  • This week’s episode is a bit of a departure from the norm, but I’m happy to stand behind it nonetheless. When friend and past podcast guest, Louis Cahill, reached out and suggested we sit down together with Andrew Grillos, I knew it was going to be a special conversation. So, in this episode of Anchored, the three of us gathered to discuss a topic that’s close to our hearts: men’s mental health in the world of fly fishing.
The conversation is admittedly a bit scattered, but I think that adds to its authenticity. Throughout our discussion, we shared personal stories, insights, and reflections on the unique mental health challenges that men in the fly fishing community often face. From the pressures of maintaining a tough exterior to the stigma surrounding seeking help, we covered a lot of ground.
But amidst the conversation, there’s a clear message that I hope resonates with Anchored listeners: You’re not alone. No matter what you’re going through, there’s always someone out there who’s willing to listen and help. Whether it’s a friend, a family member, or a professional counselor, reaching out for support is a sign of strength, not weakness.
So, as you listen to this episode, I encourage you to reflect on your own mental health journey. And if you find yourself struggling, don’t hesitate to reach out for help. You deserve to live a happy and fulfilling life, both on and off the water.

My daughter, who is and avid angler, and I had the pleasure of being guided by Andrew a couple times a while back. I had heard of his health issues but not known the outcomes. It is so nice to see and hear him on this episode. Andrew is a phenomenal guide and was a pleasure to spend time with. Thanks for this episode and best wishes to Andrew and Louis.

This is a lovely sentiment but not entirely true. I sure found out when my husband passed away that all the offers to help when he died while he was sick disappeared. No one wants anything to do with a 58 year-old widow, brain surgery survivor no matter what she looks or what she likes to do, fly fishing, surfing or otherwise. Old widows are invisible.
We are treated like stray cats. You know ..feed it and it may never go away.
My well-being is due to my efforts alone. No family or friends to lean on. I have no one to call. Every day since John died is a struggle. I'm not bitter. No point in wasting the time I have left on self-pity when I would rather be flailing away with my fly rod and eating shit surfing above my ability.
    Enjoy your spirit otherwise. Mahalo.

Chrystal, this breaks my heart. You’re seen. I wish you lived closer so we could show you just how much. Any chance you’re in WA? United Women on the Fly is awesome and so much fun to be around. Takes a village indeed…
      58, girl, you’re just getting started. 💕

@@AprilVokey I am in Florida and currently battling the pharmacy and my doctor to get the medications that have been prescribed for years. The system knows when there is no one to advocate for you. It's a beat down contest they will probably win..
The reality is not loneliness, it's being alone. No April. There are many of us who are not going to be 'seen" and it's a matter of time before it's just too overwhelming.
Days go by when I haven't spoken with anyone. No one wants to fish or surf or workout with an old woman. If I can't do the things I loved even before I met John, well...

This episode hit me hard. I've dealt with these issues in the past, and I barely made it out of the dark. It was with the help and support of my wife. Thank you for shedding more light on this!
