  • Harley Davidson's have changed a lot over the years. They told me my first Harley Davidson Fat Boy was not a "real" Harley Davidson. Now I ride an M8 Street Glide Special, is that acceptable? What about the direction Harley Davidson is taking with the new CVO models - will the Harley "essence" remain - or are they destroying the brand?
Includes great music, sensational Harley Davidsons and hard riding -- also discounts on motorcycle gear and a great competition to enter.

There's no way that you'd see me riding up at Sturgis or Daytona Bike Week and expecting to be taken seriously.
If I were at Daytona Bike Week and saw someone ride up on a Harley Livewire, I damn sure wouldn't have taken them seriously.

Change for change sake.. not always a great idea. Change for improvement of quality and value is always welcome. I actually like the look of the new Fatboy without taking anything away from the older models. That term " go with the flow" I don't particularly agree with. Only dead fish go with the flow 😊

I have been a mechanic for decades now and I have found that Harley has a problem when they release new products. With the early evos there was a gear matching issue in the gear box, with the twin cam it was the oil pressure relief valve in the oil pump, with the M8 it was a sumping issue. Now with the VVT in the new CVO I am waiting to see what happens. I was working on VVT motors in the early 90's so there is no reason for Harley to screw the pooch but they do have a habit of fucking the simplest of tasks. Wouldn't touch on of those motors for about 4 years.

The old ones are old.....and classics. Us HD riders still get shit for riding 1960s technology even on a new one. HD had to keep up with the times as well as satisfy the old timers. I think they have done a good job. My last one was an 85 Evo 4 spd kicker that I loved and had for decades and I bought a new Softail Std and love it. I would love to have an old classic as well as the new fresh and dependable standard. Right now I have a 14 Sporty 72 and a 20 Std and love them both and ride both enough to keep them in the stable. I'm guilty of liking the ride just a tad more than tinkering with my bikes. May take on an old shovel project once I retire and have more time. I'm good for now though-Great post again mate.

Actually I have had and still own many other FL & FXDWG evo's & what I love about Evo's is that I can afford to have several of them instead of just one modern very Expensive one, which at the end of the day wouldn't put any bigger of a smile on my face then what I have already. This way my Sons and friends who don't have bikes can come riding with me. The Evo's run for ever, make great father/son projects & are easy enough to repair. But each to thier own also 👍

I think the difference is, Harley changing is because the world, everything, is changing. Harleys, like life...out parents lives, grandparents etc...were all just an evolution, a continuity. A pan, a shovel, an evo, all were an evolution of a family.
But now the tech revolution is changing everything in haywire, unpredictable ways.
Now, a harley is likely liquid cooled. You have the sportster, whatever that plastic looking thing is. The idle sounds like a Suzuki cruiser. The potato is dead, never coming back. Harley has a fetish with black now.
Anyway I could go on, but hopefully my point is understood. This time, change is not the same. It's a new direction, not an advancement of what it used to mean to be a harley over 100 years.

I love the look of the new Fat Boys, they just don't corner worth a shit. Downright dangerous as the tire wears. The old ones didn't have any clearance, so the fact they had normal tires was moot. Be awfully nice for HD to "change" and put standard tires on the new ones.
I think the new Street Glide CVO looks really good besides the bland paint. The brown one looks great, but I ain't payin that much for paint. Road Glide has a face only a mother could love and apes aren't my jam.
The best thing about the CVOs I've found from just a showroom visit was the weight reduction. Getting it off the stand was noticeably less intense. Maybe because the fuel tank was empty, I dunno, but I could get on with the Street Glide version. I even liked the firm seat. I could do w/o the speakers in the saddlebags. They just take up space and beg water to drip in and make stuff wet.
I'm stuck in the past now too. I find the 107 to be a wonderful engine with great fueling that is as maintenance free as bikes get. As I put a ton of miles on bikes every year, that's important to me.

Frankly I was looking for another mid-90s Evo as 50-55hp is about all I need for my riding and I have well over 100K miles on that breed... couldn't find one that suited... I have no idea why somone needs 120+ horspower, inverted forks and whatnot on a Harley (I've got a 150+ real sport tourer, if I need to feel what 100mph in second gear feels like...), but for open road relaxed runnng it is hard to beat Harley, so I am where I am... the four-valve-head Harleys are mechanically interesting, but for what... yeah, I know its part of the package to placate EPA amd EU environmental regs, but...

You mentioned inverted fork tubes. One problem I have with them is that as the seals wear, they have more of a tendency to leak compared to non-inverted forks because, the fork oil lays on the seal. Just my opinion/experience. Valkyries have "inverted" tubes. After changing the seals 3 times, I gave up and just top off the fork oil. It has 113,000miles on it and it's too much work to tear down the front end just to replace the seals. Take the calipers off, take the wheel off, take the fender off, take the turn signals off, then the tubes slide out of the tripple tree. To add oil, just take the cap off the tube add oil and put the cap back on.

It's not weather the new bikes are Harley's or not ,but your not going to fix a ECU,fuel injection, twin cam,etc at home or side of the road and not cheap to repair or maintain that's why people call them not real Harley's, Evo for me thanks, don't get mixed up in the real Harley or not argument and lose sight of the issue

Im 65 and ride a tricky 93 fatty and can do most my own work on it, its my 3 rd after a 76 flh then a 81 shovel but would love to have a nice street glide for some long hauls but wouldn't have a clue how to fix anything on the road !

The new bikes are far more reliable, you won't NEED to fix it by the road.

Ironically the shovel was AMF but Evo isn’t a real Harley 🤔
I got two 2002 TC’s and a 93 Fatboy , all three carb’d. While the Evo captures the cool factor, the TC’s are much nicer to ride. A lot of my buddies ride M8’s and they feel like a Honda , very smooth but I’m not ready to move on to Fuel injection. Just not my cup of tea ☕️ doesn’t mean they aren’t nice.

New to HD and can’t wait to get on a 117 Low Rider next year and see what all the fuss is about! It’s the same thing with the Metal underground though which I’ve been into for decades, where new stuff will always be sh&t on by elitists and that’s not necessarily a bad thing. It keeps the bastards honest.

The low rider is a fun bike especially if you release a little of its potential

80mph, no brakes ,leaks oil, mongrel to ride almost like a modern harley but seriously when the modern bonnie came there were the same cretins crying foul.

Yes, but Harley just drags out things before actually making changes for the better (of the customer) and typically change comes when poked by EU EPA Regulators. I would have never bought a Softail (given my riding style and preferences) before the M8. I hated the vibration of the Evo Softails and pre- M8s, I would scrape the bitch even through roundabouts. Bring on the M8 Softails and I actually bought one - much smoother, so much better ground clearance, no tank slapping even at loose your license speeds (only when I was in Mexico), and man, the thing goes, and you don't have to get under the bike with tools to change preload.

When are you gunna try a Honda fury. They ain't changed sence they've come out 13 years ago. Just the paint job and any defects get changed.... in Japan they call them Choppa's not choppers. I'm curious on your response to my first bike. My next bike will be the real one and it's going to be the best Harley-Davidson ever. If you Google most reliable dependable lowest maintenance bike you'll see why I chose it. Next will be a belt drive.

Love my ‘22 Streetglide special and my ‘22 Fatboy. Big improvement over my 06 Softail. Not to discredit the 06. But the new bikes have more power and just ride nicer.
