce. We will be eating pasta for quite some time.
Don't see the point of this video. Its just seems experimental and waste of perfectly good tomatoes. If you are a novice or a part timer just stick to the basics avoid the forbidden foods and keep it simple. This video is just purely for entertainment not education.
Your worms are looking great Emily. Glad to hear your pest problems are sorting themselves out, that must be a relief.

@@TheCrazyWormLady Well then, considering you're feeding your worms partially broken down food that can attract flies, you're doing really well!
Diane Phipps that’s how I feel. Or at least that’s what I am telling myself.

BSFL are pretty voracious!!
Keep crushing all those myths! you know more than the "experts"

I really need to do more research on Bokashi. I hear wonderful things! Thanks for watching and commenting!

Nice update Emily.
Thanks for watching as always! It worked out splendidly.
Can't wait to see them consume the tomatoes. 🐛🌱
They LOVE them from my experience. It should be fun to watch.

Peter van Waterschoot my dry mix is listed in the description of every video. Mix of oyster shell, diatomaceous earth, Neem cake and kelp meal.
Nice great video liked and added to my playlist

Euros 100% are fantastic fishing worms. they get perfect size and have a meaty texture which is excellent for holding onto the hook.
@@TheCrazyWormLady where do you recommend purchasing them from and how fast do they multiply. Thanks

Worm on the run🎶🎶
LOL!
hi. great information. do you use neem cake powder in your dry worm food? isnt it supposed to harm insects ?

Melinda Schneider interesting thought. Formula helps babies put on weight...
@@TheCrazyWormLady yes and there is a lot of protien and calcium in formula too. Might get them back to fighting form. Lol 😉
I'm confused. I thought worms were for all natural and organic purposes.

Thanks for watching Wayne!
Hey Emily, I hope you're doing ok. I miss your videos 💐🌺🌷⚘
My red wigglers like tomatoes they just never eat the skins.
If you leave them in there long enough... they will eat the skin too. It does take ages though.
They will love the tomatoes.
Lilia Kogan I think so too. It feels good not to require wasting the tomatoes that got funky. I made 20 quarts of tomato sauce. We will be eating pasta for quite some time.
@@TheCrazyWormLady Can they eat unripened tomatoes? I have a bunch from my garden that got blossom end rot.
I've learned that cooked tomatoes are actually more acidic than raw tomatoes. :D
Good video Thanks for sharing
Thanks for watching.
Do u garden or just raise worms?
Both. Mostly worms, I am learning and dabbling in gardening.
@@TheCrazyWormLady interesting...and then u sell them? And castings?
I use or give away most of my castings. I don't really sell them except for to local gardeners. I sell worms though.
They like the formula.
Amber’s Amusements little babies!
Don't cover the tomatoes when there cooking and that's any tomato products. Also if can't handle the acidityness add ranch dressing, it really helps.
The tomatoes lock to me perfectly to eat by People
