  • Harvey Brownstone conducts an in-depth interview with Legendary Actress Eleanor Parker's Son, Paul Clemens
    About Harvey’s Guest:
Today Harvey welcomes the son of Eleanor Parker, three-time Academy Award nominated actress who starred in some of the most memorable movies of all time, including “Caged”, “Detective Story”, “Interrupted Melody”, “Scaramouche”, “Above and Beyond”, “The Man with the Golden Arm”, and everyone’s favourite, “The Sound of Music”. She was also nominated for a Golden Globe, an Emmy, 3 Laurel Awards, and she won Best Actress at the Venice Film Festival in 1950. Of course I’m talking about the radiant and brilliantly gifted Eleanor Parker. I’m delighted to welcome her dear son Paul Clemens to our show. And if he looks familiar, that’s because he’s also a very talented award-winning actor, who you’ve seen in movies such as “The Passage”, “The Beast Within”, “Communion”, and “The Sound of Spying”. He’s also guest starred on many TV shows including “Quincy”, “Murder, She Wrote”, “The Ray Bradbury Theatre”, and many others.

I was deeply honored that Paul Day Clemens trusted me to provide a platform for him to pay tribute to his gloriously talented Mom, the fabulous Eleanor Parker. I’m loving the fact that our show seems to be the place where the children of legendary stars want to tell their stories. It’s a great privilege, and one that I take very seriously.

Luis Buñuel did Belle de Jour not Louis Malle. Anyway, good interview. I did search for any interviews with Parker herself but only found this instead which I'm totally happy with because usually you get more insight when interviewing the offspring of celebrities about the person they were off the camera than you would from the celebrity themself & there were some cool stories here. Parker was one of the great underrated actresses, so good in so many roles.

MS Parker was a Great Actress.
I recently saw An American Dream.
    She was Exceptional.
Eleanor should have won an Oscar years ago. So many Amazing performances. RIP
Harvey keep these Extraordinary interviews coming.

Excellent, in-depth interview. Eleanor was class personified, as is her son.

What an amazing actress. Impossibly beautiful yet never relied on her looks. Very underrated. I think one of the reasons she didn’t become as big of a star as she could have been was because she didn’t give any fodder to the media/press. Fiercely private individuals are quite “boring” for that kind of business.

I became a huge fan of Eleanor Parker through watching her movies in TCM and I was amazed by how wide her range is and how her acting wasn't dated at all. She got to play challenging, emotionally heavy parts which she accomplished with great care: CAGED, DETECTIVE STORY, THE MAN WITH THE GOLDEN ARM, HOME FROM THE HILL, THE OSCAR (not a great movie but she was superb). It shocks me that she isn't regarded as one of the greats because her work is very respectful and she got nominated three times. I dare say she should have won for CAGED.

I so agree with the Meryl Streep comparison. Eleanor Parker would transform into her roles in a way very few in her era could. You see her in CAGED or AN AMERICAN DREAM, totally different characters.

Absolutely excellent interview I enjoyed it so much. I can hear Paul Clemens talk about Eleanor Parker for hours. She is one of my favorite actresses. When I started to watch her movies, I was absolutely astonished. I was not always quite sure if it is the same actress. She was fantastic. For me, she is in the category of Bette Davis and Barbara Stanwyck.

l have always felt aggrieved that Eleanor was not Oscar-nominated for her work in The Sound of Music. Not only should she have had a nomination, she should have won the award! Her brilliant performance as Baroness Schraeder contributed hugely to the success of the film - l cannot imagine anyone better in the role - and had her work been recognised by the Academy in this, her most well remembered film, she would certainly have a higher profile today.

Besides Robert Taylor her best co-stars were Charlton Heston (Naked Jungle) Glen Ford (Interupted Melody) William Holden. (Escape From Fort Bravo). Robert Mitchum (Home From The Hill). Her best kissing scenes were with Heston and Holden. Lucky Guys.

She was also superb in the '59 Sinatra movie A HOLE IN THE HEAD. She had great chemistry with the entire cast especially the little boy.

Great interview, this is Eleanor Parker's son from her third marriage, his father was the equally famous painter Paul Clemens, they married in 1954, divorced in 1965.

I am a great fan of Eleanor Parker. I own her film "Caged" in which she was nominated for an academy award. I attend dance class with an actress who in the 1970's played her daughter in a film. This actress has stated that Eleanor Powell was not at all nice to work with. And when I raved about how much I loved Eleanor Parker films, this actress proceeded to ice me out of the conversation.

Dearest Harvey, Just watched this again after watching Elenor Parker recently in The Woman In White. This is such a wonderful interview. Her son is truly gracious, interesting, beautifully spoken and the love between he and his Mother is obvious. I also had to tell you that when I watch your interviews (other than the fact that you are so great at what you do), I love that fact that seeing you makes my heart happy. Like visiting a wonderful friend. Be well there and know you make a difference in peoples lives
