  • Having sorted the mechanical and ignition timing, my mission is now to find and eliminate any leaks in the fuel-air system and hopefully that will remove the flat spot on my classic Mini 998 cc Automatic engine in my Outspan Orange car. Once that's sorted we can drive the Outspan up to Buckingham Palace to be part of The Queen's Platinum Jubilee Pageant.
Edd China's Workshop Diaries Episode 53 - Sorting out a flat spot on my Mini engined Orange car by fixing leaks in the carburettor and manifold(s).

I remember first time I ever saw you on TV, must have been 11 years ago now, you were covering exactly the same issue I was fixing on my car (replacing drum brakes).
I've "learned to learn" on my own since then, but that has never stopped me from tuning in whenever I get the chance ^^
So happy you're on UA-cam now, I can fiddle and fettle about, and then watch your videos whenever I have the time, instead of having to make the time 😊

Even though I don’t do carb engines any longer (not to say I won’t in the future) it’s always good to get a bit of a refresher on the fine tuning of a carb. Because honestly, weather it’s a SU -Webber- Holley or Quadrajet the basic principles are all the same because they all do the same things but they do it in there own ways, all the main adjustments are exactly the same so thank Edd & Paul!

Looking at those manifolds I was sitting hoping you got the Aquablast out again as they would look so good all cleaned up and .....Yes!
The art of tuning an SU carb.
Memories of balancing and setting up twin SUs on a Spitfire, massively helped by the easy access and even a comfy seat perching on the front tyre.

I would've checked the manifold for warps with a steel ruler for instance, as well as the face of the head where the manifold is fitted. This would eliminate any face discrepancies and future air leak problems.

Nice vid and so glad to see wheel nuts being torqued by hand - it's one of my pet hates when garages and tyre centres use the gun to tighten them as it's a real pain getting them back off again for most people, especially if you're stuck at the side of the road in the rain!

    • @anthonycarty9433

I had to take a couple of wheels off my car recently , had some tyres fitted some months previously and had to use a two foot length of scaffold pole on the end of the wheel brace to get the wheel nuts off . Thought they were friction welded on . No finesse .

@John Thomas Had that as well, the garage got really stroppy with me about doing an oil change with materials I supplied until I showed them an invoice from the previous year that it was them that had overtightened the sump plug stopping me from getting it back off.

    • @kopmatt07
      @kopmatt07 2 роки тому +1

@John Thomas High street garage did that with my sump plug and oil filter. Had to use a 30" breaker bar just to get the plastic oil filter cap off. Absolutely ridiculous. No idea how they hadn't cracked the plastic over-tightening it so much.

Ed - GET RID OF THAT GLASS FUEL FILTER!! If they dont crack , the engine heat will cause the sealant bonding the glass and metal parts ways and then pumps fuel out onto your hot exhaust manifold for about a minute before the engine quits which ignites and often burns down the car! Get the normal plastic ones, yes worse for the environment because they are single use, but you will have piece of mind! If you really must have a cleanable one - get the ones with the non see thru metal housings!

I always found it a bit suspicious when I would see those K&N filter "demonstration" displays set up with an old and tattered paper filter and a new fabric one. They would have a fan blow a ping pong ball up a tube to show the difference in airflow. One day, I happened to come across a display that had been recently set up, but they forgot to use an old and tattered paper filter, instead having a new one in it's place. The paper one flowed exactly the same or better than the K&N. It made it clear to me that the better and cheaper option is to change your paper filter when it needs to be changed, rather than throwing an overpriced aftermarket one on.

    • @enoz.j3506

Works a treat - that's how I discovered the cause of my Mk1 Focus's 2500rpm idle speed, which turned out to be collapsed and split PCV hoses behind the inlet manifold, which were barely visible. I don't even think I hit the right spot with the spray, but just the vapours made the engine speed increase and gave me a location to home in on.

Once you start cleaning and making things shiny is that it shows everything else to be dirty and grotty so you can be sucked into a whirl pool of insanity! Keep up the good work!

when God save the Queen started playing, I put my hand over my heart. The day after 9-11, at the changing of the guard at the palace, they played the Star Spangled Banner, I will never forget that as long as I live.

Eddie, the suction off the inlet manifold helps assist the springs on all you lip seals on your engine. Removing that pipe from the carb to breather can cause slow drips on you engine a dggearbox so keep an eye out for new drips.
Normally to test the integraty of the breakers system you would get the car up to temperature a d on its slow idle, then remove the oil filler cap and the revs should stumble or drop as the mixture weakens as it draws air in through the breather. Replace the filler cap and the idle should return to normal indicating the breather is either blocked or leaking.
